1 Then David mustered the men who were with him, and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.	1 Davide passò in rassegna la sua gente e costituì capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia per comandarla.
2 And David sent forth the army, one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the men, "I myself will also go out with you."	2 Divise la gente in tre corpi: un terzo sotto il comando di Ioab, un terzo sotto il comando di Abisài figlio di Zeruià, fratello di Ioab, e un terzo sotto il comando di Ittài di Gat. Poi il re disse al popolo: "Voglio uscire anch'io con voi!".
3 But the men said, "You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore it is better that you send us help from the city."	3 Ma il popolo rispose: "Tu non devi uscire, perché se noi fossimo messi in fuga, non si farebbe alcun caso di noi; quand'anche perisse la metà di noi, non se ne farebbe alcun caso, ma tu conti per diecimila di noi; è meglio che ti tenga pronto a darci aiuto dalla città".
4 The king said to them, "Whatever seems best to you I will do." So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands.	4 Il re rispose loro: "Farò quello che vi sembra bene". Il re si fermò al fianco della porta, mentre tutto l'esercito usciva a schiere di cento e di mille uomini.
5 And the king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom.	5 Il re ordinò a Ioab, ad Abisài e ad Ittài: "Trattatemi con riguardo il giovane Assalonne!". E tutto il popolo udì quanto il re ordinò a tutti i capi nei riguardi di Assalonne.
6 So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.	6 L'esercito uscì in campo contro Israele e la battaglia ebbe luogo nella foresta di Èfraim.
7 And the men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men.	7 La gente d'Israele fu in quel luogo sconfitta dai servi di Davide; la strage fu grande: in quel giorno caddero ventimila uomini.
8 The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword.	8 La battaglia si estese su tutta la contrada e la foresta divorò in quel giorno molta più gente di quanta non ne avesse divorato la spada.
9 And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on.	9 Ora Assalonne s'imbatté nei servi di Davide. Assalonne cavalcava il mulo; il mulo entrò sotto i rami di un grande terebinto e la testa di Assalonne rimase impigliata nel terebinto e così egli restò sospeso fra cielo e terra; mentre il mulo che era sotto di lui passava oltre.
10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, "Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak."	10 Un uomo lo vide e venne a riferire a Ioab: "Ho visto Assalonne appeso a un terebinto".
11 Joab said to the man who told him, "What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a girdle."	11 Ioab rispose all'uomo che gli portava la notizia: "Dunque, l'hai visto? E perché non l'hai tu, sul posto, steso al suolo? Io non avrei mancato di darti dieci sicli d'argento e una cintura".
12 But the man said to Joab, "Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, 'For my sake protect the young man Absalom.'	12 Ma quell'uomo disse a Ioab: "Quand'anche mi fossero messi in mano mille sicli d'argento, io non stenderei la mano sul figlio del re; perché con i nostri orecchi abbiamo udito l'ordine che il re ha dato a te, ad Abisài e a Ittài: Salvatemi il giovane Assalonne!
13 On the other hand, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof."	13 Se io avessi commesso di mia testa una perfidia, poiché nulla rimane nascosto al re, tu stesso saresti sorto contro di me".
14 Joab said, "I will not waste time like this with you." And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive in the oak.	14 Allora Ioab disse: "Io non voglio perdere così il tempo con te". Prese in mano tre dardi e li immerse nel cuore di Assalonne, che era ancora vivo nel folto del terebinto.
15 And ten young men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him, and killed him.	15 Poi dieci giovani scudieri di Ioab circondarono Assalonne, lo colpirono e lo finirono.
16 Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel; for Joab restrained them.	16 Allora Ioab suonò la tromba e il popolo cessò di inseguire Israele, perché Ioab aveva trattenuto il popolo.
17 And they took Absalom, and threw him into a great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones; and all Israel fled every one to his own home.	17 Poi presero Assalonne, lo gettarono in una grande fossa nella foresta ed elevarono sopra di lui un enorme mucchio di pietre. Tutto Israele era fuggito ciascuno nella sua tenda.
18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar which is in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to keep my name in remembrance"; he called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom's monument to this day.	18 Ora Assalonne mentre era in vita, si era eretta la stele che è nella Valle del re; perché diceva: "Io non ho un figlio che conservi il ricordo del mio nome"; chiamò quella stele con il suo nome e la si chiamò di Assalonne fino ad oggi.
