1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.	1 Or les Philistins combattaient contre Israël, et les Israélites furent mis en fuite par les Philistins (Palestiniens, note), et tombèrent blessés sur le mont Gelboé.
2 And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.	2 Et lorsque les Philistins, poursuivant Saül et ses fils, se furent approchés, ils frappèrent Jonathas, Abinadab et Melchisua, fils de Saül.
3 The battle pressed hard upon Saul, and the archers found him; and he was wounded by the archers.	3 Et tout l'effort du combat tomba sur Saül, et les archers le trouvèrent et le percèrent (blessèrent) de leurs flèches (traits).
4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and make sport of me." But his armor-bearer would not; for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword, and fell upon it.	4 Saül dit alors à son écuyer : Tire ton épée et tue-moi, de peur que ces incirconcis ne viennent et ne me déshonorent. Mais l'écuyer, saisi de crainte, refusa de le faire. Saül prit donc lui-même son épée, et se jeta dessus.
5 And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword, and died.	5 Lorsque l'écuyer eut vu que Saül était mort, il se jeta aussi lui-même sur son épée, et il mourut.
6 Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together.	6 Telle fut la mort de Saül et de ses trois fils, et toute sa maison tomba avec lui.
7 And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.	7 Les Israélites qui habitaient la campagne, ayant vu cela, s'enfuirent, et comme Saül était mort aussi bien que ses fils, ils abandonnèrent leurs villes, se dispersant de tous côtés ; et les Philistins vinrent et s'y établirent.
8 On the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.	8 Le lendemain, les Philistins, dépouillant les morts, trouvèrent Saül et ses fils étendus sur la montagne de Gelboé.
9 And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to their idols and to the people.	9 Et après l'avoir dépouillé, ils lui coupèrent la tête, prirent ses armes et les envoyèrent dans leur pays, pour les faire porter de tous côtés et les montrer dans les temples des idoles et aux peuples.
10 And they put his armor in the temple of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.	10 (Mais) Ils consacrèrent ses armes dans le temple de leur dieu, et attachèrent sa tête dans le temple de Dagon.
11 But when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,	11 Quand les habitants de Jabès-Galaad eurent appris le traitement que les Philistins avaient infligé à Saül,
12 all the valiant men arose, and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.	12 les plus courageux d'entre eux (tous ceux qui étaient forts) se levèrent, prirent les corps de Saül et de ses fils, et les apportèrent à Jabès. Ils enterrèrent leurs os sous le chêne qui était à Jabès, et jeûnèrent pendant sept jours.
13 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness; he was unfaithful to the LORD in that he did not keep the command of the LORD, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance,	13 Saül mourut donc à cause de ses iniquités ; parce qu'au lieu de garder le commandement que le Seigneur lui avait fait, il l'avait violé, et, en outre, parce qu'il avait consulté une (la) pythonisse,
14 and did not seek guidance from the LORD. Therefore the LORD slew him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.	14 et qu'il n'avait point mis son espérance au (dans le) Seigneur. C'est pour cela que Dieu le fit mourir, et qu'il transféra son royaume à David fils d'Isaï.
