1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids.	1 Poi Giacobbe alzò gli occhi, e vide arrivare Esaù che aveva con sé quattrocento uomini. Allora divise i figlioli fra Lia, Rachele e le due serve;
2 And he put the maids with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.	2 e mise in testa le serve con i loro figlioli, poi Lia con i suoi figlioli e ultimi Rachele con Giuseppe.
3 He himself went on before them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.	3 Intanto egli stesso passò dinanzi a loro, si prostrò sette volte fino a terra, mentre andava avvicinandosi a suo fratello.
4 But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.	4 Ma Esaù gli corse incontro, lo abbracciò, gli gettò le braccia al collo e lo baciò. E piansero.
5 And when Esau raised his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, "Who are these with you?" Jacob said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."	5 Poi alzò gli occhi e vide le donne e i fanciulli e disse: "Chi sono questi con te?". Rispose: "Sono i figlioli che Dio s'è compiaciuto di dare al servo tuo".
6 Then the maids drew near, they and their children, and bowed down;	6 Allora si fecero avanti le serve con i loro figlioli e si prostrarono;
7 Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down; and last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down.	7 poi si fecero avanti anche Lia e i suoi figlioli e si prostrarono e infine si fecero avanti Rachele e Giuseppe e si prostrarono.
8 Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" Jacob answered, "To find favor in the sight of my lord."	8 Domandò ancora: "Che ti serve tutta quella schiera che ho incontrato?". Rispose: "Per trovar grazia agli occhi del mio signore!".
9 But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself."	9 Esaù riprese: "Ce n'ho abbastanza, fratello mio; tieni per te quello ch'è tuo".
10 Jacob said, "No, I pray you, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand; for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God, with such favor have you received me.	10 Ma Giacobbe insistette: "No, ti prego, se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, accetterai dalla mia mano il dono mio, perché è appunto per questo che io sono venuto alla tua presenza, come si viene alla presenza di Dio, e tu mi hai accolto bene.
11 Accept, I pray you, my gift that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." Thus he urged him, and he took it.	11 Accetta, ti prego, il mio dono che ti è stato presentato, perché Dio mi ha favorito e io ho di tutto". E insisté tanto che accettò.
12 Then Esau said, "Let us journey on our way, and I will go before you."	12 Poi quello disse: "Leviamo le tende e marciamo; io camminerò davanti a te".
13 But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the flocks and herds giving suck are a care to me; and if they are overdriven for one day, all the flocks will die.	13 Gli rispose: "Il mio signore sa che i fanciulli sono di tenera età e che ho a mio carico le greggi e le vacche che allattano; se si strapazzano anche un giorno solo, tutte le bestie moriranno.
14 Let my lord pass on before his servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle which are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir."	14 Che il mio signore favorisca precedere il suo servo, mentre io me ne verrò pian piano, secondo il passo di questo bestiame che va davanti e secondo il passo dei fanciulli, finché arriverò presso il mio signore a Seir".
15 So Esau said, "Let me leave with you some of the men who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord."	15 Aggiunse allora Esaù: "Permetti almeno che io lasci con te un po' della gente che ho con me". Rispose: "Ma perché? Basta che io trovi grazia agli occhi del mio signore!".
16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.	16 Così, in quel giorno stesso, Esaù rifece il suo cammino verso Seir.
17 But Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house, and made booths for his cattle; therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.	17 Giacobbe, invece, levò le tende alla volta di Succot, dove costruì una casa per sé e per il suo gregge fece delle capanne. E' per questo che il nome di quel luogo fu chiamato Succot.
18 And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram; and he camped before the city.	18 Poi Giacobbe arrivò sano e salvo alla città di Sichem, nel paese di Canaan, quando tornò da Paddan-Aram, e piantò le tende dirimpetto alla città.
19 And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent.	19 In seguito comprò dai figli di Camor, padre di Sichem, per cento pezzi d'argento, quella porzione di campagna dove aveva rizzato la sua tenda.
20 There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.	20 Ivi eresse un altare e lo chiamò El, Dio d'Israele.
