1 When this agreement had been reached, Lysias returned to the king, and the Jews went about their farming.	1 Conclusi questi patti, Lisia se ne tornò dal re, e i Giudei si diedero a coltivare la terra.
2 But some of the governors in various places, Timothy and Apollonius the son of Gennaeus, as well as Hieronymus and Demophon, and in addition to these Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not let them live quietly and in peace.	2 Ma quelli che eran rimasti nella regione, Timoteo, Apollonio, figlio di Genneo, e Girolamo e Demofonte, e oltre a questi Nicànore, governatore di Cipro, non li lasciavano bene avere nè vivere in pace.
3 And some men of Joppa did so ungodly a deed as this: they invited the Jews who lived among them to embark, with their wives and children, on boats which they had provided, as though there were no ill will to the Jews;	3 Or quelli di loppe commisero questo delitto: invitarono i Giudei che abitavano in mezzo a loro a salire colle mogli e coi figli sulle barche da loro preparate, come se non ci fosse nessuna inimicizia tra di loro.
4 and this was done by public vote of the city. And when they accepted, because they wished to live peaceably and suspected nothing, the men of Joppa took them out to sea and drowned them, not less than two hundred.	4 E per decreto fatto in comune dalla città, al quale essi accondiscesero, non avendo a causa della pace alcun sospetto, quando furono in alto mare li sommersero in numero non minore di duecento.
5 When Judas heard of the cruelty visited on his countrymen, he gave orders to his men	5 Giuda appena seppe la crudeltà commessa contro uomini della sua nazione, diede gli ordini alla sua gente, e, invocato Dio, giusto giudice,
6 and, calling upon God the righteous Judge, attacked the murderers of his brethren. He set fire to the harbor by night, and burned the boats, and massacred those who had taken refuge there.	6 marciò contro gli uccisori dei (suoi) fratelli, e di notte diede alle fiamme il porto, bruciò le barche, e trucidò colla spada quelli che erano scampati al fuoco.
7 Then, because the city's gates were closed, he withdrew, intending to come again and root out the whole community of Joppa.	7 Fatto questo partì, ma coll'intenzione di tornare di nuovo e sterminare tutti i cittadini di loppe.
8 But learning that the men in Jamnia meant in the same way to wipe out the Jews who were living among them,	8 Ma avendo saputo che anche quelli di Iamnia volevano trattare nella medesima maniera i Giudei che abitavano tra loro,
9 he attacked the people of Jamnia by night and set fire to the harbor and the fleet, so that the glow of the light was seen in Jerusalem, thirty miles distant.	9 piombò pure di notte sopra quelli di Iamnia, e diede fuoco al porto e alle navi, in modo che le fiamme dell'incendio si vedevano da Gerusalemme, alla distanza di duecentoquaranta stadi.
10 When they had gone more than a mile from there, on their march against Timothy, not less than five thousand Arabs with five hundred horsemen attacked them.	10 Partito di lì, dopo aver fatto nove stadi per andare contro Timoteo, lo attaccarono gli Arabi con cinque mila fanti e cinquecento cavalieri.
11 After a hard fight Judas and his men won the victory, by the help of God. The defeated nomads besought Judas to grant them pledges of friendship, promising to give him cattle and to help his people in all other ways.	11 Dopo aspro combattimento, che coll'aiuto di Dio andò a finir bene, quelli che restavano degli Arabi vinti chiedevano a Giuda che desse loro la destra, promettendo di cedergli dei pascoli e di essergli utili in ogni altra cosa.
12 Judas, thinking that they might really be useful in many ways, agreed to make peace with them; and after receiving his pledges they departed to their tents.	12 Giuda, persuaso che veramente potevano essergli utili in molte cose, promise la pace, e quelli, ricevute le destre, se ne andarono alle loro tende.
13 He also attacked a certain city which was strongly fortified with earthworks and walls, and inhabited by all sorts of Gentiles. Its name was Caspin.	13 Poi (Giuda) attaccò una città forte, circondata di ponti e di mura, abitata da turbe di diverse nazioni e chiamata Casfin.
14 And those who were within, relying on the strength of the walls and on their supply of provisions, behaved most insolently toward Judas and his men, railing at them and even blaspheming and saying unholy things.	14 Or quelli che vi eran dentro, fidando sulla saldezza delle mura e sulle provvisioni di viveri, non si davan pena d'agire, e provccavan Giuda cogli insulti, colle bestemmie e con parole nefande.
