Esther 14

1 And Esther the queen, seized with deathly anxiety, fled to the Lord;	1 Anche la regina Ester atterrita per l'imminente pericolo, ricorse al Signore.
2 she took off her splendid apparel and put on the garments of distress and mourning, and instead of costly perfumes she covered her head with ashes and dung, and she utterly humbled her body, and every part that she loved to adorn she covered with her tangled hair.	2 Deposte le vesti reali, prese abiti da lutto e da pianto, invece d'unguenti pose sul capo cenere e sozzure, umiliò coi digiuni il suo corpo, e in tutti i luoghi ove avanti soleva rallegrarsi spargeva i capelli che si strappava.
3 And she prayed to the Lord God of Israel, and said: "O my Lord, thou only art our King; help me, who am alone and have no helper but thee,	3 Essa pregò il Signore Dio d'Israele dicendo: « Signore mio, che sei il solo nostro re, aiutami nel mio abbandono, perchè fuori di te, io non ho altro aiuto,
4 for my danger is in my hand.	4 e la mia rovina è imminente,
5 Ever since I was born I have heard in the tribe of my family that thou, O Lord, didst take Israel out of all the nations, and our fathers from among all their ancestors, for an everlasting inheritance, and that thou didst do for them all that thou didst promise.	5 io ho sentito dire da mio padre che tu, o Signore, separasti Israele da tutte le genti, e i nostri padri da tutti i loro maggiori, per possedere un'eredità eterna, e facesti verso di loro secondo le tue promesse.
6 And now we have sinned before thee, and thou hast given us into the hands of our enemies,	6 Perchè peccammo dinanzi a te, ci consegnasti nelle mani dei nostri nemici,
7 because we glorified their gods. Thou art righteous, O Lord!	7 perché adorammo i loro dèi. Tu sei giusto, o Signore.
8 And now they are not satisfied that we are in bitter slavery, but they have covenanted with their idols	8 Ma ora non basta loro di opprimerci colla più dura schiavitù, or essi, attribuendo alla potenza dei loro idoli la forza del loro braccio,
9 to abolish what thy mouth has ordained and to destroy thy inheritance, to stop the mouths of those who praise thee and to quench thy altar and the glory of thy house,	9 vogliono mutare le tue promesse, sterminare la tua eredità, chiuder la bocca di chi ti loda, estinguere la gloria del tuo tempio e del tuo altare,
10 to open the mouths of the nations for the praise of vain idols, and to magnify for ever a mortal king.	10 per aprire le bocche dei Gentili a lodare la potenza degli idoli, a lodare perpetuamente un re di carne.
11 O Lord, do not surrender thy scepter to what has no being; and do not let them mock at our downfall; but turn their plan against themselves, and make an example of the man who began this against us.	11 Non dare, o Signore, il tuo scettro a quei che non sono, perchè non ridano della nostra rovina; ma volgi contro loro stessi i loro disegni, e disperdi colui che ha cominciato a infierir contro di noi.
12 Remember, O Lord; make thyself known in this time of our affliction, and give me courage, O King of the gods and Master of all dominion!	12 Ricordati di noi, o Signore, e mostrati a noi nel tempo della nostra tribolazione; dammi coraggio, o Signore, re degli dèi e e di tutte le potestà.
13 Put eloquent speech in my mouth before the lion, and turn his heart to hate the man who is fighting against us, so that there may be an end of him and those who agree with him.	13 Metti parole adatte nella mia bocca, al cospetto del leone, e volgi il suo cuore ad odiare il nostro nemico, da farlo perire con tutti quelli che son d'accordo con lui.
14 But save us by thy hand, and help me, who am alone and have no helper but thee, O Lord.	14 Tu poi liberaci colla tua mano, aiuta me che non ho altro aiuto che te, o Signore. Tu, che conosci tutto,
15 Thou hast knowledge of all things; and thou knowest that I hate the splendor of the wicked and abhor the bed of the uncircumcised and of any alien.	15 sai pure com'io odi la gloria degli iniqui, detesti il letto degli incirconcisi e di qualunque straniero.
16 Thou knowest my necessity that I abhor the sign of my proud position, which is upon my head on the days when I appear in public. I abhor it like a menstruous rag, and I do not wear it on the days when I am at leisure.	16 Tu sai la mia necessità, e quanto abbia in abbominio il distintivo della mia grandezza e della mia gloria, che posa sulla mia testa nei giorni in cui devo comparire, e lo detesti come un panno immondo, e non lo porti nei giorni del mio silenzio.
17 And thy servant has not eaten at Haman's table, and I have not honored the king's feast or drunk the wine of the libations.	17 Tu sai com'io non abbia mangiato alla mensa di Aman, non abbia goduto ai conviti del re, non abbia bevuto del vino delle libazioni,
18 Thy servant has had no joy since the day that I was brought here until now, except in thee, O Lord God of Abraham.	18 com'io, tua serva, non mi sia rallegrata, se non in te, o Signore, Dio d'Àbramo, dacché fui qua trasferita fino ad oggi.
19 O God, whose might is over all, hear the voice of the despairing, and save us from the hands of evildoers. And save me from my fear!"	19 O Dio forte sopra tutti, esaudisci la voce di coloro che non hanno altra speranza, liberaci dalla mano degli iniqui e toglimi dal mio timore ».
