1 So they sent messengers to sue for peace, and said,	1 Allora i re e i principi di tutte le città e di tutte le provincie, cioè della Siria di Mesopotamia, della Siria di Sobal, della Libia, e della Cilicia, mandarono i loro ambasciatori, i quali, giunti davanti a Oloferne, dissero:
2 "Behold, we the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, the Great King, lie prostrate before you. Do with us whatever you will.	2 « Cessi il tuo sdegno contro di noi, chè per noi è meglio vivere servi di Nabucodonosor e a te soggetti, che morirti sterminati dopo aver sofferti i mali della schiavitù.
3 Behold, our buildings, and all our land, and all our wheat fields, and our flocks and herds, and all our sheepfolds with their tents, lie before you; do with them whatever you please.	3 Tutte le nostre città, tutti i nostri possessi, tutti i monti, i colli, i campi, gli armenti dei buoi, i branchi delle pecore e delle capre, i cavalli, i cammelli e tutte le nostre facoltà e le nostre famiglie son a tua disposizione.
4 Our cities also and their inhabitants are your slaves; come and deal with them in any way that seems good to you."	4 Tutto ciò che è nostro sia sotto la tua legge;
5 The men came to Holofernes and told him all this.	5 noi e i nostri figli siamo tuoi servi;
6 Then he went down to the seacoast with his army and stationed garrisons in the hilltop cities and took picked men from them as his allies.	6 vieni a noi come pacifico signore, e disponi come ti piacerà dei nostri servizi ».
7 And these people and all in the country round about welcomed him with garlands and dances and tambourines.	7 Ma (Oloferne), disceso dai monti colla cavalleria e con grandi forze, s'impadronì di tutte le città e di tutti gli abitanti della terra,
8 And he demolished all their shrines and cut down their sacred groves; for it had been given to him to destroy all the gods of the land, so that all nations should worship Nebuchadnezzar only, and all their tongues and tribes should call upon him as god.	8 e da tutte quelle città prese come ausiliari gli uomini robusti e scelti per la guerra.
9 Then he came to the edge of Esdraelon, near Dothan, fronting the great ridge of Judea;	9 Fu tanto lo spavento che invase quelle provincie, che i principali di tutte le città e le persone più distinte insieme ai popoli gli andavano incontro,
10 here he camped between Geba and Scythopolis, and remained for a whole month in order to assemble all the supplies for his army.	10 e lo ricevevano con corone e torce danzando al suono di timpani e di trombe.
	11 Però, per quanto facessero, non riuscirono ad ammansire la ferocia di quel cuore;
	12 distrusse le loro città, abbattè i loro boschetti sacri;
	13 perchè il re Nabucodonosor aveva ordinato di sterminare tutti gli dèi della terra, per esser chiamato lui solo dio delle nazioni soggiogate dal valore di Oloferne.
	14 Questi, percorsa la Siria di Sobal e tutta l'Apamea e tutta la Mesopotamia, giunse dagli Idumei nella terra di Gabaa,
	15 e, prese le loro città, vi si fermò trenta giorni, durante i quali fece riunire tutte le truppe della sua armata.
