Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel. And the men of Israel fled before the face of the Philistines, and they fell down slain on mount Gilboa.1 Les Philistins livrèrent bataille à Israël et les Israélites s'enfuirent devant les Philistins ettombèrent, frappés à mort, sur le mont Gelboé.
And the Philistines rushed upon Saul, and upon his sons, and they struck down Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.2 Les Philistins serrèrent de près Saül et ses fils et ils tuèrent Jonathan, Abinadab et Malki-Shua,les fils de Saül.
And the entire weight of the battle was turned against Saul. And the men who were archers pursued him. And he was severely wounded by the archers.3 Le poids du combat se porta sur Saül. Les tireurs d'arc le surprirent et il fut blessé gravement parles tireurs.
Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and strike me, otherwise these uncircumcised may come and kill me, mocking me.” And his armor bearer was not willing. For he had been struck with an exceedingly great fear.
And when his armor bearer had seen this, namely, that Saul had died, he too fell upon his sword, and he died with him.5 Voyant que Saül était mort, l'écuyer se jeta lui aussi sur son épée et mourut avec lui.
Therefore, Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, on the same day together.6 Ainsi moururent ensemble ce jour-là Saül, ses trois fils et son écuyer.
Then, seeing that the men of the Israelites had fled, and that Saul had died with his sons, the men of Israel who were across the valley or beyond the Jordan abandoned their cities, and they fled. And the Philistines went and lived there.7 Lorsque les Israélites qui étaient de l'autre côté de la vallée et ceux qui étaient de l'autre côté duJourdain virent que les hommes d'Israël étaient en déroute et que Saül et ses fils avaient péri, ils abandonnèrentleurs villes et prirent la fuite. Les Philistins vinrent s'y établir.
Then, when the next day arrived, the Philistines came, so that they might despoil the slain. And they found Saul and his three sons lying on mount Gilboa.8 Le lendemain, les Philistins, venus pour détrousser les morts, trouvèrent Saül et ses trois filsgisant sur le mont Gelboé.
And they cut off the head of Saul. And they despoiled him of the armor, and they sent it into the land of the Philistines all around, so that it might be announced in the temples of the idols and among their people.9 Ils lui tranchèrent la tête et le dépouillèrent de ses armes, et ils les firent porter à la ronde dans lepays philistin, pour annoncer la bonne nouvelle à leurs idoles et à leur peuple.
And they placed his armor in the temple of Ashtaroth. But his body they suspended on the wall of Bethshan.10 Ils déposèrent ses armes dans le temple d'Astarté; quant à son corps, ils l'attachèrent au rempartde Bet-Shân.
And when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead had heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,11 Lorsque les habitants de Yabesh de Galaad apprirent ce que les Philistins avaient fait à Saül,
all the most valiant men rose up, and they walked all night, and they took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan. And they went to Jabesh Gilead, and they burned them there.12 tous les braves se mirent en route et, après avoir marché toute la nuit, ils enlevèrent du rempartde Bet-Shân le corps de Saül et de ses fils et, les ayant apportés à Yabesh, ils les y brûlèrent.
And they took their bones, and they buried them in the forest of Jabesh. And they fasted for seven days.13 Puis ils prirent leurs ossements, les ensevelirent sous le tamaris de Yabesh et jeûnèrent pendantsept jours.
