1 Then David mustered the men who were with him, and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.	1 Davidde adunque, fatta la rassegna della sua gente, elesse tribuni, e centurioni, che la comandassero.
2 And David sent forth the army, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the men, "I myself will also go out with you."	2 E diede il comando di un terzo de' soldati a Gioab e di un terzo ad Abisai figliuolo di Sarvia fratello di Gioab, e dell'altro terzo ad Ethai che era di Geth: e il re disse a' suoi: Verrò io pure con voi.
3 But the men said, "You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore it is better that you send us help from the city."	3 E quelli risposero: Tu non dei venire: perocché quando noi fossimo messi in fuga, non sarà per quelli un gran vantaggio; e quando perisse la metà di noi quelli non faranno gran caso: perocché tu solo conti per dieci mila. È meglio adunque che tu ci dia ajuto dalla città.
4 The king said to them, "Whatever seems best to you I will do." So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands.	4 Disse loro il re: Io farò quello che voi credete opportuno. II re adunque fermossi alla porta; e i soldali uscivano a schiere di cento, e di mille uomini.
5 And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom.	5 E diede il re quest'ordine a Gioab, ad Abisai, ad Ethai, e disse: Salvatemi il figliuolo Assalonne. E tutto il popolo udì, come il re raccomandava Assalonne a tutti i capi.
6 So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.	6 Uscì pertanto in campagna l’esercito contro Israele, e seguì la battaglia nel bosco di Ephraim:
7 And the men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men.	7 E ivi il popolo d'Israele fu sconfitto dall'esercito di Davidde, e grande strage fu in quel giorno di venti mila uomini.
8 The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword.	8 E i combattenti si azzuffarono rottamente chi qua, chi là per tutto quel tratto, e molti più furono quelli del popolo, che in fuggendo periron pel bosco, che quelli che furon trucidati dalla spada in quel giorno:
9 And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on.	9 Or egli avvenne, che s'imbattè nei soldati di David Assalonne, che cavalcava un mulo: e il mulo venendo a passare sotto una quercia grande, e molto fronzuta, il capo di lui rimase appiccato alla quercia; e restando egli appeso tra cielo e terra, il mulo che ei cavalcava, tirò avanti.
10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, "Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak."	10 E vi fu, chi l'osservò, e ne diede parte a Gioab, dicendo: Ho veduto Assalonne appeso ad una quercia.
11 Joab said to the man who told him, "What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a girdle."	11 E Gioab disse a colui, che gli dava tal nuova: Se l'hai veduto, perchè non lo hai tu conficcato in terra, e io ti avrei dato dieci sicli di argento, e una bandoliera?
12 But the man said to Joab, "Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake protect the young man Absalom.'	12 E quegli rispose a Gioab: Quando mi avessi messo in mano mille monete d'argento, non avrei stesa la mano contro il figliuolo del re: mentre udimmo ben noi come il re ordinò, e disse a te, ad Abisai, e ad Ethai: Conservatemi il figliuolo Assalonne.
13 On the other hand, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof."	13 E se io avessi ardito di tradire l’anima mia, non avrebbe potuto restare ascosa al re simil cosa; e mi avresti tu forse difeso?
14 Joab said, "I will not waste time like this with you." And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive in the oak.	14 Ma Gioab disse: Non sarà come vuoi tu: anzi io lo trafiggerò in tua presenza. Prese egli adunque in mano tre dardi, e gl’immerse nel petto di Assalonne: e mentre quegli appiccato alla quercia tuttor palpitava,
15 And ten young men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him, and killed him.	15 Corsero dieci giovani scudieri di Gioab, e co' loro colpi lo finirono.
16 Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel; for Joab restrained them.	16 E Gioab fece suonare la sua tromba, e contenne il popolo dall’inseguire i fuggitivi, risparmiar volendo la moltitudine.
17 And they took Absalom, and threw him into a great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones; and all Israel fled every one to his own home.	17 E presero Assalonne, e lo gettarono nel bosco in una buca grande; e lo gettarono nel bosco in una buca grande; e gettaron sopra di lui una massa altissima di pietre: e tutto Israele se ne fuggì alle sue tende.
18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar which is in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to keep my name in remembrance"; he called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom's monument to this day.	18 Or Assalonne si era eretto, mentre era in vita, un monumento nella valle del re: perocché diceva: Io non ho un figliuolo: lascerò questa memoria del nome mio. E diede a quel monumento il suo nome, e si chiama fino al dì d'oggi la Mano di Assalonne.