19 Then said Ahima-az the son of Zadok, "Let me run, and carry tidings to the king that the LORD has delivered him from the power of his enemies."	19 Achimaaz figlio di Zadòk disse a Ioab: "Correrò a portare al re la notizia che il Signore gli ha fatto giustizia contro i suoi nemici".
20 And Joab said to him, "You are not to carry tidings today; you may carry tidings another day, but today you shall carry no tidings, because the king's son is dead."	20 Ioab gli rispose: "Oggi tu non sarai l'uomo della buona notizia, la porterai un altro giorno; non porterai oggi la bella notizia perché il figlio del re è morto".
21 Then Joab said to the Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed before Joab, and ran.	21 Poi Ioab disse all'Etiope: "Va' e riferisci al re quello che hai visto". L'Etiope si prostrò a Ioab e corse via.
22 Then Ahima-az the son of Zadok said again to Joab, "Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite." And Joab said, "Why will you run, my son, seeing that you will have no reward for the tidings?"	22 Achimaaz, figlio di Zadòk, disse di nuovo a Ioab: "Qualunque cosa avvenga, lasciami correre dietro all'Etiope". Ioab gli disse: "Ma perché correre, figlio mio? La buona notizia non ti porterà nulla di buono".
23 "Come what may," he said, "I will run." So he said to him, "Run." Then Ahima-az ran by the way of the plain, and outran the Cushite.	23 E l'altro: "Qualunque cosa avvenga, voglio correre". Ioab gli disse: "Corri!". Allora Achimaaz prese la corsa per la strada della valle e oltrepassò l'Etiope.
24 Now David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and when he lifted up his eyes and looked, he saw a man running alone.	24 Davide stava seduto fra le due porte; la sentinella salì sul tetto della porta dal lato del muro; alzò gli occhi, guardò ed ecco un uomo correre tutto solo.
25 And the watchman called out and told the king. And the king said, "If he is alone, there are tidings in his mouth." And he came apace, and drew near.	25 La sentinella gridò e avvertì il re. Il re disse: "Se è solo, porta una buona notizia". Quegli andava avvicinandosi sempre più.
26 And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gate and said, "See, another man running alone!" The king said, "He also brings tidings."	26 Poi la sentinella vide un altro uomo che correva e gridò al guardiano: "Ecco un altro uomo correre tutto solo!". E il re: "Anche questo porta una buona notizia".
27 And the watchman said, "I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahima-az the son of Zadok." And the king said, "He is a good man, and comes with good tidings."	27 La sentinella disse: "Il modo di correre del primo mi pare quello di Achimaaz, figlio di Zadòk". E il re disse: "È un uomo dabbene: viene certo per una lieta notizia!".
28 Then Ahima-az cried out to the king, "All is well." And he bowed before the king with his face to the earth, and said, "Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who raised their hand against my lord the king."	28 Achimaaz gridò al re: "Pace!". Prostratosi dinanzi al re con la faccia a terra, disse: "Benedetto sia il Signore tuo Dio che ha messo in tuo potere gli uomini che avevano alzato le mani contro il re mio signore!".
29 And the king said, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" Ahima-az answered, "When Joab sent your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I do not know what it was."	29 Il re disse: "Il giovane Assalonne sta bene?". Achimaàz rispose: "Quando Ioab mandava il servo del re e me tuo servo, io vidi un gran tumulto, ma non so di che cosa si trattasse".
30 And the king said, "Turn aside, and stand here." So he turned aside, and stood still.	30 Il re gli disse: "Mettiti là, da parte". Quegli si mise da parte e aspettò.
31 And behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, "Good tidings for my lord the king! For the LORD has delivered you this day from the power of all who rose up against you."	31 Ed ecco arrivare l'Etiope che disse: "Buone notizie per il re mio signore! Il Signore ti ha reso oggi giustizia, liberandoti dalle mani di quanti erano insorti contro di te".
32 The king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" And the Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil, be like that young man."	32 Il re disse all'Etiope: "Il giovane Assalonne sta bene?". L'Etiope rispose: "Diventino come quel giovane i nemici del re mio signore e quanti insorgono contro di te per farti il male!".
33 And the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!"
