1 Maccabees 7

1 In the one hundred and fifty-first year * Demetrius the son of Seleucus set forth from Rome, sailed with a few men to a city by the sea, and there began to reign.	1 Nell’anno centocinquantuno Demetrio, figlio di Seleuco, partì da Roma e sbarcò con pochi uomini in una città della costa, dove si proclamò re.
2 As he was entering the royal palace of his fathers, the army seized Antiochus and Lysias to bring them to him.	2 Quando rientrò nella reggia dei suoi padri, l’esercito catturò Antioco e Lisia per consegnarglieli.
3 But when this act became known to him, he said, "Do not let me see their faces!"	3 Informato della cosa, disse: «Non mostratemi la loro faccia».
4 So the army killed them, and Demetrius took his seat upon the throne of his kingdom.	4 Perciò i soldati li uccisero e Demetrio sedette sul trono del suo regno.
5 Then there came to him all the lawless and ungodly men of Israel; they were led by Alcimus, who wanted to be high priest.	5 Allora andarono da lui tutti gli uomini iniqui e rinnegati d’Israele, guidati da Àlcimo, che aspirava al sommo sacerdozio.
6 And they brought to the king this accusation against the people: "Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends, and have driven us out of our land.	6 Essi accusarono il popolo davanti al re, dicendo: «Giuda con i suoi fratelli ha sterminato tutti i tuoi amici e ci ha strappato dal nostro paese.
7 Now then send a man whom you trust; let him go and see all the ruin which Judas * has brought upon us and upon the land of the king, and let him punish them and all who help them."	7 Ora manda un uomo fidato che venga e prenda visione della rovina generale procurata da lui a noi e ai domìni del re e provveda a punire quella famiglia e tutti i suoi sostenitori».
8 So the king chose Bacchides, one of the king's friends, governor of the province Beyond the River; he was a great man in the kingdom and was faithful to the king.	8 Il re designò Bàcchide, uno degli amici del re, preposto alla regione dell’Oltrefiume, potente nel regno e fedele al re,
9 And he sent him, and with him the ungodly Alcimus, whom he made high priest; and he commanded him to take vengeance on the sons of Israel.	9 e lo inviò con il rinnegato Àlcimo; attribuì a questi il sommo sacerdozio e gli diede ordine di fare vendetta contro gli Israeliti.
10 So they marched away and came with a large force into the land of Judah; and he sent messengers to Judas and his brothers with peaceable but treacherous words.	10 Così partirono e giunsero in Giudea con forze numerose. Bàcchide mandò messaggeri a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli, per portare con inganno parole di pace.
11 But they paid no attention to their words, for they saw that they had come with a large force.	11 Ma essi non credettero alle loro parole: avevano infatti saputo che erano giunti con un forte esercito.
12 Then a group of scribes appeared in a body before Alcimus and Bacchides to ask for just terms.	12 Un gruppo di scribi si radunò tuttavia presso Àlcimo e Bàcchide, per chiedere il riconoscimento dei diritti.
13 The Hasideans were first among the sons of Israel to seek peace from them,	13 Gli Asidei furono i primi tra gli Israeliti a chiedere loro la pace.
14 for they said, "A priest of the line of Aaron has come with the army, and he will not harm us."	14 Dicevano infatti: «Un sacerdote della stirpe di Aronne è venuto con i soldati, non ci farà certo del male».
15 And he spoke peaceable words to them and swore this oath to them, "We will not seek to injure you or your friends."	15 Egli usò con loro parole di pace e giurò loro: «Non faremo alcun male né a voi né ai vostri amici».
16 So they trusted him; but he seized sixty of them and killed them in one day, in accordance with the word which was written,	16 E quelli gli credettero. Ma egli prese sessanta di loro e li uccise in un solo giorno, proprio secondo la parola che sta scritta:
17 "The flesh of thy saints and their blood they poured out round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them."	17 «Le carni dei tuoi fedeli e il loro sangue hanno versato intorno a Gerusalemme e nessuno li seppelliva».
