1 When Holofernes, the general of the Assyrian army, heard that the people of Israel had prepared for war and had closed the passes in the hills and fortified all the high hilltops and set up barricades in the plains,1 Or on annonça à Holoferne, chef de l'armée des Assyriens, que les fils d'Israël se préparaient à résister, et qu'ils avaient fermé les passages des montagnes.
2 he was very angry. So he called together all the princes of Moab and the commanders of Ammon and all the governors of the coastland,2 Mais je ne sais comment je retirerai cet argent. Cet homme ne me connaît pas, et je ne le connais pas non plus ; quelle preuve lui donnerai-je ? Je n'ai même jamais connu le chemin par où l'on va là-bas.
3 and said to them, "Tell me, you Canaanites, what people is this that lives in the hill country? What cities do they inhabit? How large is their army, and in what does their power or strength consist? Who rules over them as king, leading their army?3 et il leur dit : Dites-moi quel est ce peuple qui occupe les montagnes, quelles sont leurs villes, et quelle est la force et le nombre de ces villes; quelle est aussi leur puissance et leur multitude, et quel est le chef de leur armée;
4 And why have they alone, of all who live in the west, refused to come out and meet me?"4 et pourquoi, entre tous les peuples qui habitent l'Orient, eux seuls nous ont méprisés et ne sont point venus au-devant de nous pour nous recevoir en paix.
5 Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites, said to him, "Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of your servant, and I will tell you the truth about this people that dwells in the nearby mountain district. No falsehood shall come from your servant's mouth.5 Alors Tobie, étant sorti, trouva un beau jeune homme (magnifique) debout, ceint et comme prêt à marcher.
6 This people is descended from the Chaldeans.6 Et ignorant que c'était un ange de Dieu, il le salua, et dit : D'où viens-tu (es-tu), bon jeune homme ?
7 At one time they lived in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers who were in Chaldea.7 Il habita d'abord en Mésopotamie, parce qu'il ne voulait pas suivre les dieux de ses pères qui étaient dans la terre des Chaldéens.
8 For they had left the ways of their ancestors, and they worshiped the God of heaven, the God they had come to know; hence they drove them out from the presence of their gods; and they fled to Mesopotamia, and lived there for a long time.8 Ayant donc abandonné les cérémonies de leurs pères, qui adoraient une multitude de dieux,
9 Then their God commanded them to leave the place where they were living and go to the land of Canaan. There they settled, and prospered, with much gold and silver and very many cattle.9 ils adorèrent un seul Dieu du ciel, qui leur commanda de sortir de ce pays-là et de demeurer à Charan. Et lorsque la famine eut envahi tout le pays, ils descendirent en Egypte, et là, pendant quatre cents ans, ils se multiplièrent de telle sorte, que leur armée était innombrable.
10 When a famine spread over Canaan they went down to Egypt and lived there as long as they had food; and there they became a great multitude-- so great that they could not be counted.10 Alors le roi d'Egypte les opprima et les obligea de bâtir ses villes avec de la terre et des briques, et ils crièrent à leur Dieu, qui frappa de différentes plaies toute la terre d'Egypte.
11 So the king of Egypt became hostile to them; he took advantage of them and set them to making bricks, and humbled them and made slaves of them.11 Les Egyptiens les chassèrent donc de chez eux, et ils se délivrèrent de ces plaies; mais comme ils voulurent les prendre de nouveau et les remettre sous leur esclavage,
12 Then they cried out to their God, and he afflicted the whole land of Egypt with incurable plagues; and so the Egyptians drove them out of their sight.12 le Dieu du ciel leur ouvrit la mer pendant qu'ils fuyaient; et les eaux s'étant affermies de côté et d'autre comme un mur, ils passèrent à pied sec en marchant au fond de la mer.
13 Then God dried up the Red Sea before them,13 Le jeune homme lui dit : Ayez bon courage, le temps approche où Dieu doit vous guérir.
