1 Maccabees 14

1 In the one hundred and seventy-second year * Demetrius the king assembled his forces and marched into Media to secure help, so that he could make war against Trypho.	1 L'anno centosettantadue, il re Demetrio, messo insieme il suo esercito, andò nella Media, a radunar truppe ausiliarie, per combattere Trifone.
2 When Arsaces the king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had invaded his territory, he sent one of his commanders to take him alive.	2 Ma Arsace re della Persia, avendo sentito che Demetrio era entrato nel suo territorio, mandò uno dei suoi generali, perchè lo prendesse vivo e lo portasse a lui.
3 And he went and defeated the army of Demetrius, and seized him and took him to Arsaces, who put him under guard.	3 E (il generale) andò, mise in rotta l'esercito di Demetrio, e prese Demetrio e lo condusse ad Arsace, che lo fece mettere in prigione.
4 The land * had rest all the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation; his rule was pleasing to them, as was the honor shown him, all his days.	4 Il paese di Giuda fu tutto in pace durante tutto il tempo di Simone, il quale cercò i vantaggi della sua nazione, che vide sempre con piacere la sua potenza e la sua gloria.
5 To crown all his honors he took Joppa for a harbor, and opened a way to the isles of the sea.	5 Oltre a tutte le sue gesta gloriose, egli prese e ridusse a porto Ioppe, e lo fece scalo delle isole del mare.
6 He extended the borders of his nation, and gained full control of the country.	6 E ampliò il territorio della sua nazione, e fu padrone del paese.
7 He gathered a host of captives; he ruled over Gazara and Beth-zur and the citadel, and he removed its uncleanness from it; and there was none to oppose him.	7 E radunò gran numero di prigionieri, ed ebbe il dominio di Gazara e di Betsura e della cittadella, e ne tolse via le immondezze, e non c'era chi potesse resistergli.
8 They tilled their land in peace; the ground gave its increase, and the trees of the plains their fruit.	8 E ciascuno coltivava in pace la sua terra, e la terra di Giuda dava le sue raccolte, e le piante dei campi davano il loro frutto.
9 Old men sat in the streets; they all talked together of good things; and the youths donned the glories and garments of war.	9 Gli anziani stavano assisi nelle piazze, e s'intrattenevano su ciò che era di vantaggio al paese, la gioventù si copriva di splendide vesti e di abiti da guerra.
10 He supplied the cities with food, and furnished them with the means of defense, till his renown spread to the ends of the earth.	10 Simone distribuiva i viveri alle città, e le rendeva come tante fortezze, in modo che il suo nome e la sua gloria si sparse fino agli ultimi confini del mondo.
11 He established peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy.	11 Egli diede la pace al paese, e Israele ne esultò con grande gioia.
12 Each man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to make them afraid.	12 Così ciascuno stava assiso all'ombra della sua vite e all'ombra del suo fico, e nessuno veniva a spaventarli.
13 No one was left in the land to fight them, and the kings were crushed in those days.	13 Non restava più sulla terra chi facesse loro guerra: i re in quel tempo erano abbattuti.
14 He strengthened all the humble of his people; he sought out the law, and did away with every lawless and wicked man.	14 Egli fu il protettore degli umili del suo popolo, e, zelante della legge, fece sparire gl'iniqui e i malvagi.
15 He made the sanctuary glorious, and added to the vessels of the sanctuary.	15 Glorificò il santuario e moltiplicò i vasi santi.
16 It was heard in Rome, and as far away as Sparta, that Jonathan had died, and they were deeply grieved.	16 Quando la notizia della morte di Gionata giunse fino a Roma e a Sparta, recò loro gran dispiacere;
17 When they heard that Simon his brother had become high priest in his place, and that he was ruling over the country and the cities in it	17 ma avendo sentito che il suo fratello Simone era stato fatto sommo sacerdote in luogo di lui, e che aveva il dominio della regione e delle città che vi erano,
18 they wrote to him on bronze tablets to renew with him the friendship and alliance which they had established with Judas and Jonathan his brothers.	18 scrissero a lui in tavole di bronzo, per rinnovare l'amicizia e l'alleanza fatta con Giuda e con Gionata suoi fratelli.
