Therefore, Pilate then took Jesus into custody and scourged him.1 Pilatos tomou então Jesus e mandou-o flagelar.
And the soldiers, plaiting a crown of thorns, imposed it on his head. And they put a purple garment around him.2 Depois os soldados, tecendo uma coroa de espinhos, puseram-lha sobre a cabeça e revestiram-no com um manto de púrpura.
And they were approaching him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly.3 Aproximavam-se dele e diziam-lhe: "Salve, rei dos Judeus" e davam-lhe bofetadas.
Then Pilate went outside again, and he said to them: “Behold, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may realize that I find no case against him.”4 Saiu Pilatos ainda outra vez fora e disse-lhes: "Eis que vo-lo trago fora, para que conheçais que não encontro nele crime algum"
(Then Jesus went out, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he said to them, “Behold the man.”5 Saiu, pois, Jesus, trazendo a coroa de espinhos e o manto de púrpura. Pilatos disse-lhes: "Eis aqui o homem."
Therefore, when the high priests and the attendants had seen him, they cried out, saying: “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them: “Take him yourselves and crucify him. For I find no case against him.”6 Então os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os ministros, tendo-o visto gritaram: "Crucifica-o, crucifica-o!" Pilatos disse-lhes: "Tomai-o e crucificai-o, porque eu não encontro nele motivo algum de condenação."
The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law, he ought to die, for he has made himself the Son of God.”7 Os Judeus responderam-lhe: "Nós temos uma lei, e, segundo a lei, deve morrer, porque se fez Filho de Deus."
Therefore, when Pilate had heard this word, he was more fearful.8 Pilatos, tendo ouvido estas palavras, temeu ainda mais.
And he entered into the praetorium again. And he said to Jesus. “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no response.9 Entrou novamente no Pretório e disse a Jesus: "Donde és tu?" Mas Jesus não lhe deu resposta.
Therefore, Pilate said to him: “Will you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to crucify you, and I have authority to release you?”10 Então Pilatos disse-lhe: "Não me falas? Não sabes que tenho poder para te soltar, e também para te crucificar?"
Jesus responded, “You would not have any authority over me, unless it were given to you from above. For this reason, he who has handed me over to you has the greater sin.”11 Jesus respondeu: "Tu não terias poder algum sobre mim, se te não fosse dado do alto. Por isso, o que me entregou a ti, tem maior pecado."
And from then on, Pilate was seeking to release him. But the Jews were crying out, saying: “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. For anyone who makes himself a king contradicts Caesar.”12 Desde este momento, Pilatos procurava soltá-lo. Porém os Judeus gritaram: "Se soltas este, não és amigo de César, porque todo o que se faz rei, declara-se contra César."
Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus outside, and he sat down in the seat of judgment, in a place which is called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, it is called the Elevation.13 Pilatos, tendo ouvido estas palavras, conduziu Jesus para fora e sentou-se no seu tribunal, no lugar chamado Lithostrotos (em hebraica Gabhatha).
Now it was the preparation day of the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your king.”14 Era o dia da Preparação da Páscoa, cerca da hora sexta. Pilatos disse aos Judeus: "Eis o vosso rei!"
But they were crying out: “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests responded, “We have no king except Caesar.”15 Mas eles gritaram: "Tira-o, tira-o, crucifica-o!" Pilatos disse-lhes: "Pois eu hei-de crucificar o vosso rei?" Os pontífices responderam: "Não temos rei, senão César."
Therefore, he then handed him over to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him away.16 Então entregou-lho, para que fosse crucificado.
And carrying his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew it is called the Place of the Skull.17 Tomaram pois, Jesus, o qual, levando a sua cruz, saiu para o lugar chamado do Crânio (em hebraico Gólgotha),
There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.18 onde o crucificaram, e com ele outros dois, um de cada lado, e Jesus no meio.
Then Pilate also wrote a title, and he set it above the cross. And it was written: JESUS THE NAZARENE, KING OF THE JEWS.19 Pilatos redigiu um titulo, que mandou colocar sobre a cruz. Estava escrito nele: Jesus Nazareno, Rei dos Judeus.
Therefore, many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was close to the city. And it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin.20 Muitos Judeus leram este título, porque se achava perto da cidade o lugar onde foi crucificado. Estava redigido em hebraico, em latim e em grego."
Then the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Do not write, ‘King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’21 Os pontífices dos Judeus diziam, porém, a Pilatos: "Não escrevas: Rei dos Judeus, mas: Este homem disse: Eu sou Rei dos Judeus."
Pilate responded, “What I have written, I have written.”22 Pilatos respondeu: "O que escrevi, escrevi."
