Nehemiah 13

1 On that day they read from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God;	1 En ce temps-là, on lut au peuple dans le livre de Moïse et l'on y trouva écrit: "L'Ammonite et leMoabite ne seront pas admis à l'assemblée de Dieu, et cela pour toujours,
2 for they did not meet the children of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them-- yet our God turned the curse into a blessing.	2 car ils ne sont pas venus à la rencontre des Israélites avec le pain et l'eau. Ils soudoyèrent contreeux Balaam, pour les maudire, mais notre Dieu changea la malédiction en bénédiction."
3 When the people heard the law, they separated from Israel all those of foreign descent.	3 Dès qu'on eut entendu la Loi, on exclut d'Israël tout élément étranger.
4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was connected with Tobiah,	4 Mais auparavant, le prêtre Elyashib avait été préposé aux salles du Temple de notre Dieu. Lié àTobiyya,
5 prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the cereal offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.	5 il lui avait aménagé une salle spacieuse, où l'on plaçait précédemment les offrandes, l'encens, lesustensiles, la dîme du blé, du vin et de l'huile, c'est-à-dire les parts des lévites, des chantres et des portiers et cequ'on prélevait pour les prêtres.
6 While this was taking place I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king	6 J'étais, durant tout cela, absent de Jérusalem, car dans la trente-deuxième année d'Artaxerxès, roide Babylone, j'étais parti auprès du roi; mais, au bout d'un certain temps, je demandai au roi un congé
7 and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.	7 et revins à Jérusalem. J'appris alors la mauvaise action qu'avait faite Elyashib en faveur deTobiyya, en lui aménageant une salle dans le parvis du Temple de Dieu.
8 And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber.	8 Cela me déplut fort: je jetai donc à la rue, hors de la salle, tout le mobilier de Tobiyya,
9 Then I gave orders and they cleansed the chambers; and I brought back thither the vessels of the house of God, with the cereal offering and the frankincense.	9 et j'ordonnai qu'on purifiât les salles; puis j'y fis réintégrer les ustensiles du Temple de Dieu, lesoffrandes et l'encens.
10 I also found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them; so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field.	10 J'appris également que les parts des lévites ne rentraient plus et que les lévites et les chantreschargés du service s'étaient enfuis chacun vers son champ.
11 So I remonstrated with the officials and said, "Why is the house of God forsaken?" And I gathered them together and set them in their stations.	11 Aussi tançai-je les magistrats en ces termes: "Pourquoi le Temple de Dieu est-il à l'abandon?" Jeles rassemblai donc et les rétablis dans leur fonction.
12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses.	12 Alors tout Juda apporta aux magasins la dîme du blé, du vin et de l'huile.
13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were counted faithful; and their duty was to distribute to their brethren.	13 Je préposai aux magasins le prêtre Shélémya, le scribe Sadoq, Pedaya, l'un des lévites, et, pourles assister, Hanân, fils de Zakkur, fils de Mattanya, car ils passaient pour intègres; leur office fut de faire lesdistributions à leurs frères.
14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service.	14 Pour cela, souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu: n'efface pas les actes de piété que j'ai accomplis pourle Temple de mon Dieu et ses observances.
15 In those days I saw in Judah men treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on asses; and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day; and I warned them on the day when they sold food.	15 En ces jours-là, je vis en Juda des gens qui foulaient au pressoir, le jour du sabbat; d'autresapportaient des gerbes de blé, les chargeaient sur des ânes, avec du vin, des raisins, des figues et toutes sortes defardeaux, qu'ils voulaient introduire à Jérusalem le jour du sabbat: je les avertis de ne point vendre de denrées.
16 Men of Tyre also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of wares and sold them on the sabbath to the people of Judah, and in Jerusalem.	16 A Jérusalem même, des Tyriens, qui habitaient là, apportaient du poisson et des marchandisesde tout genre pour les vendre aux Judéens le jour du sabbat.
17 Then I remonstrated with the nobles of Judah and said to them, "What is this evil thing which you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?	17 Aussi tançai-je les grands de Juda, leur déclarant: "Quelle chose exécrable vous faites là, enprofanant le jour du sabbat!
18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this evil on us and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath."	18 N'est-ce pas ainsi qu'ont agi vos pères? Alors notre Dieu fit venir tout ce malheur sur nous et surcette ville. Et vous, vous accroissez la Colère contre Israël en profanant le sabbat."
19 When it began to be dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the sabbath. And I set some of my servants over the gates, that no burden might be brought in on the sabbath day.	19 Aussi, dès que l'ombre eut gagné les portes de Jérusalem, juste avant le sabbat, j'ordonnai lafermeture des battants et je dis qu'on ne les rouvre qu'après le sabbat. Je postai quelques-uns de mes gens auxportes pour qu'aucun fardeau n'entrât le jour du sabbat.
20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice.	20 Une fois ou deux, des marchands, des trafiquants en tous genres de marchandises passèrent lanuit hors de Jérusalem,
21 But I warned them and said to them, "Why do you lodge before the wall? If you do so again I will lay hands on you." From that time on they did not come on the sabbath.	21 mais je les avertis, leur déclarant: "Pourquoi passer la nuit aux abords du mur? Si vousrecommencez, je mettrai la main sur vous!" Depuis ce moment, ils ne sont plus venus le jour du sabbat.
22 And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of thy steadfast love.	22 J'ordonnai aux lévites de se purifier et de venir surveiller les portes, pour qu'on observâtsaintement le jour du sabbat. Pour cela aussi souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu, et prends-moi en pitié, selon tagrande miséricorde!
23 In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab;	23 En ces jours-là encore, je vis des Juifs qui avaient épousé des femmes Ashdodites, ammonitesou moabites.
24 and half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but the language of each people.	24 Quant à leurs enfants, la moitié parlait l'Ashdodien ou la langue de tel ou tel peuple, mais nesavait plus parler le juif.
25 And I contended with them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair; and I made them take oath in the name of God, saying, "You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.	25 Je les tançai et les maudis, en frappai plusieurs, leur arrachai les cheveux et les adjurai de parDieu: "Vous ne devez pas donner vos filles à leurs fils, ni prendre pour femmes aucune de leurs filles, pour vosfils ou pour vous-mêmes!
26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless foreign women made even him to sin.	26 N'est-ce pas en cela qu'a péché Salomon, roi d'Israël? Parmi tant de nations, aucun roi ne lui futsemblable; il était aimé de son Dieu; Dieu l'avait fait roi sur tout Israël. Même lui, les femmes étrangèresl'entraînèrent à pécher!
27 Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?"	27 Faudra-t-il entendre dire que vous commettez aussi ce grand crime: trahir notre Dieu en vousmariant avec des femmes étrangères?"
28 And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I chased him from me.	28 L'un des fils de Yoyada, fils d'Elyashib, le grand prêtre, était le gendre de Sânballat, le Horonite.Je le chassai loin de moi.
29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.	29 Souviens-toi de ces gens, mon Dieu, pour l'avilissement causé au sacerdoce et à l'alliance desprêtres et lévites.
30 Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work;	30 Je les purifiai donc de tout élément étranger. J'établis, pour les prêtres et les lévites, lesrèglements qui délimitaient à chacun sa tâche.
31 and I provided for the wood offering, at appointed times, and for the first fruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.	31 J'en établis également pour les livraisons du bois à dates fixées, et pour les prémices. Souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu, pour mon bonheur!