19 Then said Ahima-az the son of Zadok, "Let me run, and carry tidings to the king that the LORD has delivered him from the power of his enemies."	19 Or Achimaas figliuolo di Sadoc disse: Correrò a recare a Davidde la nuova, come il Signore ha fatta a lui giustizia contro i suoi nemici.
20 And Joab said to him, "You are not to carry tidings today; you may carry tidings another day, but today you shall carry no tidings, because the king's son is dead."	20 Ma Gioab disse a lui: Non porterai le nuove oggi, ma un'altra volta: oggi non voglio, che porti le nuove tu, perchè il figliuolo del re è morto.
21 Then Joab said to the Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed before Joab, and ran.	21 E disse Gioab a Chusi: Va, e riferisci al re quello che hai veduto. Chusi s'inchinò a Gioab, e corse via.
22 Then Ahima-az the son of Zadok said again to Joab, "Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite." And Joab said, "Why will you run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the tidings?"	22 Ma Achimaas figliuolo di Sadoc disse dipoi a Gioab: Che mal sarà egli, se io pure correrò dietro a Chusi? E Gioab gli disse: Perchè vuoi tu, figliuol mio, far questa corsa? tu non saresti apportatore di grata novella.
23 "Come what may," he said, "I will run." So he said to him, "Run." Then Ahima-az ran by the way of the plain, and outran the Cushite.	23 E quegli rispose: E se io facessi questa corsa? E Gioab gli disse: Corri. Allora Achimaas, presa una scorciatoja, trapassò Chusi.
24 Now David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and when he lifted up his eyes and looked, he saw a man running alone.	24 Or Davidde stava sedendo tra le due porte: e una sentinella, che stava in cima alla porta sulla muraglia, alzati gli occhi, vide un uomo solo che correva;
25 And the watchman called out and told the king. And the king said, "If he is alone, there are tidings in his mouth." And he came apace, and drew near.	25 E alzò la voce per dirlo al re, e il re disse: Se egli è solo, reca buona novella: ma quegli venendo in tutta fretta, e avvicinandosi di più,
26 And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gate and said, "See, another man running alone!" The king said, "He also brings tidings."	26 La sentinella vide un altr'uomo, che correva, e gridando da alto disse: Comparisce un altr'uomo, che corre, ed è solo. E il re disse: Anche questo porta buone nuove.
27 And the watchman said, "I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahima-az the son of Zadok." And the king said, "He is a good man, and comes with good tidings."	27 E la sentinella disse: Se bado alla maniera di correre del primo, mi sembra ch'ei sia Achimaas figliuolo di Sadoc. E il re disse: Egli è uomo dabbene, e viene a portare buone nuove.
28 Then Ahima-az cried out to the king, "All is well." And he bowed before the king with his face to the earth, and said, "Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who raised their hand against my lord the king."	28 E Achimaas gridò, e disse al re: Dio ti salvi, o re: e prostratosi per terra dinanzi a lui, lo adorò e disse: Benedetto il Signore Dio tuo, il quale ha messi alle strette coloro, che alzaron le mani contro il re mio signore.
29 And the king said, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" Ahima-az answered, "When Joab sent your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I do not know what it was."	29 E disse il re: È egli salvo il figliuolo Assalonne? E Achimaas disse: Io vidi un grande scompiglio quando Gioab tuo servo, o re, spediva me tuo servo: altra cosa io non so.
30 And the king said, "Turn aside, and stand here." So he turned aside, and stood still.	30 E il re a lui: Avanzati, e posati qui. E quando quegli si fu avanzato al suo posto,
31 And behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, "Good tidings for my lord the king! For the LORD has delivered you this day from the power of all who rose up against you."	31 Comparve Chusi, e in arrivando disse: Buone nuove io ti porto, o re mio signore: perocché oggi il Signore ha sentenziato in tuo favore liberandoti dalle mani di quelli che si son ribellati.
32 The king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" And the Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil, be like that young man."	32 Ma il re disse a Chusi: È egli salvo il figliuolo Assalonne? Rispose a lui Chusi: Sia come di quel figliuolo, così di tutti i nemici del re mio signore, e di tutti quelli che si ribellano contro di lui per nuocergli.
33 And the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!"	33 Allora il re pieno di dolore salì alla camera, che era sopra la porta, e pianse, e nell’andare diceva: Assalonne figliuol mio, Assalonne figliuol mio! Chi mi concederà, che io muoja per te, Assalonne figliuol mio, figliuol mio Assalonne?
