Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition BIBBIA TINTORI
Now Joseph was taken down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.1 Giuseppe adunque fu menato in Egitto, e, dagli Ismaeliti che l'avevan condotto, lo comprò l'egiziano Putifar, eunuco di Faraone, e capitano dell'esercito.
The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian,2 Or il Signore era con Giuseppe, al quale riusciva bene tutto quel che faceva. E Giuseppe abitando nella casa del suo padrone,
and his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hands.3 che ben conosceva come il Signore fosse con lui e gli facesse prosperare nelle mani tutto ciò che intraprendeva,
So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had.4 entrò nelle grazie di lui, e servendolo come sopraintendente di tutte le cose, governava la casa che gli era stata affidata e tutti i beni rimessi nelle sue mani.
From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had, in house and field.5 E il Signore benedisse la casa dell'Egiziano per amor di Giuseppe, e ne moltiplicò tutti i beni, tanto in casa che in campagna.
So he left all that he had in Joseph's charge; and having him he had no concern for anything but the food which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome and good-looking.6 Così Putifar non aveva altro pensiero che di mettersi a tavola a mangiare. Or Giuseppe era di volto avvenente e di bella presenza.
And after a time his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and said, "Lie with me."7 Passato adunque un po' di tempo, la padrona, mise gli occhi addosso a Giuseppe e gli disse: « Dormi con me ».
But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Lo, having me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my hand;8 Ma egli, non acconsentendo all'azione indegna, disse: « Ecco, il mio padrone, avendo messo tutto nelle mie mani, non sa quel che abbia in casa;
he is not greater in this house than I am; nor has he kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"9 e tutto ha dato in mio potere, mi ha affidato tutto, tranne te che sei sua moglie. Come dunque potrei commettere questo male e peccare contro il mio Dio? »
And although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie with her or to be with her.10 Sebbene la donna tutti i giorni molestasse il giovinetto con simili discorsi, egli non acconsentì mai al peccato.
But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house,11 Or avvenne che un giorno, essendo Giuseppe entrato in casa per fare un certo lavoro, e non essendoci alcun testimonio,
she caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me." But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and got out of the house.12 essa, afferrato l'orlo del suo mantello, gli disse: « Vieni a dormire con me ». Ma egli, lasciatole in mano il mantello, se ne fuggì fuori.
And when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had fled out of the house,13 E la donna, vedendosi col mantello nelle mani e disprezzata,
she called to the men of her household and said to them, "See, he has brought among us a Hebrew to insult us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice;14 chiamò la gente di casa e disse loro: « Guardate, ha menato in casa un Ebreo, perchè ci schernisse. Egli è venuto da me per giacersi meco, ma avendo io gridato,
and when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me, and fled and got out of the house."15 appena ha sentito la mia voce, m'ha lasciato in mano il suo mantello e se n'è fuggito via ».
Then she laid up his garment by her until his master came home,16 E in prova della sua fedeltà, quando il marito tornò a casa, gli fece vedere il mantello che essa aveva ritenuto,
and she told him the same story, saying, "The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought among us, came in to me to insult me;17 e disse: «Quel servo ebreo che tu ci hai menato è venuto da me per schernirmi;
but as soon as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment with me, and fled out of the house."18 ma, sentiti i miei gridi, mi ha lasciato in mano il mantello ed è fuggito ».
When his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, "This is the way your servant treated me," his anger was kindled.19 Sentite queste cose, il padrone, troppo credulo alle parole della moglie, arse di grande sdegno,
And Joseph's master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison.20 e fece mettere Giuseppe nella prigione ove erano detenuti i carcerati del re, e ce lo fece rinchiudere.
But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.21 Ma il Signore fu con Giuseppe, e avendo compassione di lui, lo fece entrar nelle grazie del governatore della prigione,
And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's care all the prisoners who were in the prison; and whatever was done there, he was the doer of it;22 il quale gli affidò tutti i prigionieri che erano nel carcere, e tutto era fatto sotto i suoi ordini.
the keeper of the prison paid no heed to anything that was in Joseph's care, because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper.23 E al governatore, avendo affidata ogni cosa a Giuseppe, non pensava a nulla, perchè il Signore era con Giuseppe e faceva prosperare tutto quello che egli intraprendeva.
