These are the nations which the Lord left, so that by them he might instruct Israel and all who had not known the wars of the Canaanites,1 Estas são as gentes que o Senhor deixou para provar por meio delas Israel, todos aqueles que não tinham conhecido as guerras dos Cananeus,
so that afterward their sons might learn to contend with their enemies, and to have a willingness to do battle:2 a fim de que as gerações de Israel aprendessem a combater contra os inimigos, se habituassem a pelejar:
the five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites who were living on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath.3 os cinco sátrapas (ou príncipes) dos Filisteus, todos os Cananeus, os Sidónios e os Heveus, que habitavam no monte Líbano, desde o monte de Baal-Hermon até à entrada de Emat.
And he left them, so that by them he might test Israel, as to whether or not they would listen to the commandments of the Lord, which he instructed to their fathers by the hand of Moses.4 Deixou-os para provar por meio deles Israel, (para ver) se ele obedeceria ou não aos mandamentos que o Senhor tinha intimado a seus pais, por meio de Moisés.
And so, the sons of Israel lived in the midst of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.5 Os filhos de Israel habitaram no meio dos Cananeus, dos Heteus, dos Amorreus, dos Ferezeus, dos Heveus e dos Jebuseus,
And they took their daughters as wives, and they gave their own daughters to their sons, and they served their gods.6 e tomaram por mulheres as suas filhas, e eles mesmos deram suas filhas aos filhos deles, e serviram os seus deuses.
And they did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they forgot their God, while serving the Baals and Ashtaroth.7 Fizeram o mal, diante do Senhor, os filhos de Israel, e esqueceram-se do seu Deus, servindo aos Baalins e a Astarte.
And the Lord, having become angry with Israel, delivered them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Mesopotamia, and they served him for eight years.8 Irado o Senhor contra Israel, entregou-os nas mãos de Chusan Basataim, rei da Mesopotâmia, a quem estiveram sujeitos oito anos.
And they cried out to the Lord, who raised up for them a savior, and he freed them, namely, Othniel, the son of Kenaz, a younger brother of Caleb.9 (Então) clamaram ao Senhor, que lhes suscitou um salvador, que os livrou, isto é, Otoniel, filho de Cenez, irmão mais novo de Caleb.
And the Spirit of the Lord was in him, and he judged Israel. And he went out to fight, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Syria, and he overwhelmed him.10 O espírito do Senhor esteve nele, e julgou Israel. Saiu para a guerra, e o Senhor entregou-lhe nas mãos Chusan Basataim, rei da Síria, e derrotou-o.
And the land was quiet for forty years. And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, died.11 O país ficou em paz durante quarenta anos, e Otoniel filho de Cenez morreu.
Then the sons of Israel resumed doing evil in the sight of the Lord, who strengthened Eglon, the king of Moab, against them because they did evil in his sight.12 Os filhos de Israel recomeçaram a fazer o mal diante do Senhor, o qual deu força contra eles a Eglon, rei de Moab, porque tinham feito o mal na sua presença.
And he joined to him the sons of Ammon and the sons of Amalek. And he went forth and struck Israel, and he possessed the City of Palms.13 Eglon uniu-se com os filhos de Amon e de Amalec, avançou, derrotou Israel e apoderou-se da cidade das Palmeiras.
And the sons of Israel served Eglon, the king of Moab, for eighteen years.14 E os filhos de Israel serviram a Eglon, rei de Moab, durante dezoito anos.
And afterward, they cried out to the Lord, who raised up for them a savior, called Ehud, the son of Gera, the son of Benjamin, who used either hand as well as the right hand. And the sons of Israel sent gifts to Eglon, the king of Moab, by him.15 Depois disto, clamaram ao Senhor, que lhes suscitou um salvador chamado Aod, filho de Gera, filho de Jemini, que era canhoto. Os filhos de Israel mandaram, por meio dele, presentes a Eglon, rei de Moab.
And he made for himself a two-edged sword, having a handle, reaching to the middle, the length of the palm of a hand. And he was girded with it under his cloak, on the right thigh.16 Aod mandou fazer para si um punhal de dois gumes, que tinha os copos da largura da palma da mão, e o cingiu debaixo das vestes no lado direito.