14 and he led them by the way of Sinai and Kadesh-barnea, and drove out all the people of the wilderness.14 Alors Tobie lui dit : Pourras-tu conduire mon fils chez Gabélus à Ragès, ville des Mèdes ? Et quand tu seras de retour, je te donnerai ce qui te sera dû.
15 So they lived in the land of the Amorites, and by their might destroyed all the inhabitants of Heshbon; and crossing over the Jordan they took possession of all the hill country.15 Là les fontaines amères devinrent douces pour les désaltérer, et durant quarante ans ils reçurent leur nourriture du ciel.
16 And they drove out before them the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Jebusites and the Shechemites and all the Gergesites, and lived there a long time.16 Partout où ils entraient, sans arc et sans flèche, sans bouclier et sans épée, leur Dieu combattait pour eux, et Il demeurait vainqueur.
17 As long as they did not sin against their God they prospered, for the God who hates iniquity is with them.17 Nul n'a insulté ce peuple, sinon lorsqu'il s'est retiré du culte du Seigneur son Dieu.
18 But when they departed from the way which he had appointed for them, they were utterly defeated in many battles and were led away captive to a foreign country; the temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their cities were captured by their enemies.18 Car toutes les fois qu'ils ont adoré un autre Dieu que le leur, ils ont été livrés au pillage, et au glaive, et à l'opprobre.
19 But now they have returned to their God, and have come back from the places to which they were scattered, and have occupied Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled in the hill country, because it was uninhabited.19 Et toutes les fois qu'ils se sont repentis d'avoir abandonné le culte de leur Dieu, le Dieu du ciel leur a donné la force de résister.
20 Now therefore, my master and lord, if there is any unwitting error in this people and they sin against their God and we find out their offense, then we will go up and defeat them.20 Enfin ils ont vaincu les rois des Chananéens, des Jébuséens, des Phérézéens, des Héthéens, des Hévéens, des Amorrhéens, et tous les puissants d'Hésébon, et ils possèdent leurs terres et leurs villes.
21 But if there is no transgression in their nation, then let my lord pass them by; for their Lord will defend them, and their God will protect them, and we shall be put to shame before the whole world."21 Et tant qu'ils n'ont point péché contre leur Dieu, ils ont été heureux, car leur Dieu hait l'iniquité.
22 When Achior had finished saying this, all the men standing around the tent began to complain; Holofernes' officers and all the men from the seacoast and from Moab insisted that he must be put to death.22 Aussi, avant ces dernières années, comme ils s'étaient retirés de la voie que leur Dieu leur avait marquée pour y marcher, ils ont été exterminés dans les combats par diverses nations, et beaucoup d'entre eux ont été emmenés captifs dans une terre étrangère.
23 "For," they said, "we will not be afraid of the Israelites; they are a people with no strength or power for making war.23 Et lorsqu'ils furent partis, sa mère commença à pleurer et à dire : Tu nous as ôté le bâton de notre vieillesse, et tu l'as éloigné de nous.
24 Therefore let us go up, Lord Holofernes, and they will be devoured by your vast army."24 Plût à Dieu que cet argent, pour lequel tu l'as envoyé, n'eût jamais existé !
25 Car notre pauvreté nous suffisait, et nous pouvions regarder comme une grande richesse de voir notre fils.
26 Or il arriva que lorsqu'Achior eut achevé de parler, tous les grands d'Holoferne furent irrités, et ils songeaient à le tuer, se disant l'un à l'autre:
27 Car je crois que le (qu'un) bon ange de Dieu l'accompagne, et qu'il dispose bien tout ce qui le concerne, et qu'ainsi il reviendra vers nous avec joie.
28 Afin donc qu'Achior sache qu'il nous trompe, gravissons ces montagnes, et lorsque nous aurons pris les plus forts d'entre eux, alors avec eux il sera transpercé du glaive,
29 afin que toutes les nations sachent que Nabuchodonosor est le dieu de la terre, et qu'il n'y en a point d'autre que lui.
