2 Maccabees 2

1 One finds in the records that Jeremiah the prophet ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been told,	1 Leggesi negli scritti del profeta Geremia, com'egli ordinò a quelli, che erano condotti in altro paese, che prendessero il fuoco nella maniera, che si è detto, e diede avvertimenti a questi, che erano menati altrove.
2 and that the prophet after giving them the law instructed those who were being deported not to forget the commandments of the Lord, nor to be led astray in their thoughts upon seeing the gold and silver statues and their adornment.	2 E diede loro la legge, affinchè non si scordassero de' comandamenti del Signore, e non cadessero in errore alla vista de' simolacri d'oro, e d'argento, e della loro pompa.
3 And with other similar words he exhorted them that the law should not depart from their hearts.	3 E con altre simili ammonizioni gli esortava a non rigettare dal cuor loro la legge.
4 It was also in the writing that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God.	4 E nelle scritture stesse si conteneva come il profeta per avviso datogli da Dio, ordinò, che il tabernacolo, e l'arca andasser seco, fino che arrivò a quel monte, sul quale sali Mosè, e donde vide l'eredità di Dio:
5 And Jeremiah came and found a cave, and he brought there the tent and the ark and the altar of incense, and he sealed up the entrance.	5 E giunto colà Geremia trovò una caverna, e vi ripose dentro il tabernacolo, e l'arca, e l'altare degli incensi, e ne accecò l'ingresso.
6 Some of those who followed him came up to mark the way, but could not find it.	6 E alcuni di quelli, che lo seguivano si avvicinarono per notare il luogo, ma non poteron poi rinvenirlo.
7 When Jeremiah learned of it, he rebuked them and declared: "The place shall be unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows his mercy.	7 E quando Geremia seppe tal cosa gli sgridò, e disse: Il luogo sarà ignoto, fino a tanto che Dio riunisca tutto il popolo, e faccia misericordia.
8 And then the Lord will disclose these things, and the glory of the Lord and the cloud will appear, as they were shown in the case of Moses, and as Solomon asked that the place should be specially consecrated."	8 E allora il Signore manifesterà tali cose, e apparirà la Maestà del Signore, e verrà la nuvola, quale fa veduta da Mosè, e quale apparve allorché Salomone domandò che il tempio fosse consagrato al grande Iddio.
9 It was also made clear that being possessed of wisdom Solomon offered sacrifice for the dedication and completion of the temple.	9 Perocché egli fece grandiosa mostra di sua sapienza, e come sapiente offerse il sagrifizio della dedicazione, e santificazione del tempio.
10 Just as Moses prayed to the Lord, and fire came down from heaven and devoured the sacrifices, so also Solomon prayed, and the fire came down and consumed the whole burnt offerings.	10 Come Mosè fece orazione al Signore, e scese fuoco dal cielo, e consumò l'olocausto; così ancor Salomone fece orazione, e scese fuoco dal cielo, e consumò l'olocausto.
11 And Moses said, "They were consumed because the sin offering had not been eaten."	11 E Mosè disse: Non è stato mangiato quello, che fu offerto per lo peccato, ma è stato consunto dal fuoco.
12 Likewise Solomon also kept the eight days.	12 Salomone parimente celebrò per otto giorni la dedicazione.
13 The same things are reported in the records and in the memoirs of Nehemiah, and also that he founded a library and collected the books about the kings and prophets, and the writings of David, and letters of kings about votive offerings.	13 E queste stesse cose erano registrate negli scritti, e ne' commentarj di Nehemia, dove dicesi come egli formò la biblioteca, e radunò da tutte parti i libri e de' profeti, e di David, e le lettere dei re, e dei loro doni.
14 In the same way Judas also collected all the books that had been lost on account of the war which had come upon us, and they are in our possession.	14 Slmilmente anche Giuda rimesse insieme tutto quello, che si era smarrito nel tempo della guerra, che sostenemmo, e tutto questo si trova presso di noi.
15 So if you have need of them, send people to get them for you.	15 Se voi pertanto desiderate queste cose, mandate persone, che a voi le portino.
16 Since, therefore, we are about to celebrate the purification, we write to you. Will you therefore please keep the days?	16 Essendo adunque noi per celebrare la festa della purificazione, ve ne abbiam dato avviso, e voi ben farete, se fa rete festa per que' giorni.