19 And these were read before the assembly in Jerusalem.	19 E le lettere furono lette a Gerusalemme davanti a tutta l'assemblea. Ecco la copia della lettera mandata dagli Spartani:
20 This is a copy of the letter which the Spartans sent: "The rulers and the city of the Spartans to Simon the high priest and to the elders and the priests and the rest of the Jewish people, our brethren, greeting.	20 « I principi e la città degli Spartani, a Simone, sommo sacerdote, agli anziani, ai sacerdoti e al resto del popolo dei Giudei, loro fratelli, salute.
21 The envoys who were sent to our people have told us about your glory and honor, and we rejoiced at their coming.	21 Gli ambasciatori, mandati da voi al nostro popolo, ci hanno fatto sapere la vostra gloria e felicità e contentezza, e la loro venuta ci ha recato molto piacere.
22 And what they said we have recorded in our public decrees, as follows, 'Numenius the son of Antiochus and Antipater the son of Jason, envoys of the Jews, have come to us to renew their friendship with us.	22 E abbiamo fatto scrivere nelle assemblee del popolo ciò che essi hanno detto, cioè: Numenio di Antioco, e Antipatro di Giasone, ambasciatori dei Giudei, son venuti da noi, per rinnovare con noi l'antica amicizia.
23 It has pleased our people to receive these men with honor and to put a copy of their words in the public archives, so that the people of the Spartans may have a record of them. And they have sent a copy of this to Simon the high priest.'"	23 È piaciuto al popolo di accogliere tali uomini con onore, e di porre una copia delle loro parole nei libri particolari del popolo, perchè sia un ricordo per il popolo degli Spartani; e una copia di tale scrittura l'abbiamo mandata al sommo sacerdote Simone ».
24 After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a large gold shield weighing a thousand minas, to confirm the alliance with the Romans. *	24 Di poi Simone mandò a Roma Numenio, con un grande scudo d'oro che pesava mille mine, a stabilire con essi l'alleanza. Quando il popolo romano sentì
25 When the people heard these things they said, "How shall we thank Simon and his sons?	25 tali cose, disse: « Quali ringraziamenti potremo rendere a Simone e ai suoi figli?
26 For he and his brothers and the house of his father have stood firm; they have fought and repulsed Israel's enemies and established its freedom."	26 Egli ha ristabiliti i suoi fratelli, ha sterminati e cacciati i nemici d'Israele, al quale ha assicurato la libertà ». 27 So they made a record on bronze tablets and put it upon pillars on Mount Zion. This is a copy of what they wrote: "On the eighteenth day of Elul, in the one hundred and seventy-second year, * which is the third year of Simon the great high priest,	27 Ecco la copia dello scritto: « Il diciotto del mese di Elui, l'anno centosettantadue, il terzo anno di Simone, sommo sacerdote, in Asaramel,

29 "Since wars often occurred in the country, Simon the son of Mattathias, a priest of the sons * of Joarib, and his brothers, exposed themselves to danger and resisted the enemies of their nation, in order that their sanctuary and the law might be perserved; and they brought great glory to their nation.	29 Simone, figlio di Matatia, della stirpe di Iarib, e i suoi fratelli si esposero al pericolo, opponendosi ai nemici della loro nazione, affinchè restasse il loro santuario e la legge, ed hanno acquistata grande gloria alla loro nazione.

33 He fortified the cities of Judea, and Beth-zur on the borders of Judea, where formerly the arms of the enemy had been stored, and he placed there a garrison of Jews.	33 Egli fortificò le città della Giudea, e Betsura, ai confini della Giudea, dove prima erano le armi nemiche, e vi pose un presidio di Giudei.
34 He also fortified Joppa, which is by the sea, and Gazara, which is on the borders of Azotus, where the enemy formerly dwelt. 35 "The people saw Simon's faithfulness * and the glory which he had resolved to win for his nation, and they made him their leader and high priest, because he had done all these things and because of the justice and loyalty which he had maintained toward his nation. He sought in every way to exalt his people.	35 Il popolo, vedendo le gesta di Simone, la gloria che si proponeva di dare alla sua nazione, lo dichiarò suo duce e principe dei sacerdoti, a causa di tutte queste cose da lui fatte, e della giustizia e della fede da lui conservata alla sua nazione, e per avere egli cercato ogni modo d'ingrandire il suo popolo.