And he offered the gifts to Eglon, the king of Moab. Now Eglon was exceedingly fat.17 E ofereceu os presentes a Eglon, rei de Moab, que era em extremo gordo.
And when he had presented the gifts to him, he followed out his companions, who had arrived with him.18 Depois de lhe ter oferecido os presentes, foi seguindo os companheiros, que tinham ido com ele.
And then, returning from Gilgal where the idols were, he said to the king, “I have a secret word for you, O king.” And he ordered silence. And when all those who were around him had departed,19 Voltando de Galgala, onde estavam os ídolos, disse ao rei: Tenho que dizer-te, ó rei, uma palavra em segredo. O rei impôs-lhe silêncio, e, tendo saído todos os que o rodearam,
Ehud entered to him. Now he was sitting alone in a summer upper room. And he said, “I have a word from God to you.” And immediately he rose up from his throne.20 Aod aproximou-se do rei, que estava sentado só no seu quarto de verão, e disse-lhe: Tenho que dizer-te uma palavra da parte de Deus. O rei levantou-se logo do trono,
And Ehud extended his left hand, and he took the dagger from his right thigh. And he thrust it into his abdomen21 e Aod, estendendo a mão esquerda, tirou o punhal do lado direito e cravou-lho no ventre,
so strongly that the handle followed the blade into the wound, and was enclosed by the great amount of fat. Neither did he withdraw the sword. Instead, he left it in the body just as he had struck with it. And immediately, by the private parts of nature, the filth of the bowels went out.22 com tanta força que os copos entraram com a lâmina pela ferida, e ficou coberta pela muita gordura. E não tirou o punhal, mas, como o cravou, assim o deixou no corpo; e logo os excrementos do ventre saíram pelas sua vias naturais.
Then Ehud carefully closed the doors of the upper room. And securing the bars,23 Aod, tendo fechado muito bem as portas do quarto, e deixando-as trancadas,
he departed by a back exit. And the servants of the king, entering, saw that the doors of the upper room were closed, and they said, “Perhaps he is emptying his bowels in the summer room.”24 saiu pela galeria. Os criados do rei, quando entraram, viram fechadas as portas do quarto, e disseram: Talvez esteja satisfazendo alguma necessidade corporal no seu quarto de verão.
And after waiting a long time, until they were embarrassed, and seeing that no one opened the door, they took the key, and opening it, they found their lord lying dead on the ground.25 Mas, depois de esperarem muito tempo, ficaram alarmados e, vendo que ninguém abria, tomaram a chave, e, abrindo, encontraram o seu senhor morto estendido por terra.
But Ehud, while they were in confusion, escaped and passed by the place of the idols, from which he had returned. And he arrived at Seirath.26 Enquanto estavam nesta perturbação, Aod fugiu e passou pelo lugar dos ídolos, donde tinha voltado atrás, e chegou a Seirat.
And immediately he sounded the trumpet on Mount Ephraim. And the sons of Israel descended with him, he himself advancing at the front.27 Logo tocou a trombeta sobre o monte de Efraim, e os filhos de Israel desceram com ele, marchando ele na frente.
And he said to them: “Follow me. For the Lord has delivered our enemies, the Moabites, into our hands.” And they descended after him, and they occupied the fords of the Jordan, which cross over to Moab. And they did not permit anyone to cross.28 Disse-lhes: Segui-me, porque o Senhor entregou em nossas mãos os Moabitas, nossos inimigos. Desceram atrás dele e ocuparam os vaus do Jordão, por onde se vai a Moab, e não deixaram passar nenhum (Moabita).
And so, they struck down the Moabites at that time, about ten thousand, all strong and robust men. None of them were able to escape.29 Mataram naquela ocasião cerca de dez mil Moabitas, todos homens robustos e esforçados; nenhum deles pôde escapar.
And Moab was humbled in that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was quiet for eighty years.30 Naquele dia ficou Moab humilhado, sob a mão de Israel, e o país ficou em paz durante oitenta anos.
After him, there was Shamgar, the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred men of the Philistines with a plowshare. And he also defended Israel.31 Depois de Aod, Samgar, filho de Anat, matou seiscentos Filisteus com uma relha de arado, defendendo também ele Israel.
