Joshua 5

1 Therefore, after all the kings of the Amorites, who were living across the Jordan toward the western region, and all the kings of Canaan, who possessed the places beside the great sea, had heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel, until they crossed over it, their heart was broken, and there remained in them no spirit, out of fear at the entrance of the sons of Israel.	1 Als aber alle Könige der Amoriter jenseits des Jordans im Westen und alle Könige der Kanaaniter am Meer vernahmen, wie der Herr das Jordanwasser vor den Israeliten austrocknen ließ, bis sie hindurchgezogen waren, da verzagte ihr Herz, und der Mut wich von ihnen angesichts der Israeliten.
2 So at that time, the Lord said to Joshua: “Make for yourself knives of stone, and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.”	2 Zu jener Zeit gebot der Herr dem Josua: "Mache dir Steinmesser und beschneide erneut die Israeliten zum zweitenmal!"
3 He did what the Lord had commanded, and he circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.	3 Da machte sich Josua Steinmesser und beschnitt die Israeliten am Hügel Aralot (Vorhäute).
4 Now this is the reason for the second circumcision: All the people who departed from Egypt of the male gender, all the men fit for war, died in the desert during the very long wandering way;	4 Dies ist die Veranlassung, weshalb Josua die Beschneidung vornahm: Das ganze Volk, das aus Ägypten weggezogen war, die Männer, alle Krieger, waren unterwegs in der Wüste gestorben.
5 all these had been circumcised. But the people who were born in the desert,	5 Sie alle waren beschnitten; alle aber, die nach dem Fortzug aus Ägypten unterwegs in der Wüste geboren wurden, hatte man nicht beschnitten.
6 throughout the forty years of the journey in the very broad wilderness, were uncircumcised, until the ones who had not listened to the voice of the Lord were consumed. For he had sworn to them before, that he would not reveal to them the land flowing with milk and honey.	6 Vierzig Jahre lang durchwanderten die Israeliten die Wüste, bis alle aus Ägypten ausgezogenen Kriegsleute aufgerieben waren, da sie der Stimme des Herrn nicht folgten. Ihnen hatte der Herr geschworen, er werde sie das Land nicht schauen lassen, dessen Verleihung er ihren Vätern eidlich versichert hatte, ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt.
7 The sons of these ones succeeded to the place of their fathers, and they were circumcised by Joshua. For they were uncircumcised, just as they had been born, and no one had circumcised them along the way.	7 Ihre Söhne aber ließ er an ihre Stelle treten; diese beschnitt nun Josua. Denn sie waren noch unbeschnitten, weil man sie unterwegs nicht beschnitten hatte.
8 Then, after they were all circumcised, they remained in the same place of the camp until they were healed.	8 Als die Beschneidung des ganzen Volkes durchgeführt war, blieben sie an ihren Plätzen im Lager bis zu ihrer Genesung.
9 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have taken away from you the disgrace of Egypt.” And the name of that place was called Gilgal, even to the present day.	9 Und der Herr sprach zu Josua: "Heute habe ich die Schmach Ägyptens von euch abgewälzt!" Man nannte jenen Ort Gilgal bis auf den heutigen Tag.
10 And the sons of Israel stayed at Gilgal, and they kept the Passover, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, in the plains of Jericho.	10 Die Israeliten lagerten in Gilgal. Am vierzehnten Tage des Monats feierten sie abends das Pascha in den Steppen von Jericho.
11 And on the following day, they ate unleavened bread from the grain of the land, and cooked grain, of the same year.	11 Sie aßen an dem Tage nach dem Pascha ungesäuerte Brote von dem Ertrag des Landes und Röstgetreide, genau an jenem Tag.
12 And the manna ceased after they ate from the grain of the land. And the sons of Israel no longer made use of that food. Instead, they ate from the grain of the present year, from the land of Canaan.	12 Am folgenden Tage aber hörte das Manna auf, da sie sich vom Landesertrag ernährten. So bekamen also die Israeliten kein Manna mehr, sondern lebten nun von dem, was das Land Kanaan in jenem Jahre hervorbrachte.
13 And when Joshua was in the field of the city of Jericho, he lifted up his eyes, and he saw a man standing opposite him, holding a drawn sword. And he went to him and said, “Are you one of ours, or one of our adversaries?”	13 Josua befand sich im Gebiet von Jericho. Er schaute auf, und siehe, da stand ein Mann vor ihm mit einem gezückten Schwert in der Hand. Josua ging auf ihn zu und fragte ihn: "Gehörst du zu uns oder zu unseren Feinden?"
14 And he responded: “Not at all. Instead, I am a prince of the host of the Lord, and now I have arrived.”	14 Er gab zur Antwort: "Nein, ich bin der Anführer des Kriegsheeres des Herrn und eben gekommen!" Da warf sich Josua auf sein Antlitz zur Erde nieder, huldigte und sagte zu ihm: "Was befiehlt der Herr seinem Knechte?"
15 Joshua fell prone on the ground. And reverencing, he said, “What does my lord say to his servant?”	15 Der Anführer des Kriegsheeres des Herrn entgegnete Josua: "Ziehe deine Schuhe von deinen Füßen, denn die Stätte, auf der du stehst, ist heilig!" Josua tat so.
16 He said: “Remove your shoes from your feet. For the place on which you stand is holy.” And Joshua did just as he had been commanded.
