In those days, as the number of disciples was increasing, there occurred a murmuring of the Greeks against the Hebrews, because their widows were treated with disdain in the daily ministration.1 Naqueles dias, crescendo o número dos discípulos, levantou-se uma murmuração dos Helenistas contra os hebreus, porque as suas viúvas eram desatendidas na distribuição quotidiana (dos socorros).
And so the twelve, calling together the multitude of the disciples, said: “It is not fair for us to leave behind the Word of God to serve at tables also.2 Então os doze, convocando a multidão dos discípulos, disseram: "Não é conveniente que deixemos a palavra de Deus para servir às mesas.
Therefore, brothers, search among yourselves for seven men of good testimony, filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom, whom we may appoint over this work.3 Portanto, irmãos, escolhei dentre vós sete varões de boa reputação, cheios de Espírito Santo e de sabedoria, aos quais encarreguemos desta obra.
Yet truly, we will be continually in prayer and in the ministry of the Word.”4 Nós, porém, ocupar-nos-emos totalmente na oração e no ministério da palavra."
And the plan pleased the entire multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and with the Holy Spirit, and Philip and Prochorus and Nicanor and Timon and Parmenas and Nicolas, a new arrival from Antioch.5 Agradou esta proposta a toda a assembleia e escolheram Estêvão, homem cheio de fé e do Espírito Santo, Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timão, Parmenas e Nicolau, prosélito de Antioquia.
These they set before the sight of the Apostles, and while praying, they imposed hands on them.6 Apresentaram-nos diante dos Apóstolos, e estes, depois de terem orado, impuseram-lhes as mãos.
And the Word of the Lord was increasing, and the number of disciples in Jerusalem was multiplied exceedingly. And even a large group of the priests were obedient to the faith.7 A palavra do Senhor ia-se espalhando cada vez mais, multiplicava-se muito o número dos discípulos em Jerusalém, e também uma grande multidão de sacerdotes aderia à fé.
Then Stephen, filled with grace and fortitude, wrought great signs and miracles among the people.8 Estêvão, cheio de graça e de fortaleza, fazia grandes prodígios e milagres entre o povo.
But certain ones, from the synagogue of the so-called Libertines, and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those who were from Cilicia and Asia rose up and were disputing with Stephen.9 Porém alguns da sinagoga, chamada dos Libertos, dos Cirenenses, dos Alexandrinos e dos que eram da Cilícia e da Asia, levantaram-se a disputar com Estêvão,
But they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.10 mas não podiam resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito que inspirava as suas palavras.
Then they suborned men who were to claim that they had heard him speaking words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.11 Então subornaram alguns que disseram: "Ouvimos dizer palavras de blasfêmia contra Moisés e contra Deus."
And thus did they stir up the people and the elders and the scribes. And hurrying together, they seized him and brought him to the council.12 Amotinaram assim o povo, os anciães e os escribas; e, avançando contra ele, o arrebataram e levaram ao Sinédrio,
And they set up false witnesses, who said: “This man does not cease to speak words against the holy place and the law.13 e apresentaram falsas testemunhas que diziam: "Este homem não cessa de proferir palavras contra o lugar santo e contra a lei;
For we have heard him saying that this Jesus the Nazarene will destroy this place and will change the traditions, which Moses handed down to us.”14 ouvimos-lhe dizer que esse Jesus de Nazaré há-de destruir este lugar e há-de mudar as tradições que Moisés nos deixou."
And all those who were sitting in the council, gazing at him, saw his face, as if it had become the face of an Angel.15 E, fixando nele os olhos todos os que estavam sentados no Sinédrio, viram o seu rosto como o rosto de um anjo.
