1 Maccabees 8

1 Now Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they were very strong and were well-disposed toward all who made an alliance with them, that they pledged friendship to those who came to them,	1 Or Judas entendit parler des Romains. Ils étaient, disait-on, puissants, bienveillants aussienvers tous ceux qui s'attachaient à leur cause, accordant leur amitié à quiconque s'adressait à eux.
2 and that they were very strong. Men told him of their wars and of the brave deeds which they were doing among the Gauls, how they had defeated them and forced them to pay tribute,	2 (Leur puissance en effet était fort grande.) On lui raconta leurs guerres et les exploits qu'ilsavaient accomplis chez les Gaulois, comment ils s'étaient rendus maîtres de ce peuple et l'avaient soumis autribut,
3 and what they had done in the land of Spain to get control of the silver and gold mines there,	3 tout ce qu'ils avaient fait dans le pays d'Espagne pour s'emparer des mines d'argent et d'or quis'y trouvaient,
4 and how they had gained control of the whole region by their planning and patience, even though the place was far distant from them. They also subdued the kings who came against them from the ends of the earth, until they crushed them and inflicted great disaster upon them; the rest paid them tribute every year.	4 comment ils avaient eu raison de tout ce pays grâce à leur esprit averti et à leur persévérance(car l'endroit était fort éloigné de chez eux); il en avait été de même des rois venus pour les attaquer desextrémités de la terre, ils les avaient écrasés, leur infligeant un grand désastre, tandis que les autres leurapportaient un tribut annuel;
5 Philip, and Perseus king of the Macedonians, * and the others who rose up against them, they crushed in battle and conquered.	5 enfin ils avaient abattu par les armes Philippe, Persée, roi des Kitiens, et les autres quis'étaient levés contre eux, et ils les avaient soumis.
6 They also defeated Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who went to fight against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very large army. He was crushed by them;	6 Antiochus le Grand, roi de l'Asie, qui s'était avancé pour les combattre avec 120 éléphants, dela cavalerie, des chars et une armée considérable, avait été entièrement défait par eux
7 they took him alive and decreed that he and those who should reign after him should pay a heavy tribute and give hostages and surrender some of their best provinces,	7 et capturé vivant. A lui et à ses successeurs sur le trône étaient imposés, à termes fixés, lepaiement d'un lourd tribut et la livraison d'otages.
8 the country of India and Media and Lydia. These they took from him and gave to Eumenes the king.	8 On lui enlevait le pays indien, la Médie, la Lydie et quelques-unes de ses plus bellesprovinces au profit du roi Eumène.
9 The Greeks planned to come and destroy them,	9 Ceux de la Grèce ayant formé le dessein d'aller les exterminer,
10 but this became known to them, and they sent a general against the Greeks * and attacked them. Many of them were wounded and fell, and the Romans * took captive their wives and children; they plundered them, conquered the land, tore down their strongholds, and enslaved them to this day.	10 les Romains, l'ayant su, avaient envoyé contre eux un seul général; ils leur firent une guerreoù tombèrent un grand nombre de victimes, ils emmenèrent en captivité femmes et enfants, ils pillèrent leursbiens, assujettirent leurs pays, détruisirent leurs forteresses et réduisirent leurs personnes en servitude commeelles le sont encore aujourd'hui.
11 The remaining kingdoms and islands, as many as ever opposed them, they destroyed and enslaved;	11 Quant aux autres royaumes et aux îles qui leur avaient résisté, les Romains les avaientdétruits et asservis.
12 but with their friends and those who rely on them they have kept friendship. They have subdued kings far and near, and as many as have heard of their fame have feared them.	12 Mais à leurs amis et à ceux qui se reposent sur eux, ils ont gardé leur amitié. Ils ont assujettiles rois voisins et les rois éloignés, tous ceux qui entendent leur nom les redoutent.
13 Those whom they wish to help and to make kings, they make kings, and those whom they wish they depose; and they have been greatly exalted.	13 Tous ceux à qui ils veulent prêter secours et conférer la royauté, règnent; ils déposent aucontraire qui il leur plaît: ils ont atteint une puissance considérable.
14 Yet for all this not one of them has put on a crown or worn purple as a mark of pride,	14 Malgré tout cela aucun d'entre eux n'a ceint le diadème ni revêtu la pourpre pour en tirergloire.
