1 The following is a copy of this letter: "The Great King, Artaxerxes, to the rulers of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, one hundred and twenty-seven satrapies, and to those who are loyal to our government, greeting.	1 Il gran re Artaserse (che domina) dall'India fino all'Etiopia ai governatori, e principi delle cento venti sette provincie, le quali ubbidiscono ai nostri comandi, salute.
2 "The more often they are honored by the too great kindness of their benefactors, the more proud do many men become.	2 Molti hanno abusato della bontà de' prìncipi, e degli onori conferiti ad essi, per insuperbirne:
3 They not only seek to injure our subjects, but in their inability to stand prosperity they even undertake to scheme against their own benefactors.	3 E non solamente tentano di oppri mere i sudditi dei re, ma non essendo capaci di reggere alla gloria data loro, tendono insidie a quegli stessi, da' quali la ricevettero.
4 They not only take away thankfulness from among men, but, carried away by the boasts of those who know nothing of goodness they suppose that they will escape the evil-hating justice of God, who always sees everything.	4 E non si contentano di essere in grati a' benefizj, e di violare in se stessi i diritti dell'umanità; ma presumono eziandìo di poter sottrarsi al giudicio di Dio, che vede il tutto.
5 And often many of those who are set in places of authority have been made in part responsible for the shedding of innocent blood, and have been involved in irremediable calamities, by the persuasion of friends who have been entrusted with the administration of public affairs,	5 E a tanta insania son giunti, che cogli artifizj della menzogna han tentato di rovinare quegli, i quali adempiono con esattezza gli ufficj loro, e si diportano in tal guisa, che delle lodi di tutti son degni,
6 when these men by the false trickery of their evil natures beguile the sincere good will of their sovereigns.	6 Ingannando colle astute fraudi le orecchie de' principi, i quali essendo sinceri, dal proprio lor naturale giudicano degli altri.
7 "What has been wickedly accomplished through the pestilent behavior of those who exercise authority unworthily, can be seen not so much from the more ancient records which we hand on as from investigation of matters close at hand.	7 Della qual cosa le prove si hanno e dalle antiche storie, e da quel, che accade ogni dì si conosce come per le prave suggestioni di taluni si corrompono le buone inclinazioni dei re.
8 For the future we will take care to render our kingdom quiet and peaceable for all men,	8 Per la qual cosa fa d'uopo di provedere alla pace di tutte le provincie.
9 by changing our methods and always judging what comes before our eyes with more equitable consideration.	9 Né dovete credere, che se variano i nostri comandamenti, venga ciò da leggerezza dell'animo nostro, ma che i nostri giudizj sono adattati alla condizione, e alla necessita dei tempi, come porta il bene della Repubblica.
10 For Haman, the son of Hammedatha, a Macedonian (really an alien to the Persian blood, and quite devoid of our kindliness), having become our guest,	10 E affinchè meglio intendiate quello, che diciamo, Aman figliuolo di Amadati Macedone di animo, e di nazione, e alieno dal sangue Persiano, il quale colla sua crudeltà disonorava la pietà nostra, forestiero fu accolto da noi:
11 so far enjoyed the good will that we have for every nation that he was called our father and was continually bowed sown to by all as the person second to the royal throne.	11 E tanta trovò egli in noi umanità, che era chiamato nostro padre, ed era adorato da tutti, secondo dopo il re:
12 But, unable to restrain his arrogance, he undertook to deprive us of our kingdom and our life,	12 Ma egli si gonfiò di tanta arroganza, che tentò di privarci del regno, e della vita.
13 and with intricate craft and deceit asked for destruction of Mordecai, our savior and perpetual benefactor, and of Esther, the blameless partner of our kingdom, together with their whole nation.	13 Imperocché con numi, e inauditi e artifizj perseguitò a morte Mardocheo, dalla fedeltà, e servigj del quale noi riconosciamo la vita, ed Esther, che è a parte del nostro regno, con tutta la loro nazione:
14 He thought that in this way he would find us undefended and would transfer the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians.	14 Avendo in mira, uccisi questi, di tendere insidie a noi derelitti, e di far passare ne' Macedoni il regno de' Persiani.
15 "But we find that the Jews, who were consigned to annihilation by this thrice accursed man, are not evildoers but are governed by most righteous laws	15 Or noi non abhiam trovato, che siano rei di verun fallo i Giudei destinati alla morte dal peggiore degli uomini; ma che pel contrario ei vivono sotto giuste leggi;
16 and are sons of the Most High, the most mighty living God, who has directed the kingdom both for us an for our fathers in the most excellent order.	16 E son figliuoli dell'Altissimo, e massimo, e sempre vivente Iddio, per beneficio di cui a' padri nostri, e a noi fu dato il regno, e sino al giorno d'oggi è conservato.
17 "You will therefore do well not to put in execution the letters sent by Haman the son of Hammedatha,	17 Per la qual cosa sappiate, che mille son quelle lettere, che egli a nome nostro spedì.
18 because the man himself who did these things has been hanged at the gate of Susa, with all his household. For God, who rules over all things, has speedily inflicted on him the punishment he deserved.	18 In pena della quale scelleraggine ed egli che la ordì, e tutta la sua parentela sono stati appesi a' patiboli dinanzi alle porte di questa città di Susa, a lui rendendo non noi, ma Dio quel, che egli ha meritato.
19 'Therefore post a copy of this letter publicly in every place, and permit the Jews to live under their own laws.	19 Or questo editto spedito da noi sia affisso in tutte le città, affinchè sia lecito a' Giudei di seguire le loro leggi.
20 And give them reinforcements, so that on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, on that very day they may defend themselves against those who attach them at the time of their affliction.	20 E voi dovete prestar loro la mano, affinchè a quelli, che si erano accinti a sterminarli possano dar morte il terzodecimo giorno del mese duodecimo detto Adar:
21 For God, who rules over all things, has made this day to be a joy to his chosen people instead of a day of destruction for them.	21 Perocché queso giorno di afflizione, e di duolo, lo ha per essi cangiato Dio onnipotente in giorno di gaudio.
22 'Therefore you shall observe this with all good cheer as a notable day among your commemorative festivals,	22 Onde voi pure tra gli altri di festi vi conterete questo giorno, e lo celebrerete con ogni allegrezza, affinchè ancor ne' futuri tempi si riconosca,
23 so that both now and hereafter it may mean salvation for us and the loyal Persians, but that for those who plot against us it may be a reminder of destruction.	23 Come tutti quelli, che ubbidiscono fedelmente ai Persiani, ricevon degna mercede della loro fede; e quei, che congiurano contro il loro regno, per la loro scelleratezza periscono.
24 "Every city and country, without exception, which does not act accordingly, shall be destroyed in wrath with spear and fire. It shall be made not only impassable for men, but also most hateful for all time to beasts and birds."	24 E qualunque provincia, e ritta, che non vorrà essere a parte di questa solennità, perisca di spada, e col fuo o, e sia sterminata, talmente che non solo agli uomini, ma anche alle bestie sia inaccessibile, in perpetuo esempio ai disprezzatori, e ai disubbidienti.
