1 When Holofernes, the general of the Assyrian army, heard that the people of Israel had prepared for war and had closed the passes in the hills and fortified all the high hilltops and set up barricades in the plains,	1 E fu riferito ad Oloferne capitano dell'esercito degli Assiri, come i figliuoli d'Israele si preparavano a far difesa, e come avean chiusi i passi delle montagne:
2 he was very angry. So he called together all the princes of Moab and the commanders of Ammon and all the governors of the coastland,	2 E arse di sdegno, e di furore, e chiamò a se tutti i principi di Moab, e i capi degli Ammoniti,
3 and said to them, "Tell me, you Canaanites, what people is this that lives in the hill country? What cities do they inhabit? How large is their army, and in what does their power or strength consist? Who rules over them as king, leading their army?	3 E disse loro: Ditemi qual popolo sia questo, che a asserragliate le montagne, e quali, e come grandi sieno le loro città: e anche qualsiasi il loro valore, e se sieno in gran numero, e chi governi le loro milizie:
4 And why have they alone, of all who live in the west, refused to come out and meet me?"	4 E per qual motivo tra tutti quelli che abitano verso l'oriente, costoro non hanno fatto conto di noi, e non ci sono venuti ad incontrare per accoglierci come amici?
5 Then Achior, the leader of all the Ammonites, said to him, "Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of your servant, and I will tell you the truth about this people that dwells in the nearby mountain district. No falsehood shall come from your servant's mouth.	5 Allora Achior capo di tutti i figliuoli di Ammon riespose, e disse: Se tu ti degnerai di ascoltarmi, io dirò, signore mio, la verità dinanzi a te riguardo a questo popolo, che abita nelle montagne, e non uscirà dalla mia bocca parola di falsità.
6 This people is descended from the Chaldeans.	6 Questo popolo è di stirpe Caldea:
7 At one time they lived in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers who were in Chaldea.	7 Egli abitò dapprima nella Mesopotamia, perchè non vollero seguire gli dei de padri loro, i quali dimoravano nella terra de' Caldei.
8 For they had left the ways of their ancestors, and they worshiped the God of heaven, the God they had come to know; hence they drove them out from the presence of their gods; and they fled to Mesopotamia, and lived there for a long time.	8 Or eglino, abbandonate le cerimonie de' padri loro, i quali aveano molti dei,
9 Then their God commanded them to leave the place where they were living and go to the land of Canaan. There they settled, and prospered, with much gold and silver and very many cattle.	9 Adorarono il solo Dio del cielo, il quale eziandio ordinò loro di partirsi di colà, e di abitare in Charan: ed essendo il paese invaso dalla fame, scesero in Egitto: e ivi nello spazio di quattro cent'anni moltiplicarono in tal guisa, che diventarono un esercito innumerabile.
10 When a famine spread over Canaan they went down to Egypt and lived there as long as they had food; and there they became a great multitude-- so great that they could not be counted.	10 Ed essendo angariati dal re d'Egitto, il quale li domava nelle fabbriche delle fue città, a impastare la terra, e far de mattoni, alzaron le strida verso il loro Signore, il quale percosse con flagelli diversi tutta la terra d'Egitto.
11 So the king of Egypt became hostile to them; he took advantage of them and set them to making bricks, and humbled them and made slaves of them.	11 E avendoli gli Egiziani discacciati da se, ed essendo cessati i flagelli e volendo di nuovo riprendergli, e ridurli di nuovo sotto il loro giogo,
12 Then they cried out to their God, and he afflicted the whole land of Egypt with incurable plagues; and so the Egyptians drove them out of their sight.	12 Fuggendo questi, il Dio del cielo aperse ad essi il mare, talmente che da un lato, e dall'altro si rappreser le acque come muraglia, e questi a piè asciutto passarono per mezzo al fondo del mare.
13 Then God dried up the Red Sea before them,	13 E inseguendoli per la stessa via un esercito innumerabile di Egiziani, fu talmente ricoperto dalle acque, che neppur uno rimase, che raccontasse ai posteri l'avvenimento.