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified him, took his garments, and they made four parts, one part to each soldier, and the tunic.
Then they said to one another, “Let us not cut it, but instead let us cast lots over it, to see whose it will be.” This was so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, saying: “They have distributed my garments among themselves, and for my vesture they have cast lots.” And indeed, the soldiers did these things.24 disseram uns para os outros: "Não a rasguemos, mas lancemos sortes sobre ela, para ver a quem tocará." Cumpriu-se deste modo a Escritura, que diz: Repartiram as minhas vestes entre si, e lançaram sortes sobre a minha túnica (Ps. 22, 19). Os soldados assim fizeram.
And standing beside the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, and Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.25 Junto à cruz de Jesus estavam sua Mãe, a irmã de sua Mãe, Maria, mulher de Cléofas, e Maria Madalena.
Therefore, when Jesus had seen his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.”26 Jesus, vendo sua Mãe, e, junto dela, o discípulo que amava, disse a sua Mãe: "Mulher, eis o teu filho."
Next, he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own.27 Depois disse ao discípulo: "Eis a tua Mãe." E, desta hora por diante, a levou o discípulo para sua casa.
After this, Jesus knew that all had been accomplished, so in order that the Scripture might be completed, he said, “I thirst.”28 Em seguida, sabendo Jesus que tudo estava consumado, para se cumprir a Escritura, disse: "Tenho sede."
And there was a container placed there, full of vinegar. Then, placing a sponge full of vinegar around hyssop, they brought it to his mouth.29 Havia sido ali posto um vaso cheio de vinagre. Então, os soldados, ensopando no vinagre uma esponja e atando-a a uma cana de hissopo, chegaram-Iha à boca.
Then Jesus, when he had received the vinegar, said: “It is consummated.” And bowing down his head, he surrendered his spirit.30 Jesus, tendo tomado o vinagre, disse: "Tudo está consumado." Depois, inclinando a cabeça, rendeu o espírito.
Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), they petitioned Pilate in order that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away.31 Os Judeus, visto que era o dia da Preparação, para que não ficassem os corpos na cruz no sábado, porque aquele dia de sábado era de grande solenidade, rogaram a Pilatos que lhes fossem quebradas as pernas, e fossem tirados.
Therefore, the soldiers approached, and, indeed, they broke the legs of the first one, and of the other who was crucified with him.32 Foram, pois, os soldados, e quebraram as pernas ao primeiro e ao outro com quem ele havia sido crucificado.
But after they had approached Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.33 Mas, quando chegaram a Jesus, vendo que já estava morto, não lhe quebraram as pernas,
Instead, one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately there went out blood and water.34 mas um dos soldados traspassou-lhe o lado com uma lança, e imediatamente saiu sangue e água.
And he who saw this has offered testimony, and his testimony is true. And he knows that he speaks the truth, so that you also may believe.35 O que foi testemunha deste facto o atesta e o seu testemunho é digno de fé e ele sabe que diz a verdade para que também vós acrediteis.
For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “You shall not break a bone of him.”36 Porque estas coisas sucederam para que se cumprisse a Escritura: Não lhe quebreis osso algum (Ex. 19, 46 ; Nm. 9, 12).
And again, another Scripture says: “They shall look upon him, whom they have pierced.”37 E também diz outro lugar da Escritura: Lançarão o olhar para aquele a quem traspassaram (Zc. 12, 10).
Then, after these things, Joseph from Arimathea, (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews) petitioned Pilate so that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission. Therefore, he went and took away the body of Jesus.38 Depois disto, José de Arimateia, que era discípulo de Jesus, ainda que oculto por medo dos Judeus, rogou a Pilatos que lhe deixasse levar o corpo de Jesus. Pilatos permitiu-lho. Foi, pois, e tomou o corpo de Jesus.
Now Nicodemus also arrived, (who had gone to Jesus at first by night) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloe, weighing about seventy pounds.39 Nicodemos, o que tinha ido primeiramente de noite ter com Jesus, foi também, levando uma composição de quase cem libras de mirra e de aloés.
Therefore, they took the body of Jesus, and they bound it with linen cloths and the aromatic spices, just as it is the manner of the Jews to bury.40 Tomaram o corpo de Jesus e envolveram-no em lençóis com aromas, segundo a maneira de sepultar usada entre os Judeus.
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden there was a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.41 Ora, no lugar em que Jesus foi crucificado, havia um horto, e no horto um sepulcro novo, em que ninguém ainda tinha sido sepultado.
Therefore, because of the preparation day of the Jews, since the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.42 Por ser o dia da Preparação dos Judeus, e o sepulcro estar perto, depositaram lá Jesus.
