Exodus 33

1 The LORD said to Moses, "Depart, go up hence, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, 'To your descendants I will give it.'	1 E il Signore parlò a Mosè e disse: « Va, sali da questo luogo col tuo popolo che hai tratto dalla terra d'Egitto, verso il paese che promisi con giuramento ad Abramo, a Isacco, a Giacobbe, dicendo: Io la darò alla tua posterità.
2 And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.	2 Io poi manderò dinanzi a te un angelo a cacciare il Cananeo, l'Amorreo, l'Eteo, il Ferezeo, l'Eveo, il Gebuseo,
3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you in the way, for you are a stiff-necked people."	3 affìnchè tu possa entrare nella terra che stilla latte e miele. Io però non salirò teco, perchè sei un popolo di dura cervice, e ti sterminerei per via ».
4 When the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned; and no man put on his ornaments.	4 Il popolo come ebbe sentite queste dure parole, pianse, e nessuno si mise i propri ornamenti.
5 For the LORD had said to Moses, "Say to the people of Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what to do with you.'"	5 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Di' ai figli d'Israele: Sei un popolo di dura cervice, se io venissi per una sola volta in mezzo a te ti sterminerei. Per ora deponi i tuoi ornamenti, e così vedrò come ti debba trattare ».
6 Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.	6 E i figli d'Israele deposero i loro ornamenti dal monte Oreb in poi.
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp; and he called it the tent of meeting. And every one who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.	7 E Mosè, preso il Tabernacolo, lo tese in lontananza, fuori degli accampamenti e lo chiamò il Tabernacolo dell'alleanza. Così tutti quelli del popolo che avevan qualche questione, andavano al Tabernacolo dell'alleanza fuori degli accampamenti.
8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose up, and every man stood at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he had gone into the tent.	8 E quando Mosè usciva per andare al Tabernacolo, tutto il popolo si alzava, e ciascuno stava fermo sulla porta della sua tenda, seguendo collo sguardo Mosè, finché non fosse entralo nel Tabernacolo.
9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the door of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses.	9 E appena era entralo nel Tabernacolo dell'alleanza, la colonna di nuvola scendeva e si fermava alla porta, o Dio parlava con Mosè,
10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, every man at his tent door.	10 mentre tutti miravano la colonna di nuvola ferma all'entrata del Tabernacolo. Allora il popolo restava immobile, adorando ciascuno il Signore, prostrato all'ingresso della propria tenda.
11 Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent.	11 E il Signore parlava con Mosè faccia a faccia, come l'uomo suol parlare col proprio amico. E quando Mosè tornava agli accampamenti, il suo giovane ministro Giosuè, figlio di Nun, non si moveva dal Tabernacolo.
12 Moses said to the LORD, "See, thou sayest to me, 'Bring up this people'; but thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.'	12 E Mosè disse al Signore: « Ecco, tu mi comandi di condurre questo popolo, e non mi fai conoscere colui che man derai meco, dopo avermi detto: Ti conosco personalmente, e tu hai trovato grazia davanti a me.
13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, show me now thy ways, that I may know thee and find favor in thy sight. Consider too that this nation is thy people."	13 Se dunque io ho trovato grazia nel tuo cospetto, fammi veder la tua faccia, affinchè io ti conosca e trovi grazia dinanzi agli occhi tuoi: riguarda come tuo popolo questa nazione ».
14 And he said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."	14 E il Signore disse: « La mia presenza ti precederà, ed io ti darò riposo ».
15 And he said to him, "If thy presence will not go with me, do not carry us up from here.	15 E Mosè: « Se tu stesso non vai innanzi, non ci far partire di qui.
16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in thy sight, I and thy people? Is it not in thy going with us, so that we are distinct, I and thy people, from all other people that are upon the face of the earth?"	16 Da che infatti io e il popolo potremo conoscere di aver trovata grazia nel tuo cospetto, se tu non vieni con noi, affinchè siamo glorificati da tutti i popoli della terra? »
17 And the LORD said to Moses, "This very thing that you have spoken I will do; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name."	17 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Farò anche questo che tu chiedi, perchè tu hai trovato grazia davanti a me e ti conosco personalmente ».
18 Moses said, "I pray thee, show me thy glory."	18 E Mosè disse: « Fammi veder la tua gloria! »
19 And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD'; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.	19 Rispose il Signore: « Io ti mostrerò ogni bene, e pronunzierò dinanzi a te il nome del Signore; e avrò misericordia di chi vorrò, e sarò clemente verso chi mi piace ».
20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face; for man shall not see me and live."	20 E aggiunse: « Non potrai veder la mia faccia, perchè l'uomo non può vedermi e restar vivo ».
21 And the LORD said, "Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand upon the rock;	21 E soggiunse: « Ecco un luogo a me vicino: tu sta su quella pietra,
22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;	22 e quando la mia gloria passerà, io ti nasconderò in una fessura della roccia e ti coprirò colla mia destra finché io non sia passato;
23 then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen."	23 poi ritirerò la mano e vedrai il mio tergo; ma la mia faccia non potrai vederla ».