17 It is God who has saved all his people, and has returned the inheritance to all, and the kingship and priesthood and consecration,	17 E Dio, il quale ha liberato il suo popolo, e ha renduto a tutti la loro eredità, e il regno, e il sacerdozio, e il luogo santo,
18 as he promised through the law. For we have hope in God that he will soon have mercy upon us and will gather us from everywhere under heaven into his holy place, for he has rescued us from great evils and has purified the place.	18 Conforme avea promesso nella legge, abbiamo speranza, che ben presto farà a noi misericordia, e ci riunirà da quanti luoghi sono sotto del cielo, nel luogo santo.
19 The story of Judas Maccabeus and his brothers, and the purification of the great temple, and the dedication of the altar,	19 Perocché da grandi pericolo egli ci ha liberati, ed ha purificato il luogo santo.
20 and further the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes and his son Eupator,	20 Quello poi che riguarda Giuda Maccabeo, e i suoi fratelli, e la purificazione del gran tempio, e la dedicazione dell'altare,
21 and the appearances which came from heaven to those who strove zealously on behalf of Judaism, so that though few in number they seized the whole land and pursued the barbarian hordes,	21 E le guerre avvenute sotto Antioco l'illustre, e sotto il suo figliuolo Eupatore,
22 and recovered the temple famous throughout the world and freed the city and restored the laws that were about to be abolished, while the Lord with great kindness became gracious to them--	22 E i segni veduti in cielo favorevoli a quelli, che valorosamente combatterono per la nazione Giudea, talmente che essendo in piccol numero liberarono il paese, e posero in rotta la moltitudine de' barbari,
23 all this, which has been set forth by Jason of Cyrene in five volumes, we shall attempt to condense into a single book.	23 E ricuperarono il tempio più celebre, che sia al mondo, e la città messero in libertà, e alle leggi abolite rendettero l'osservanza, rendutosi propizio ad essi il Signore, che tutto rimesse in calma,
24 For considering the flood of numbers involved and the difficulty there is for those who wish to enter upon the narratives of history because of the mass of material,	24 Queste cose comprese in cinque libri da Giasone di Cirene, ahbiam noi tentato di restringere in un solo volume.
25 we have aimed to please those who wish to read, to make it easy for those who are inclined to memorize, and to profit all readers.	25 Perocché considerando noi la moltitudine de' libri, e la difficoltà, che nasce dalla moltiplicità delle cose per quelli, che bramano di internarsi nei racconti istorici,
26 For us who have undertaken the toil of abbreviating, it is no light matter but calls for sweat and loss of sleep,	26 Abbiam proccurato, che quelli, che amano di leggere abbiano onde con tentar l'animo loro; gli studiosi poi possano più facilmente imprimer le cose nella memoria, e tutti i lettori se ricevano utilità.
27 just as it is not easy for one who prepares a banquet and seeks the benefit of others. However, to secure the gratitude of many we will gladly endure the uncomfortable toil,	27 Ma quanto a noi, intraprendendo di formare un tal compendio, non leggera fatica abbiamo assunta, ma anzi un lavoro, che molta preparazione richiede, e sudore.
28 leaving the responsibility for exact details to the compiler, while devoting our effort to arriving at the outlines of the condensation.	28 Ma imitando coloro, che preparano un convito, e cercano di incontrare il gusto altrui per ingrazianirsi con molti, di buon animo prendiamo questa fatica.
29 For as the master builder of a new house must be concerned with the whole construction, while the one who undertakes its painting and decoration has to consider only what is suitable for its adornment, such in my judgment is the case with us.	29 La verità di ciascuna cosa noi la rimettiamo agli autori; ma noi del dato disegno formeremo l'abbozzo.
30 It is the duty of the original historian to occupy the ground and to discuss matters from every side and to take trouble with details,	30 Imperocché siccome all'architetto, che fa una nuova casa, si appartiene l'aver cura di tutta la fabbrica, quegli poi, che si studia di darne il disegno deve cercare quello, che atto sia a darne l'idea: nella stessa guisa fa d'uopo giudicare di noi.
31 but the one who recasts the narrative should be allowed to strive for brevity of expression and to forego exhaustive treatment.	31 Imperocché all'autor di una storia sì conviene il raccogliere la materia, e ordinare il racconto, e l'internarsi minutamente in tutte le circostanze;
32 At this point therefore let us begin our narrative, adding only so much to what has already been said; for it is foolish to lengthen the preface while cutting short the history itself.	32 Ma a chi fa un compendio si dee concedere, ch'egli si attenga alla brevità nel suo dire, e schivi le ampliazioni de' racconti.
	33 Qui adunque darem principio al racconto, contenti di questo solo esordio; perocché stolta cosa sarebbe il diffondersi avanti all'istoria, e nella storia stessa restringersi.