18 Then the fear and dread of them fell upon all the people, for they said, "There is no truth or justice in them, for they have violated the agreement and the oath which they swore."	18 Allora la paura e il terrore si sparsero per tutto il popolo, perché dicevano: «Non c’è in loro verità né giustizia, perché hanno trasgredito il patto e il giuramento prestato».
19 Then Bacchides departed from Jerusalem and encamped in Beth-zaith. And he sent and seized many of the men who had deserted to him, * and some of the people, and killed them and threw them into a great pit.	19 Bàcchide poi levò il campo da Gerusalemme e si accampò a Bet-Zait; mandò ad arrestare molti degli uomini che erano passati dalla sua parte e alcuni del popolo, e li fece uccidere e gettare in un grande pozzo.
20 He placed Alcimus in charge of the country and left with him a force to help him; then Bacchides went back to the king.	20 Affidò il paese ad Àlcimo e gli lasciò soldati che lo sostenessero; quindi Bàcchide fece ritorno dal re.
21 Alcimus strove for the high priesthood,	21 Àlcimo lottava per il sommo sacerdozio;
22 and all who were troubling their people joined him. They gained control of the land of Judah and did great damage in Israel.	22 i perturbatori del popolo si unirono tutti a lui, si impadronirono della Giudea e procurarono grandi sventure a Israele.
23 And Judas saw all the evil that Alcimus and those with him had done among the sons of Israel; it was more than the Gentiles had done.	23 Giuda vide tutti i mali che Àlcimo e i suoi fautori facevano agli Israeliti, peggio dei pagani;
24 So Judas * went out into all the surrounding parts of Judea, and took vengeance on the men who had deserted, and he prevented those in the city * from going out into the country.	24 uscì allora nelle regioni intorno alla Giudea, fece vendetta degli uomini che avevano disertato e impedì loro di fare scorrerie nella regione.
25 When Alcimus saw that Judas and those with him had grown strong, and realized that he could not withstand them, he returned to the king and brought wicked charges against them.	25 Quando Àlcimo vide che Giuda e i suoi si erano rinforzati e che non avrebbe potuto resistere loro, ritornò presso il re e li accusò di cose malvagie.
26 Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his honored princes, who hated and detested Israel, and he commanded him to destroy the people.	26 Allora il re mandò Nicànore, uno dei suoi capi più illustri, che nutriva odio e inimicizia per Israele, e gli ordinò di sterminare il popolo.
27 So Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a large force, and treacherously sent to Judas and his brothers this peaceable message,	27 Nicànore venne a Gerusalemme con truppe ingenti e mandò messaggeri a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli, a far queste proposte ingannevoli di pace:
28 "Let there be no fighting between me and you; I shall come with a few men to see you face to face in peace."	28 «Non ci sia battaglia tra me e voi. Verrò con pochi uomini, per incontrarmi con voi pacificamente».
29 So he came to Judas, and they greeted one another peaceably. But the enemy were ready to seize Judas.	29 Venne da Giuda e si salutarono a vicenda con segni di pace: ma i nemici stavano pronti per metter le mani su Giuda.
30 It became known to Judas that Nicanor * had come to him with treacherous intent, and he was afraid of him and would not meet him again.	30 Quando Giuda fu informato che quello era venuto da lui con inganno, ebbe timore di lui e non volle più vedere la sua faccia.
31 When Nicanor learned that his plan had been disclosed, he went out to meet Judas in battle near Caphar-salama.	31 Nicànore allora, come vide che il suo piano era stato scoperto, uscì all’attacco contro Giuda verso Cafarsalamà,
32 About five hundred men of the army of Nicanor fell, and the rest * fled into the city of David.	32 e caddero dalla parte di Nicànore circa cinquecento uomini. Poi ripararono nella Città di Davide.
33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the sanctuary, and some of the elders of the people, to greet him peaceably and to show him the burnt offering that was being offered for the king.	33 Dopo questi fatti Nicànore salì al monte Sion e gli vennero incontro dal santuario alcuni sacerdoti e anziani del popolo, per salutarlo con espressioni di pace e mostrargli l’olocausto offerto per il re.