36 And in his days things prospered in his hands, so that the Gentiles were put out of the * country, as were also the men in the city of David in Jerusalem, who had built themselves a citadel from which they used to sally forth and defile the environs of the sanctuary and do great damage to its purity.	36 Durante la sua vita (tutto) ha prosperato nelle sue mani, tanto che sono state cacciate le nazioni dai territori da i loro occupati, e quelli che erano nella città di David, in Gerusalemme, nella cittadella, da cui uscivano a profanare tutto ciò che era intorno al santuario, facendo grandi insulti alla sua santità.
37 He settled Jews in it, and fortified it for the safety of the country and of the city, and built the walls of Jerusalem higher.	37 Egli vi pose dei Giudei a difesa del paese e della città, e rialzò le mura di Gerusalemme,
38 "In view of these things King Demetrius confirmed him in the high priesthood,	38 Il re Demetrio lo confermò nel sommo sacerdozio,
39 and he made him one of the king's * friends and paid him high honors.	39 lo dichiarò suo amico, e lo glorificò con grandi onori,
40 For he had heard that the Jews were addressed by the Romans as friends and allies and brethren, and that the Romans * had received the envoys of Simon with honor.	40 avendo saputo che i Giudei erano stati dichiarati amici, alleati, fratelli dai Romani, i quali avevano accolto con onore gli ambasciatori di Simone.
41 "And * the Jews and their priests decided that Simon should be their leader and high priest for ever, until a trustworthy prophet should arise,	41 I Giudei e i loro sacerdoti di comune consenso hanno stabilito che egli sia loro duce e sommo sacerdote in eterno, fino alla venuta del profeta fedele.
42 and that he should be governor over them and that he should take charge of the sanctuary and appoint men over its tasks and over the country and the weapons and the strongholds, and that he should take charge of the sanctuary,	42 (Hanno stabilito) che egli sia loro capo, che abbia cura delle cose sante, stabilisca gli ufficiali sopra le loro opere, sopra il paese, sopra le armi, sopra le fortezze,
43 and that he should be obeyed by all, and that all contracts in the country should be written in his name, and that he should be clothed in purple and wear gold.	43 e amministri le cose del santuario, e sia obbedito da tutti, e siano scritti in suo nome tutti gli atti dello stato, e indossi la porpora e l'oro.
44 "And none of the people or priests shall be permitted to nullify any of these decisions or to oppose what he says, or to convene an assembly in the country without his permission, or to be clothed in purple or put on a gold buckle.	44 Non sarà permesso a nessuno del popolo nè ai sacerdoti di non far conto di questi ordini, o di contraddire a quello che egli avrà stabilito, o di convocar le adunanze nel paese senza di lui, o vestir di porpora o usar la fibbia d'oro.
45 Whoever acts contrary to these decisions or nullifies any of them shall be liable to punishment."	45 Chiunque agirà contro questi ordini, o ne violerà qualcuno, sarà reo.
46 And all the people agreed to grant Simon the right to act in accord with these decisions.	46 E piacque al popolo tutto di dare il potere a Simone, e di agire secondo questi decreti.
47 So Simon accepted and agreed to be high priest, to be commander and ethnarch of the Jews and priests, and to be protector of them all. *	47 E Simone accettò, e gradì di esercitare le funzioni di sommo sacerdote, di essere duce e principe della nazione dei Giudei, e dei sacerdoti, e di avere il comando supremo».
48 And they gave orders to inscribe this decree upon bronze tablets, to put them up in a conspicuous place in the precincts of the sanctuary,	48 E stabilirono di incidere questo decreto in tavole di bronzo, da porsi nel portico del tempio, in luogo distinto, di depositarne una copia nell'erario, da servire a Simone e ai suoi figli.
49 and to deposit copies of them in the treasury, so that Simon and his sons might have them.
