1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word."	1 - Elia Tesbite, uno degli abitanti di Galaad, disse ad Acab: «Viva il Signore, Dio d'Israele al cui cospetto io sto! Non vi sarà in tutti questi anni nè rugiada nè pioggia, se non quando io lo dirò».
2 And the word of the LORD came to him,	2 Poi la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Elia in questi termini:
3 "Depart from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is east of the Jordan.	3 «Pàrtiti di qua e va' verso oriente per nasconderti nel torrente Carit, che sta in faccia al Giordano;
4 You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there."	4 quivi berrai l'acqua del torrente e io ho comandato ai corvi che ti dian quivi da mangiare».
5 So he went and did according to the word of the LORD; he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan.	5 Partì dunque e fece secondo la parola del Signore; andò e si stabilì presso il torrente Carit, che sta contro il Giordano.
6 And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.	6 E i corvi gli portavano il pane e la carne ogni mattina; parimenti pane e carne la sera; egli poi beveva al torrente.
7 And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.	7 Dopo vari giorni però il torrente si seccò, poichè non era caduta pioggia nel paese.
8 Then the word of the LORD came to him,	8 Allora la parola del Signore gli si fece intendere dicendo:
9 "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you."	9 «Levati e va' a Sarefta dei Sidoni e restavi, poichè ho comandato ad una donna di là che ti dia da mangiare».
10 So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks; and he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink."	10 Si levò e andò a Sarefta. Giunto alla porta della città vide una donna vedova in atto di raccoglier legna, e chiamatala le disse: «Dammi un po' d'acqua da bere entro un vaso».
11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand."	11 Mentre essa andava per portargliene, le gridò dicendo: «Portami anche, te ne prego, un tozzo di pane, nella tua mano».
12 And she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a cruse; and now, I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die."	12 Ed ella rispose: «Viva il Signore Dio tuo! io non ho pane, non ho che un po' di farina in un vaso, tanta quanta può stare in un pugno e un po' di olio in un'ampolla. Ed eccomi qui a raccogliere due pezzi di legna per poi tornare a casa a prepararla per me e il figliuolo mio per mangiarne e poi morire».
13 And Elijah said to her, "Fear not; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make for yourself and your son.	13 Elia le soggiunse: «Non temere, ma va' e fa' come hai detto; tuttavia prima di tutto preparami con quel po' di farina un piccolo pane, sotto la cenere, e portamelo; poi ne farai per te e per il figliuol tuo;
14 For thus says the LORD the God of Israel, 'The jar of meal shall not be spent, and the cruse of oil shall not fail, until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the earth.'"	14 poichè il Signore Dio di Israele dice così: - Il vaso della farina non si esaurirà nè l'ampolla mancherà di olio fino al giorno in cui il Signore manderà la pioggia sulla faccia della terra -».
15 And she went and did as Elijah said; and she, and he, and her household ate for many days.	15 Essa andò e fece come aveva detto Elia e mangiò egli ed essa e la sua casa; e da quel giorno
16 The jar of meal was not spent, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD which he spoke by Elijah.	16 il vaso della farina non si esaurì, e nell'ampolla non diminuì mai l'olio, secondo la parola del Signore, che avea parlato per mezzo di Elia profeta.
17 After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill; and his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.	17 Avvenne poi dopo questi fatti che si ammalò il figlio della donna, padrona di casa, e la malattia era così forte che non restava più in lui respiro.
18 And she said to Elijah, "What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!"	18 Disse perciò la donna ad Elia: «Che vi ha tra te e me, o uomo di Dio? Sei tu venuto da me per richiamarmi il ricordo delle mie iniquità e per farmi morire il figliuol mio?».
19 And he said to her, "Give me your son." And he took him from her bosom, and carried him up into the upper chamber, where he lodged, and laid him upon his own bed.	19 Le disse Elia: «Dammi il tuo figlio». Lo prese quindi dal seno di lei, se lo portò nella camera dove stava, lo pose sul letto,
20 And he cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, hast thou brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?"	20 e invocando il Signore, disse: «Signore Dio mio, hai tu dunque afflitto anche questa vedova, presso la quale in qualche modo sono sostentato, facendole morire il figliuol suo?».
21 Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this child's soul come into him again."	21 E si distese e si misurò sopra il fanciullo, per tre volte successive, gridando al Signore, e dicendo: «Signore Dio mio, deh, fa' che torni l'anima di questo fanciullo nelle sue viscere».
22 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.	22 Ed il Signore esaudì la voce di Elia e l'anima del fanciullo ritornò in lui ed egli rivisse.
23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Elijah said, "See, your son lives."	23 Elia allora preso il fanciullo, lo portò dalla camera sua al piano inferiore e lo consegnò alla sua madre dicendole: «Guarda, il tuo figlio è vivo!»;
24 And the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth."	24 e la donna disse ad Elia: «Ora da questo conosco che sei uomo di Dio, e che la parola del Signore, che è sulle tue labbra, è verità».
