1 And behold, a sedition rose up in Ephraim. Then, while passing by toward the north, they said to Jephthah: “When you were going to fight against the sons of Ammon, why were you unwilling to summon us, so that we might go with you? Therefore, we will burn down your house.”	1 Cependant il s'excita une sédition dans Ephraïm; car les hommes de cette tribu, passant vers le nord, dirent à Jephté: Pourquoi, lorsque vous alliez combattre les enfants d'Ammon, n'avez-vous pas voulu nous appeler, pour que nous y allassions avec vous? Nous allons donc mettre le feu à votre maison.
2 And he answered them: “I and my people were in a great conflict against the sons of Ammon. And I called you, so that you might offer assistance to me. And you were not willing to do so.	2 Jephté leur répondit: Nous avions une grande guerre, mon peuple et moi, contre les enfants d'Ammon; je vous ai prié de nous secourir, et vous ne l'avez pas voulu faire.
3 And discerning this, I put my life in my own hands, and I crossed to the sons of Ammon, and the Lord delivered them into my hands. What am I guilty of, that you would rise up in battle against me?”	3 Ce qu'ayant vu, j'ai exposé ma vie, et j'ai marché contre les enfants d'Ammon, et le Seigneur les a livrés entre mes mains. En quoi ai-je mérité que vous vous souleviez contre moi pour me combattre?
4 And so, calling to himself all the men of Gilead, he fought against Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck down Ephraim, because he had said, “Gilead is a fugitive from Ephraim, and he lives in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.”	4 Jephté, ayant donc appelé à lui tous les hommes de Galaad, combattit ceux d'Ephraïm, et les hommes de Galaad battirent ceux d'Ephraïm, qui disaient par mépris: Galaad est un échappé d'Ephraïm, qui demeure au milieu d'Ephraïm et de Manassé.
5 And the Gileadites occupied the fords of the Jordan, along which Ephraim was to return. And when anyone from the number of Ephraim had arrived, fleeing, and had said, “I beg that you permit me to pass,” the Gileadites would say to him, “Could you be an Ephraimite?” And if he said, “I am not,”	5 Les hommes de Galaad se saisirent des gués du Jourdain par où Ephraïm devait entrer chez lui; et lorsque quelque fuyard d'Ephraïm se présentait et disait: Je vous prie de me laisser passer; ils lui demandaient: N'êtes-vous pas Ephrathéen? et comme il lui répondait que non,
6 they would ask him, then say ‘Shibboleth,’ which is translated as ‘ear of grain.’ But he would answer ‘Sibboleth,’ not being able to express the word for an ear of grain in the same letters. And immediately apprehending him, they would cut his throat, at the same crossing point of the Jordan. And in that time of Ephraim, forty-two thousand fell.	6 ils lui répliquaient: Dites donc Schibboleth, c'est-à-dire un épi. Mais comme il prononçait Sibboleth, parce qu'il ne pouvait pas bien exprimer la première lettre de ce nom, ils le prenaient aussitôt et le tuaient au passage du Jourdain; de sorte qu'il y eut quarante-deux mille hommes de la tribu d'Ephraïm qui furent tués en ce jour-là.
7 And so Jephthah, the Gileadite, judged Israel for six years. And he died, and he was buried in his city in Gilead.	7 Jephté de Galaad jugea donc le peuple d'Israël pendant six ans; et il mourut ensuite, et fut enseveli dans sa ville de Galaad.
8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.	8 Abésan de Bethléem fut après lui juge d'Israël.
9 He had thirty sons, and the same number of daughters, whom he sent away to be given to husbands. And he accepted wives for his sons of the same number, bringing them into his house. And he judged Israel for seven years.	9 Il avait trente fils et autant de filles. Il fit sortir celles-ci de la maison en les mariant, et il fit venir autant de jeunes filles, qu'il donna pour femmes à ses fils; et après avoir jugé Israël pendant sept ans,
10 And he died, and he was buried in Bethlehem.	10 il mourut, et fut enseveli à Bethléem.
11 After him succeeded Elon, a Zebulunite. And he judged Israel for ten years.	11 Ahialon de Zabulon lui succéda, et jugea Israël pendant dix ans;
12 And he died, and he was buried in Zebulun.	12 et, étant mort, il fut enseveli dans Zabulon.
13 After him, Abdon, the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.	13 Abdon, fils d'Illel, de Pharathon, fut après lui Juge d'Israël.
14 And he had forty sons, and from them thirty grandsons, all riding upon seventy young donkeys. And he judged Israel for eight years.	14 Il eut quarante fils, et de ces fils trente petits-fils, qui montaient tous sur soixante-dix poulains d'ânesses. Il jugea Israël pendant huit ans;
15 And he died, and he was buried at Pirathon, in the land of Ephraim, on the mountain of Amalek.	15 et, étant mort, il fut enseveli à Pharathon, au pays d'Ephraïm, sur la montagne d'Amalec.