15 But Judas and his men, calling upon the great Sovereign of the world, who without battering-rams or engines of war overthrew Jericho in the days of Joshua, rushed furiously upon the walls.	15 Ma Maccabeo, invocato il gran Re del mondo, il quale senza arieti e senza macchine al tempo di Giosuè atterrò Gerico, balzò fieramente sopra le mura;
16 They took the city by the will of God, and slaughtered untold numbers, so that the adjoining lake, a quarter of a mile wide, appeared to be running over with blood.	16 e, presa per volontà del Signore la città, vi fece immensa strage, tale che il vicino lago, largo due stadi, sembrava tinto del sangue degli uccisi.
17 When they had gone ninety-five miles from there, they came to Charax, to the Jews who are called Toubiani.	17 Partiti di là, dopo un viaggio di settecentocinquanta stadi, giunsero a Caraca, presso quei Giudei che sono detti Tubianei.
18 They did not find Timothy in that region, for he had by then departed from the region without accomplishing anything, though in one place he had left a very strong garrison.	18 Ma non poteron prendere in quei luoghi Timoteo, il quale senza aver fatto nulla, tornò indietro, lasciando in dato luogo fortissima guarnigione.
19 Dositheus and Sosipater, who were captains under Maccabeus, marched out and destroyed those whom Timothy had left in the stronghold, more than ten thousand men.	19 Allora Dositeo e Sosipatro, che eran capitani dei soldati insieme con Maccabeo, uccisero dieci mila uomini lasciati da Timoteo in quella fortezza.
20 But Maccabeus arranged his army in divisions, set men in command of the divisions, and hastened after Timothy, who had with him a hundred and twenty thousand infantry and two thousand five hundred cavalry.	20 invece Maccabeo, messi in ordine intorno a sè sei mila uomini, divisi per coorti, si avanzò contro Timoteo, che aveva seco centoventi mila fanti e due mila cinquecento cavalieri.
21 When Timothy learned of the approach of Judas, he sent off the women and the children and also the baggage to a place called Carnaim; for that place was hard to besiege and difficult of access because of the narrowness of all the approaches.	21 Saputo dell'arrivo di Giuda, Timoteo mandò innanzi le donne e i ragazzi e il resto dei bagagli in una fortezza chiamata Carnion, chè era inespugnabile e di difficile accesso per la strettezza dei luoghi.
22 But when Judas' first division appeared, terror and fear came over the enemy at the manifestation to them of him who sees all things; and they rushed off in flight and were swept on, this way and that, so that often they were injured by their own men and pierced by the points of their swords.	22 Ma all'apparire della prima coorte di Giuda, lo spavento s'impadronì dei nemici, per la presenza di Dio che tutto vede, e furon messi in fuga gli uni dagli altri, in modo che erano più che altro rovesciati dalla loro gente, e feriti dalle proprie spade.
23 And Judas pressed the pursuit with the utmost vigor, putting the sinners to the sword, and destroyed as many as thirty thousand men.	23 E Giuda li inseguiva accanitamente, per punir quei profani; e ne prostrò trentamila.
24 Timothy himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater and their men. With great guile he besought them to let him go in safety, because he held the parents of most of them and the brothers of some and no consideration would be shown them.	24 Lo stesso Timoteo, caduto in potere delle schiere guidate da Dositeo e da Sosipatro, con molte preghiere si raccomandava di aver salva la vita, (dicendo) d'avere in suo potere molti parenti e fratelli dei Giudei, che, morto lui, sarebbero senza speranza.
25 And when with many words he had confirmed his solemn promise to restore them unharmed, they let him go, for the sake of saving their brethren.	25 Siccome dette la parola di restituirli secondo i patti convenuti, lo lasciarono andare sano e salvo per la salute dei fratelli.
26 Then Judas marched against Carnaim and the temple of Atargatis, and slaughtered twenty-five thousand people.	26 Intanto Giuda marciava contro Camion, e vi uccideva venticinque mila uomini.
27 After the rout and destruction of these, he marched also against Ephron, a fortified city where Lysias dwelt with multitudes of people of all nationalities. Stalwart young men took their stand before the walls and made a vigorous defense; and great stores of war engines and missiles were there.	27 Dopo avere messi in fuga e sterminati questi, mosse l'esercito contro Efron, città fortificata e abitata da una moltitudine di diverse nazioni; dei giovani robusti, stando a difesa delle mura, facevano grande resistenza; vi erano molte macchine e grandi depositi di frecce.
28 But the Jews called upon the Sovereign who with power shatters the might of his enemies, and they got the city into their hands, and killed as many as twenty-five thousand of those who were within it.	28 Ma (i Giudei), invocato l'Onnipotente, Colui che colla sua potenza schiaccia le forze dei nemici, presero la città, e di quelli che v'eran dentro ne stesero al suolo venticinque mila.
29 Setting out from there, they hastened to Scythopolis, which is seventy-five miles from Jerusalem.	29 Partiti di là marciarono contro la città degli Sciti, distante seicento stadi da Gerusalemme.
