1 After Abimelech, a leader rose up in Israel, Tola, the son of Puah, the paternal uncle of Abimelech, a man of Issachar, who lived in Shamir on mount Ephraim.	1 Dopo Abimelech sorse a salvare Israele Tola figlio di Pua, figlio di Dodo, della tribù di Issachar. Egli abitava in Shamir, sulla montagna di Efraim.
2 And he judged Israel for twenty-three years, and he died and was buried at Shamir.	2 Egli fu Giudice su Israele per ventitre anni: poi morì e fu sepolto in Shamir.
3 After him succeeded Jair, a Gileadite, who judged Israel for twenty-two years,	3 Dopo di lui sorse Jair di Galaad, che fu Giudice su Israele per ventidue anni.
4 having thirty sons sitting upon thirty young donkeys, and who were leaders of thirty cities, which from his name were called Havvoth Jair, that is, the towns of Jair, even to the present day, in the land of Gilead.	4 Egli aveva trenta figli, che montavano su altrettanti puledri e avevano trenta città, chiamate fino a oggi villaggi di Jair, nel paese di Galaad.
5 And Jair died, and he was buried in the place which is called Kamon.	5 Poi Jair morì e fu sepolto a Kamon.
6 But the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, joining new sins to old, and they served idols, the Baals and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria and Sidon, and of Moab and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines. And they abandoned the Lord, and they did not worship him.	6 I figli di Israele fecero di nuovo ciò che è male agli occhi di Jahvè: servirono i Baal e le Astarti, le divinità di Aram, di Sidone, di Moab, dei figli di Ammon e dei Filistei, e abbandonarono Jahvè invece di servirlo.
7 And the Lord, becoming angry against them, delivered them into the hands of the Philistines and the sons of Ammon.	7 Allora si accese contro Israele l’ira di Jahvè, che li lasciò in potere dei Filistei e dei figli di Ammon.
8 And they were afflicted and vehemently oppressed for eighteen years, all who were living beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorite, which is in Gilead,	8 Essi schiacciarono e oppressero per diciotto anni i figli di Israele: tutti i figli di Israele che erano oltre il Giordano nel paese degli Amorrei in Galaad.
9 to such a great extent that the sons of Ammon, crossing over the Jordan, laid waste to Judah and Benjamin and Ephraim. And Israel was exceedingly afflicted.	9 Anzi, i figli di Ammon passarono il Giordano per combattere anche contro Giuda, Beniamin e la casa di Efraim: Israele venne a trovarsi in grande angustia.
10 And crying out to the Lord, they said: “We have sinned against you. For we have forsaken the Lord our God, and we have served the Baals.”	10 Allora i figli di Israele alzarono la voce a Jahvè dicendo: «Noi abbiamo peccato contro di te, perché abbiamo abbandonato il nostro Dio per servire i Baal».
11 And the Lord said to them: “Did not the Egyptians, and the Amorites, and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines,	11 Jahvè rispose ai figli di Israele: «Non è forse vero che quando gli Egiziani, gli Amorrei, i figli di Ammon, i Filistei,
12 and also the Sidonians, and Amalek, and Canaan, oppress you, and so you cried out to me, and I rescued you from their hand?	12 i Sidoni, Amalec, Madian vi tenevano sotto il loro giogo, e voi avete alzato la voce a me, io vi ho liberato dalle loro mani?
13 And yet you have forsaken me, and you have worshipped foreign gods. For this reason, I will not continue to free you any more.	13 Ma voi mi avete abbandonato per servire altri dèi, perciò non continuerò più a liberarvi.
14 Go, and call upon the gods whom you have chosen. Let them free you in the time of anguish.”	14 Andate, alzate la voce agli dèi che vi siete scelti! Essi vi liberino dalla vostra tribolazione».
15 And the sons of Israel said to the Lord: “We have sinned. You may repay us in whatever way pleases you. Yet free us now.”	15 I figli di Israele risposero a Jahvè: «Abbiamo peccato! Fa’ di noi come sembra bene ai tuoi occhi; però, in questo momento salvaci!»
16 And saying these things, they cast out all the idols of the foreign gods from their regions, and they served the Lord God. And he was touched by their miseries.	16 Essi fecero scomparire di mezzo a loro gli dèi stranieri e tornarono a servire Jahvè. Così egli presto volle mettere fine alla sofferenza di Israele.
17 And then the sons of Ammon, shouting out together, pitched their tents in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together against them, and they made camp at Mizpah.	17 I figli di Ammon si radunarono e vennero ad accamparsi in Galaad: anche i figli di Israele si riunirono e si accamparono a Mizpa.
18 And the leaders of Gilead said to one another, “Whoever among us will be the first to begin to contend against the sons of Ammon, he shall be the leader of the people of Gilead.”	18 Allora il popolo e i capi di Galaad si dissero l’un l’altro: «Chi è colui che comincerà a combattere contro i figli di Ammon? Quegli diventerà il capo di tutti gli abitanti di Galaad».