34 But he mocked them and derided them and defiled them and spoke arrogantly,	34 Ma egli li schernì, li derise, anzi li oltraggiò e parlò con arroganza;
35 and in anger he swore this oath, "Unless Judas and his army are delivered into my hands this time, then if I return safely I will burn up this house." And he went out in great anger.	35 giurò incollerito: «Se non sarà consegnato subito Giuda e il suo esercito nelle mie mani, quando tornerò a guerra finita, darò alle fiamme questo tempio». E se ne andò tutto furioso.
36 Then the priests went in and stood before the altar and the temple, and they wept and said,	36 I sacerdoti rientrarono e stando davanti all’altare e al tempio dissero piangendo:
37 "Thou didst choose this house to be called by thy name, and to be for thy people a house of prayer and supplication.	37 «Tu hai scelto questo tempio, perché su di esso fosse invocato il tuo nome e fosse casa di orazione e di supplica per il tuo popolo.
38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fall by the sword; remember their blasphemies, and let them live no longer."	38 Fa’ vendetta di quest’uomo e delle sue schiere; siano trafitti di spada. Ricòrdati delle loro bestemmie: non lasciarli sopravvivere».
39 Now Nicanor went out from Jerusalem and encamped in Beth-horon, and the Syrian army joined him.	39 Nicànore uscì da Gerusalemme, si accampò a Bet-Oron e l’esercito della Siria gli andò incontro.
40 And Judas encamped in Adasa with three thousand men. Then Judas prayed and said,	40 Giuda pose il campo in Adasà con tremila uomini e pregò:
41 "When the messengers from the king spoke blasphemy, thy angel went forth and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of the Assyrians. *	41 «Quando gli ufficiali del re assiro lanciarono bestemmie, venne il tuo angelo e ne abbatté centoottantacinquemila:
42 So also crush this army before us today; let the rest learn that Nicanor * has spoken wickedly against the sanctuary, and judge him according to this wickedness."	42 abbatti allo stesso modo questo esercito davanti a noi oggi; sappiano gli altri che egli ha parlato empiamente contro il tuo santuario e giudicalo secondo la sua malvagità».
43 So the armies met in battle on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. The army of Nicanor was crushed, and he himself was the first to fall in the battle.	43 Si scontrarono gli eserciti in combattimento il tredici del mese di Adar e fu sconfitto l’esercito di Nicànore, anzi egli cadde in battaglia per primo.
44 When his army saw that Nicanor had fallen, they threw down their arms and fled.	44 Quando i suoi soldati videro che Nicànore era caduto, gettarono le armi e fuggirono.
45 The Jews * pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa as far as Gazara, and as they followed kept sounding the battle call on the trumpets.	45 Li inseguirono per una giornata di cammino, da Adasà fino a Ghezer, suonando le trombe dietro a loro per dare l’allarme.
46 And men came out of all the villages of Judea round about, and they out-flanked the enemy * and drove them back to their pursuers, * so that they all fell by the sword; not even one of them was left.	46 Uscirono allora uomini da tutti i villaggi circostanti della Giudea e li accerchiarono; essi si voltavano gli uni contro gli altri e caddero tutti di spada: non ne scampò neppure uno.
47 Then the Jews * seized the spoils and the plunder, and they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand which he so arrogantly stretched out, and brought them and displayed them just outside Jerusalem.	47 I Giudei presero le spoglie e il bottino, mozzarono la testa di Nicànore e la sua destra, che aveva steso con arroganza, e le portarono nei pressi di Gerusalemme, dove le esposero.
48 The people rejoiced greatly and celebrated that day as a day of great gladness.	48 Il popolo fece gran festa e trascorse quel giorno come un solenne giorno di gioia.
49 And they decreed that this day should be celebrated each year on the thirteenth day of Adar.	49 Stabilirono di celebrare ogni anno questo giorno il tredici di Adar.
50 So the land of Judah had rest for a few days.	50 Così la Giudea rimase tranquilla per un po’ di tempo.
