Esther 16

1 The following is a copy of this letter: "The Great King, Artaxerxes, to the rulers of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, one hundred and twenty-seven satrapies, and to those who are loyal to our government, greeting.	1 Questo è lo esempio della epistola dello re Artaserse, la qual lui mandò in favore degli Giudei a tutte le sue provincie; e non si trova in li libri Ebrei, Lo grande re Artaserse dall' India insino alla Etiopia, in cento XXVII provincie, a tutti i prìncipi e rettori e vicarii, i quali sono sotto la nostra suggezione, salute (e buono amore).
2 "The more often they are honored by the too great kindness of their benefactors, the more proud do many men become.	2 Per molto amore e stato, che alcuno hae avuto dalla nostra signoria, sono saliti in superbia (tanto che i loro compagni riputavano a nulla).
3 They not only seek to injure our subjects, but in their inability to stand prosperity they even undertake to scheme against their own benefactors.	3 E non solo cercano di opprimere li sudditi alli re, ma (la sentenza regale per loro consiglio hanno voluto rompere, e) delli loro onori non sono stati conoscenti; e hanno cercato di procurare insidie contro a quelli dalli quali sono stati onorati (e hanno ricevuto questi onori).
4 They not only take away thankfulness from among men, but, carried away by the boasts of those who know nothing of goodness they suppose that they will escape the evil-hating justice of God, who always sees everything.	4 E credendo essere d' ogni cosa degni, e contro a coloro, i quali tutti i nostri comandamenti senza alcuno difetto osservano, e nelle loro operazioni sono degni di essere onorati,
5 And often many of those who are set in places of authority have been made in part responsible for the shedding of innocent blood, and have been involved in irremediable calamities, by the persuasion of friends who have been entrusted with the administration of public affairs,	5 con loro mentiri proponendo a noi il falso, contra di loro falsa sentenzia hanno fatta dare; e questo è per molte parole false, le quali tutto dì alla nostra presenza riportavano; e perciò che sempre abbiamo loro creduto, imaginando che fossero leali alla corona, sì lo credemmo.
6 when these men by the false trickery of their evil natures beguile the sincere good will of their sovereigns.	6 Onde si de' provvedere che la sentenza data non venga ad effetto, non riputando che dalla nostra parte sia largita; ma fassi per tornare alla veritade e alla giustizia.
7 "What has been wickedly accomplished through the pestilent behavior of those who exercise authority unworthily, can be seen not so much from the more ancient records which we hand on as from investigation of matters close at hand.	7 E sì come tutte le antiche istorie provano, e per le cose che ogni giorno accadono, come per male relazioni d'alcuni li pensieri delli re sono depravali;
8 For the future we will take care to render our kingdom quiet and peaceable for all men,	8 però voglio dare provisione alla pace di tutte le provincie.
9 by changing our methods and always judging what comes before our eyes with more equitable consideration.	9 E anco non dovete pensare, che se noi comandiamo diverse cose, che questo proceda per nostra leggerezza, ma per la condizione e necessità de' tempi, acciò che la utilità della cosa publica possi fare giudicio.
10 For Haman, the son of Hammedatha, a Macedonian (really an alien to the Persian blood, and quite devoid of our kindliness), having become our guest,	10 Ma perciò che lo intendimento mio abbiate più certo, io vi manifesteroe che questo male ha voluto fare Aman figliuolo di Amadati, e dell' animo e della nazione di Macedonia, forestiere alla gente di Persia, occultandosi a noi la sua malizia per la nostra benignità. Venendo a noi forestiere, in grande stato lo ricevemmo.
11 so far enjoyed the good will that we have for every nation that he was called our father and was continually bowed sown to by all as the person second to the royal throne.	11 E intanto lo avemo fatto grande, che di tutta la gente secondo allo re era onorato e adorato.
12 But, unable to restrain his arrogance, he undertook to deprive us of our kingdom and our life,	12 E a tanto era venuto, che desiderava di levarci dalla nostra potenza per possederla a sè.
13 and with intricate craft and deceit asked for destruction of Mordecai, our savior and perpetual benefactor, and of Esther, the blameless partner of our kingdom, together with their whole nation.	13 E a Mardocheo il quale è a noi grazioso, e alla regina Ester la quale è nostra donna, e a tutti quelli della gente loro, con suoi inganni sì fece dare sentenza di morte;
14 He thought that in this way he would find us undefended and would transfer the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians.	14 imaginando (che) morti costoro (e io rimanendo con poca gente) di volere egli a me resistere, e il regno di Persia fare tornare alla gente di Macedonia.
15 "But we find that the Jews, who were consigned to annihilation by this thrice accursed man, are not evildoers but are governed by most righteous laws	15 E non tanto ch' io disaminando il popolo giudaico, loro trovassi degni di morte, anzi gli trovai.degni d'ogni grazia; imperciò ch' erano osservatori della legge (e di tutti i nostri comandamenti),
16 and are sons of the Most High, the most mighty living God, who has directed the kingdom both for us an for our fathers in the most excellent order.	16 e sempre sono stati figliuoli di Dio altissimo vivente, per lo beneficio del quale n'è stato dato questo reame dal tempo degli antichi nostri, ed ecci stato custodito insino al dì d' oggi.
17 "You will therefore do well not to put in execution the letters sent by Haman the son of Hammedatha,	17 E imperciò le lettere, le quali (quello maledetto) Aman mandoe incontro a questo popolo, io le revoco e facciole vane.
18 because the man himself who did these things has been hanged at the gate of Susa, with all his household. For God, who rules over all things, has speedily inflicted on him the punishment he deserved.	18 Ed egli che diede questo consiglio e la sua gente sono dinanzi alla porta di Susa impiccati per la gola, non per nostra operazione, ma per operazione di Dio rendendogli quello che meritava.
19 'Therefore post a copy of this letter publicly in every place, and permit the Jews to live under their own laws.	19 Il comandamento, ch' io ora vi comando, è questo a tutti i Giudei sia lecito osservare la sna legge (senza alcuno impedimento);
20 And give them reinforcements, so that on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, on that very day they may defend themselves against those who attach them at the time of their affliction.	20 e che coloro, i quali erano alla loro morte apparecchiati, che loro ne possano prendere vendetta buona e questo si faccia a' XIII dì del mese di Adar.
21 For God, who rules over all things, has made this day to be a joy to his chosen people instead of a day of destruction for them.	21 E questo giorno hae Iddio a loro dalla tristizia recato in allegrezza.
22 'Therefore you shall observe this with all good cheer as a notable day among your commemorative festivals,	22 E perciò volemo che questo giorno fra l'altre feste sia nominato, e fattone grande solennitade, acciò che in perpetuo si ricordi,
23 so that both now and hereafter it may mean salvation for us and the loyal Persians, but that for those who plot against us it may be a reminder of destruction.	23 che coloro che osservano i comandamenti nostri siano meritati, e che coloro che contra ne fanno siano puniti.
24 "Every city and country, without exception, which does not act accordingly, shall be destroyed in wrath with spear and fire. It shall be made not only impassable for men, but also most hateful for all time to beasts and birds."	24 E tutte quelle provincie, cittadi, (castella o ville) che non volessero questo osservare, di coltello e di fuoco siano puniti (e giudicati); e non tanto che gli uomini muoiano, ma insino alle bestie siano deradicati, acciò che niuno giammai ardisca di prevaricare i comandamenti nostri in perpetuo.