14 and he led them by the way of Sinai and Kadesh-barnea, and drove out all the people of the wilderness.	14 E quegli usciti dal mare Rosso occuparono i deferti del monte Sina, dove uomo non potè mai abitare, ne figliuolo d'uomo posarsi.
15 So they lived in the land of the Amorites, and by their might destroyed all the inhabitants of Heshbon; and crossing over the Jordan they took possession of all the hill country.	15 Ivi le amare fontane divenner dolci per essi perchè avessero da bere; e per quarant'anni ebbero il vitto dal cielo.
16 And they drove out before them the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Jebusites and the Shechemites and all the Gergesites, and lived there a long time.	16 Dovunque posero il piede senz'arco, nè freccia, e senza scudo, nè spada, il loro Dio per essi pugnò, e vinse.
17 As long as they did not sin against their God they prospered, for the God who hates iniquity is with them.	17 E non v'ebbe chi potesse far male a questo popolo, se non quand'egli abbandonò il culto del Signore Dio suo.
18 But when they departed from the way which he had appointed for them, they were utterly defeated in many battles and were led away captive to a foreign country; the temple of their God was razed to the ground, and their cities were captured by their enemies.	18 Ma tutte le volte, che altro Dio onorarono fuori del loro Dio, furono abbandonati alle rapine, e alle uccisioni, e alle ignominie.
19 But now they have returned to their God, and have come back from the places to which they were scattered, and have occupied Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and have settled in the hill country, because it was uninhabited.	19 E ogni volta che fecero penitenza per avere tralasciato il culto del loro Dio, diede loro il Dio del cielo valore per difendersi.
20 Now therefore, my master and lord, if there is any unwitting error in this people and they sin against their God and we find out their offense, then we will go up and defeat them.	20 E alla fine debellarono i re Cananei, e gli Jebusei, e i Ferezei, e gli Hethei, e gli Hevei, e gli Amorrhei, e tutti i potentati di Hesebon, e s'impadronirono delle loro terre, e delle loro città:
21 But if there is no transgression in their nation, then let my lord pass them by; for their Lord will defend them, and their God will protect them, and we shall be put to shame before the whole world."	21 E sino a tanto che non peccarono nel cospetto del loro Dio, ebbero felicità; perrocchè il loro Dio ha in odio l'iniquità.
22 When Achior had finished saying this, all the men standing around the tent began to complain; Holofernes' officers and all the men from the seacoast and from Moab insisted that he must be put to death.	22 Conciossiache anche anni sono, perchè abbandonarono la via insegnata loro da Dio affinchè la seguitassero, furono disfatti in battaglia da molte genti, e moltissimi di essi furon menati schiavi lungi dal loro paese.
23 "For," they said, "we will not be afraid of the Israelites; they are a people with no strength or power for making war.	23 Ma ultimamente convertitisi al Signore Dio loro, da' luoghi, overan dispersi, son ritornati in corpo, e son venuti su tutti questi monti, e sono nuovamente padroni di Gerusalemme, dov'è il loro santuario.
24 Therefore let us go up, Lord Holofernes, and they will be devoured by your vast army."	24 Adesso adunque, signor mio procura di sapere, se eglino son rei di qualche peccato dinanzi al loro Dio; e andiam contro di essi; perocchè il loro Dio li darà nelle tue mani, e saran soggettati al giogo di tua possanza.
	25 Ma se questo popolo non ha offeso il suo Dio, noi non potremo resistergli; perchè il Dio loro li difenderà, e noi saremo lo scherno di tutta la terra.
	26 Or finito che ebbe Achior di dir tali cose, tutti i grandi dell'esercito di Oloferne sdegnati pensavan di ucciderlo, e dicevano l'uno all'altro:
	27 Chi è costui, che dice, che posson far fronte al re Nabuchodonosor, e a suoi eserciti i figliuoli d'Israele, uomini disarmati, e senza valore, e senza perizia dell'arte della guerra?
	28 Or affinchè Achior vegga com'egli c'inganna, andiam sopra que' monti, e quando avremo fatti prigionieri i più forti di quella gente, allora egli sarà trucidato insieme con essi:
	29 Affinchè sappian tutte le genti, come Nabuchodonosor è il Dio della terra, e altro non havvenne, fuori di lui.
