| 1 - Or io dico: per tutto il tempo che un erede è fanciullo, non differisce punto da un servo, pur essendo padrone di tutto, | 1 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; |
| 2 e sta sotto tutori e amministratori fino al tempo prestabilito dal padre. | 2 but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. |
| 3 Così anche noi, quando eravamo fanciulli, eravamo schiavi sotto gli elementi del mondo, | 3 So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. |
| 4 ma quando venne la pienezza dei tempi, Dio mandò suo figlio, nato di donna, nato sotto la Legge, | 4 But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, |
| 5 per riscattare quelli che erano sotto la Legge, e far che noi ricevessimo l'adozione dei figli. | 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. |
| 6 E perchè siete figli, mandò Iddio lo Spirito del Figlio suo nei vostri cuori, il quale grida: «Abba» («Padre»). | 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" |
| 7 Sicchè tu non sei più servo ma figlio, e, se figlio, anche erede per opera di Dio. | 7 So through God you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir. |
| 8 Allora non conoscendo Dio, eravate servi di tali che per loro natura non sono dèi, | 8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were in bondage to beings that by nature are no gods; |
| 9 invece ora, conoscendo Dio, e meglio ancora, riconosciuti da Dio, come mai vi rivolgete di nuovo ai deboli e poveri elementi, ai quali volete daccapo farvi schiavi? | 9 but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits, whose slaves you want to be once more? |
| 10 Voi osservate i giorni e i mesi e le ricorrenze e gli anni; | 10 You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years! |
| 11 in verità temo di voi, che invano io abbia tra voi faticato. Esortazioni di Paolo ed effusioni di cuore | 11 I am afraid I have labored over you in vain. |
| 12 Siate come me, o fratelli, ve ne prego, che anch'io son come voi. Voi non mi avete mai fatto alcun torto; | 12 Brethren, I beseech you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong; |
| 13 sapete bene come la prima volta vi evangelizzai pur con un'infermità della carne; e questa prova a cui la mia carne vi sottoponeva, | 13 you know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first; |
| 14 voi nè la dispregiaste nè n'avete mostrato disgusto, ma mi avete accolto come un angelo di Dio, come Cristo Gesù. | 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. |
| 15 Dove dunque se n'è ito quel vostro apprezzamento di felicità? poichè io vi rendo questa testimonianza, che se fosse stato possibile, vi sareste cavati gli occhi per darmeli. | 15 What has become of the satisfaction you felt? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me. |
| 16 Sicchè, sono io diventato vostro nemico dicendovi la verità? | 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? |
| 17 costoro vi mostrano zelo ma non onestamente, anzi vi voglion chiuder fuori perchè voi volgiate le vostre premure a loro. | 17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose; they want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. |
| 18 Ora è bello essere oggetto di premure nel bene, sempre, e non solo quando io son tra voi presente, | 18 For a good purpose it is always good to be made much of, and not only when I am present with you. |
| 19 o figliuoli miei, che io di nuovo partorisco, fino a tanto che sia formato Cristo in voi; | 19 My little children, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you! |
| 20 oh, come vorrei esser tra voi ora, e cambiar tono, perchè son tanto perplesso a riguardo vostro. Inutilità della Legge dimostrata con l'allegoria di Agar e di Sara | 20 I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you. |
| 21 Ditemi voi che volete esser sotto la Legge, non l'avete letta la Legge? | 21 Tell me, you who desire to be under law, do you not hear the law? |
| 22 Poichè sta scritto che Abramo ebbe due figli, uno dalla schiava e uno dalla libera. | 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman. |
| 23 Ma quello che ebbe dalla schiava, nacque secondo la carne, quello che ebbe dalla libera fu secondo la promessa. | 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise. |
| 24 Le quali cose sono state dette per allegoria; perchè coteste donne figurano due patti d'alleanza; l'uno dal Monte Sinai, che porta alla schiavitù, e questo è Agar, | 24 Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. |
| 25 e Agar è appunto il monte Sinai nell'Arabia; e corrisponde alla Gerusalemme d'ora, che è serva co' suoi figliuoli. | 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. |
| 26 Invece la Gerusalemme di lassù è libera, e quella è la nostra madre, | 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. |
| 27 poichè sta scritto: "Rallegrati, o sterile, che non partorisci; prorompi in grida di gioia, o tu che non hai provato le doglie del parto, poichè molti più saranno i figli della donna abbandonata che di quella che aveva marito" | 27 For it is written, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married." |
| 28 Ora noi, o fratelli, siamo figliuoli secondo la promessa che riguardava Isacco. | 28 Now we, brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise. |
| 29 Ma come allora il figlio secondo la carne perseguitò quello secondo lo spirito, | 29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now. |
| 30 così anche ora. Ma la Scrittura che dice? "Caccia la schiava e il figlio di lei, poichè non avrà l'eredità il figlio della schiava insieme col figlio della libera". | 30 But what does the scripture say? "Cast out the slave and her son; for the son of the slave shall not inherit with the son of the free woman." |
| 31 Pertanto, o fratelli, noi non siamo figli della schiava, ma della libera. | 31 So, brethren, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. |