15 but they have built for themselves a senate chamber, and every day three hundred and twenty senators constantly deliberate concerning the people, to govern them well.	15 Ils se sont créé un conseil où chaque jour délibèrent 320 membres continuellement occupésdu peuple pour le maintenir en bon ordre.
16 They trust one man each year to rule over them and to control all their land; they all heed the one man, and there is no envy or jealousy among them.	16 Ils confient chaque année à un seul homme le pouvoir et la domination sur tout leur empire:tous obéissent à ce seul homme sans qu'il y ait d'envie ou de jalousie parmi eux.
17 So Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish friendship and alliance,	17 Ayant choisi Eupolème, fils de Jean, de la maison d'Akkôs, et Jason, fils d'Eléazar, Judas lesenvoya à Rome conclure avec les Romains amitié et alliance,
18 and to free themselves from the yoke; for they saw that the kingdom of the Greeks was completely enslaving Israel.	18 et obtenir d'être délivrés du joug, car ils voyaient que la royauté des Grecs réduisait Israël enservitude.
19 They went to Rome, a very long journey; and they entered the senate chamber and spoke as follows:	19 Ils arrivèrent à Rome au bout d'un très long voyage et, entrés au Sénat, ils prirent la paroleen ces termes:
20 "Judas, who is also called Maccabeus, and his brothers and the people of the Jews have sent us to you to establish alliance and peace with you, that we may be enrolled as your allies and friends."	20 "Judas, dit Maccabée, et ses frères avec le peuple juif nous ont envoyés vers vous pourconclure avec vous un traité d'alliance et de paix et pour être inscrits au nombre de vos alliés et de vos amis."
21 The proposal pleased them,	21 La requête plut aux sénateurs.
22 and this is a copy of the letter which they wrote in reply, on bronze tablets, and sent to Jerusalem to remain with them there as a memorial of peace and alliance:	22 Voici la copie de la lettre qu'ils gravèrent sur des tables de bronze et envoyèrent à Jérusalempour y être chez les Juifs un document de paix et d'alliance:
23 "May all go well with the Romans and with the nation of the Jews at sea and on land for ever, and may sword and enemy be far from them.	23 "Prospérité aux Romains et à la nation des Juifs sur mer et sur terre à jamais! Loin d'eux leglaive et l'ennemi!
24 If war comes first to Rome or to any of their allies in all their dominion,	24 S'il arrive une guerre, à Rome d'abord, ou à quelqu'un de ses alliés sur toute l'étendue de sadomination,
25 the nation of the Jews shall act as their allies wholeheartedly, as the occasion may indicate to them.	25 la nation des Juifs combattra avec elle, suivant ce que lui dicteront les circonstances, de toutcoeur;
26 And to the enemy who makes war they shall not give or supply grain, arms, money, or ships, as Rome has decided; and they shall keep their obligations without receiving any return.	26 ils ne donneront aux adversaires et ne leur fourniront ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, nivaisseaux: ainsi en a décidé Rome, et ils garderont leurs engagements sans recevoir de garantie.
27 In the same way, if war comes first to the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall willingly act as their allies, as the occasion may indicate to them.	27 De même, s'il arrive d'abord une guerre à la nation des Juifs, les Romains combattront avecelle de toute leur âme, suivant ce que leur dicteront les circonstances.
28 And to the enemy allies shall be given no grain, arms, money, or ships, as Rome has decided; and they shall keep these obligations and do so without deceit.	28 Il ne sera donné aux assaillants ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux: ainsi en a décidéRome, et ils garderont leurs engagements sans dol.
29 Thus on these terms the Romans make a treaty with the Jewish people.	29 C'est en ces termes que les Romains ont conclu leur convention avec le peuple des Juifs.
30 If after these terms are in effect both parties shall determine to add or delete anything, they shall do so at their discretion, and any addition or deletion that they may make shall be valid.	30 Que si, dans la suite, les uns et les autres décident d'y ajouter ou en retrancher quelquechose, ils le feront à leur gré et ce qu'ils auront ajouté ou retranché sera obligatoire.
31 "And concerning the wrongs which King Demetrius is doing to them we have written to him as follows, 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?	31 Au sujet des maux que le roi Démétrius leur a causés, nous lui avons écrit en ces termes:Pourquoi fais-tu peser ton joug sur les Juifs, nos amis alliés?
32 If now they appeal again for help against you, we will defend their rights and fight you on sea and on land.'"	32 Si donc ils t'accusent encore, nous soutiendrons leurs droits et nous te combattrons sur meret sur terre."