30 But when the Jews who dwelt there bore witness to the good will which the people of Scythopolis had shown them and their kind treatment of them in times of misfortune,	30 Ma, siccome i Giudei che abitavano tra quelli di Scitopoli testimoniavano di essere da essi trattati benignamente e che anche nei tempi tristi erano stati trattati con moderazione,
31 they thanked them and exhorted them to be well disposed to their race in the future also. Then they went up to Jerusalem, as the feast of weeks was close at hand.	31 Li ringraziarono e li esortarono a continuare nella loro benignità verso la loro nazione, e tornarono a Gerusalemme mentre era imminente la festa delle settimane. Giuda vince Gorgia e fa sacrifici per i morti
32 After the feast called Pentecost, they hastened against Gorgias, the governor of Idumea.	32 Dopo la Pentecoste marciarono contro Gorgia governatore dell'Idumea,
33 And he came out with three thousand infantry and four hundred cavalry.	33 Il quale avanzava con tre mila fanti e quattrocento cavalieri.
34 When they joined battle, it happened that a few of the Jews fell.	34 Attaccata la battaglia, alcuni dei Giudei rimasero uccisi.
35 But a certain Dositheus, one of Bacenor's men, who was on horseback and was a strong man, caught hold of Gorgias, and grasping his cloak was dragging him off by main strength, wishing to take the accursed man alive, when one of the Thracian horsemen bore down upon him and cut off his arm; so Gorgias escaped and reached Marisa.	35 Or mentre un certo Dositeo, cavaliere di Bacenore e valoroso, metteva le mani addosso a Gorgia per prenderlo vivo, un cavaliere Trace gli fu addosso e gli tagliò una spalla, e cosi Gorgia fuggì a Maresa.
36 As Esdris and his men had been fighting for a long time and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord to show himself their ally and leader in the battle.	36 Or siccome gli uomini di Esdrin dopo aver lungamente combattuto erano stanchi, Giuda invocò il Signore, affinchè fosse loro protettore e duce nella battaglia,
37 In the language of their fathers he raised the battle cry, with hymns; then he charged against Gorgias' men when they were not expecting it, and put them to flight.	37 e poi, cantando ad alta voce inni nel lin­guaggio natio, mise in fuga i soldati di Gorgia.
38 Then Judas assembled his army and went to the city of Adullam. As the seventh day was coming on, they purified themselves according to the custom, and they kept the sabbath there.	38 In seguito Giuda radunato l'esercito, giunse alla città di Odollam, e giunto il settimo giorno della settimana, purificatisi secondo il rito, celebrarono il sabato in quel medesimo luogo.
39 On the next day, as by that time it had become necessary, Judas and his men went to take up the bodies of the fallen and to bring them back to lie with their kinsmen in the sepulchres of their fathers.	39 Il giorno seguente Giuda coi suoi andò a prendere i corpi degli uccisi, per seppellirli coi loro parenti nelle tombe paterne.
40 Then under the tunic of every one of the dead they found sacred tokens of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids the Jews to wear. And it became clear to all that this was why these men had fallen.	40 Sotto le tuniche degli uccisi trovarono degli oggetti consacrati agl'idoli che erano stati in Iamnia, cose dalla legge proibite ai Giudei, e tutti furori persuasi che ciò fosse stato causa della loro morte.
41 So they all blessed the ways of the Lord, the righteous Judge, who reveals the things that are hidden;	41 E tutti benedissero il giusto giudizio del Signore che aveva manifestato il male nascosto.
42 and they turned to prayer, beseeching that the sin which had been committed might be wholly blotted out. And the noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves free from sin, for they had seen with their own eyes what had happened because of the sin of those who had fallen.	42 E poi si misero a pregare perchè fosse perdonato il delitto commesso. Allora il valorosissimo Giuda esortò il popolo a conservarsi senza peccato, giacché aveva visto coi propri! occhi quanto era accaduto per il peccato di quelli che erano stati uccisi.
43 He also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering. In doing this he acted very well and honorably, taking account of the resurrection.	43 Fatta poi una colletta, mandò a Gerusalemme dodici mila dramme d'argento, perchè fosse offerto il sacrifizio per i peccati di quei defunti, rettamente e piamente pensando intorno alla risurrezione.
44 For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead.	44 Infatti se non avesse sperai o nella loro risurrezione, superfluo e inutile sarebbe (a lui) sembrato pregare per i morti.
45 But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.	45 Egli invece pensò che grande ricompensa è riserbata a coloro che muoiono piamente.
	46 Santo adunque e salutare è il pensiero di pregare per i morti, affinchè siano sciolti dai loro peccati.
