Exodus 33

1 The LORD said to Moses, "Depart, go up hence, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, 'To your descendants I will give it.'	1 Yahvé dit à Moïse: "Va, monte d'ici, toi et le peuple que tu as fait monter du pays d'Egypte, vers laterre dont j'ai dit par serment à Abraham, Isaac et Jacob que je la donnerais à leur descendance.
2 And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.	2 J'enverrai un ange devant toi et j'expulserai les Cananéens, les Amorites, les Hittites, les Perizzites,les Hivvites et les Jébuséens.
3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you in the way, for you are a stiff-necked people."	3 Monte vers une terre qui ruisselle de lait et de miel, mais je ne monterai pas au milieu de toi, de peurque je ne t'extermine en chemin car tu es un peuple à la nuque raide."
4 When the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned; and no man put on his ornaments.	4 Lorsqu'il eut entendu cette parole sévère, le peuple prit le deuil et personne ne porta plus sesparures.
5 For the LORD had said to Moses, "Say to the people of Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what to do with you.'"	5 Alors Yahvé dit à Moïse: "Dis aux Israélites: Vous êtes un peuple à la nuque raide, si je montais aumilieu de toi, ne fût-ce qu'un moment, je t'exterminerais. Et maintenant, dépouille-toi de tes parures, que je sachecomment te traiter."
6 Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.	6 Alors les Israélites se débarrassèrent de leurs parures à partir du mont Horeb.
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp; and he called it the tent of meeting. And every one who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.	7 Moïse prenait la Tente et la plantait pour lui hors du camp, loin du camp. Il la nomma Tente duRendez-vous, et quiconque avait à consulter Yahvé sortait vers la Tente du Rendez-vous qui se trouvait hors ducamp.
8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose up, and every man stood at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he had gone into the tent.	8 Chaque fois que Moïse sortait vers la Tente, tout le peuple se levait, chacun se postait à l'entrée desa tente, et suivait Moïse du regard jusqu'à ce qu'il entrât dans la Tente.
9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the door of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses.	9 Chaque fois que Moïse entrait dans la Tente, la colonne de nuée descendait, se tenait à l'entrée de laTente et Il parlait avec Moïse.
10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, every man at his tent door.	10 Tout le peuple voyait la colonne de nuée qui se tenait à l'entrée de la Tente, et tout le peuple selevait et se prosternait, chacun à l'entrée de sa tente.
11 Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent.	11 Yahvé parlait à Moïse face à face, comme un homme parle à son ami, puis il rentrait au camp,mais son serviteur Josué, fils de Nûn, un jeune homme, ne quittait pas l'intérieur de la Tente.
12 Moses said to the LORD, "See, thou sayest to me, 'Bring up this people'; but thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.'	12 Moïse dit à Yahvé: "Vois, tu me dis: Fais monter ce peuple, et tu ne me fais pas connaître qui tuenverras avec moi. Tu avais pourtant dit: Je te connais par ton nom et tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux.
13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, show me now thy ways, that I may know thee and find favor in thy sight. Consider too that this nation is thy people."	13 Si donc j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, daigne me faire connaître tes voies pour que je te connaisse etque je trouve grâce à tes yeux. Considère aussi que cette nation est ton peuple."
14 And he said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."	14 Yahvé dit: "J'irai moi-même, et je te donnerai le repos."
15 And he said to him, "If thy presence will not go with me, do not carry us up from here.	15 Et il dit: "Si tu ne viens pas toi-même, ne nous fais pas monter d'ici;
16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in thy sight, I and thy people? Is it not in thy going with us, so that we are distinct, I and thy people, from all other people that are upon the face of the earth?"	16 comment saura-t-on alors que j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, moi et ton peuple? N'est-ce pas à ce quetu iras avec nous? En sorte que nous soyons distincts, moi et ton peuple, de tous les peuples qui sont sur la facede la terre."
17 And the LORD said to Moses, "This very thing that you have spoken I will do; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name."	17 Yahvé dit à Moïse: "Cette chose que tu as dite, je la ferai encore parce que tu as trouvé grâce à mesyeux et que je te connais par ton nom."
18 Moses said, "I pray thee, show me thy glory."	18 Il lui dit: "Fais-moi de grâce voir ta gloire."
19 And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD'; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.	19 Et il dit: "Je ferai passer devant toi toute ma beauté et je prononcerai devant toi le nom de Yahvé.Je fais grâce à qui je fais grâce et j'ai pitié de qui j'ai pitié."
20 But," he said, "you cannot see my face; for man shall not see me and live."	20 "Mais, dit-il, tu ne peux pas voir ma face, car l'homme ne peut me voir et vivre."
21 And the LORD said, "Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand upon the rock;	21 Yahvé dit encore: "Voici une place près de moi; tu te tiendras sur le rocher.
22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;	22 Quand passera ma gloire, je te mettrai dans la fente du rocher et je te couvrirai de ma main jusqu'àce que je sois passé.
23 then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen."	23 Puis j'écarterai ma main et tu verras mon dos; mais ma face, on ne peut la voir."
