1 Before the feast day of the Passover, Jesus knew that the hour was approaching when he would pass from this world to the Father. And since he had always loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.	1 Antes da festa da Páscoa, sabendo Jesus que tinha chegado a sua hora de passar deste mundo ao Pai, tendo amado os seus, que estavam no mundo, amou-os até ao extremo.
2 And when the meal had taken place, when the devil had now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,	2 Durante a ceia, tendo já o demônio posto no coração de Judas Iscariotes, filho de Simão, a determinação de o entregar,
3 knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he came from God and was going to God,	3 Jesus, sabendo que o Pai tinha posto em suas mãos todas as coisas, que saíra de Deus e voltava para Deus,
4 he rose up from the meal, and he set aside his vestments, and when he had received a towel, he wrapped it around himself.	4 levantou-se da mesa, depôs as vestes, e, pegando numa toalha, cingiu-se com ela.
5 Next he put water into a shallow bowl, and he began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped.	5 Depois lançou água numa bacia, e começou a lavar os pés dos discípulos e a enxugá-los, com a toalha com que estava cingido.
6 And then he came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him, “Lord, would you wash my feet?”	6 Chegou, pois, a Simão Pedro. Pedro disse-lhe: "Senhor, tu lavares-me os pés?"
7 Jesus responded and said to him: “What I am doing, you do not now understand. But you shall understand it afterward.”	7 Jesus respondeu-lhe: "O que eu faço, tu não o compreendes agora, mas compreendê-lo-ás depois."
8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you will have no place with me.”	8 Pedro disse-lhe: "Não me lavarás jamais os pés." Jesus respondeu-lhe: "Se eu não te lavar, não terás parte comigo."
9 Simon Peter said to him, “Then Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!”	9 Simão Pedro disse-lhe: "Senhor, não somente os meus pés, mas também as mãos e a cabeça."
10 Jesus said to him: “He who is washed need only wash his feet, and then he will be entirely clean. And you are clean, but not all.”	10 Jesus disse-lhe: "Aquele que se banhou, não tem necessidade de se lavar, pois todo ele está limpo. Vós estais limpos, mas não todos."
11 For he knew which one would betray him. For this reason, he said, “You are not all clean.”	11 Ele sabia qual era o que o ia entregar, por isso disse: "Não estais todos limpos."
12 And so, after he washed their feet and received his vestments, when he had sat down at table again, he said to them: “Do you know what I have done for you?	12 Depois que lhes lavou os pés e que retomou as suas vestes, tendo-se tornado a pôr à mesa disse-lhes: "Compreendeis o que vos fiz?"
13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you speak well: for so I am.	13 Chamais-me Mestre e Senhor, e dizeis bem, porque o sou.
14 Therefore, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash the feet of one another.	14 Se eu, pois, sendo vosso Senhor e Mestre, vos lavei os pés, também vós deveis lavar os pés uns aos outros.
15 For I have given you an example, so that just as I have done for you, so also should you do.	15 Dei-vos o exemplo, para que, como eu vos fiz, assim façais vós também.
16 Amen, amen, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his Lord, and the apostle is not greater than he who sent him.	16 Em verdade, em verdade, vos digo: O servo não é maior do que seu senhor, nem o enviado é maior do que aquele que o enviou.
17 If you understand this, you shall be blessed if you will do it.	17 Se compreendeis estas coisas, bem-aventurados sereis se as praticardes.
18 I am not speaking about all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me shall lift up his heel against me.’	18 Não falo de todos vós; sei os que escolhi; porém é necessário que se cumpra o que diz a Escritura: O que come o pão comigo levantará o seu calcanhar contra mim (Ps. 40, 10).
19 And I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it has happened, you may believe that I am.	19 Desde agora vo-lo digo, antes que suceda, para que, quando suceder, creiais que sou eu (o Messias).
20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives anyone whom I send, receives me. And whoever receives me, receives him who sent me.”	20 Em verdade, em verdade, vos digo, que quem recebe aquele que eu enviar, a mim recebe, e o que me recebe, recebe aquele que me enviou."
21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit. And he bore witness by saying: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that one among you shall betray me.”	21 Tendo Jesus dito estas coisas, turbou-se em seu espírito e declarou abertamente: "Em verdade, em verdade, vos digo, que um de vós me há-de entregar."
22 Therefore, the disciples looked around at one another, uncertain about whom he spoke.	22 Olhavam, pois, os discípulos uns para os outros, não sabendo de quem falava.
23 And leaning against the bosom of Jesus was one of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved.	23 Ora um dos seus discípulos, ao qual Jesus amava, estava recostado sobre o seio de Jesus.
24 Therefore, Simon Peter motioned to this one and said to him, “Who is it that he is speaking about?”	24 A este fez Simão Pedro sinal, para lhe dizer: "De quem fala ele?"
25 And so, leaning against the chest of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who is it?”	25 Aquele discípulo, pois, tendo-se reclinado sobre o peito de Jesus, disse-lhe: "Senhor, quem é esse?"
26 Jesus responded, “It is he to whom I shall extend the dipped bread.” And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.	26 Jesus respondeu; "É aquele a quem eu der o bocado que vou molhar." Molhando, pois, o bocado, deu-o a Judas Iscariotes, filho de Simão.
27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”	27 Atrás do bocado, entrou nele Satanás. Jesus disse-lhe então: "O que queres fazer, faze-o depressa."
28 Now none of those sitting at table knew why he had said this to him.	28 Nenhum, porém, dos que estavam à mesa percebeu por que lhe dizia isto.
29 For some were thinking that, because Judas held the purse, that Jesus had told him, “Buy those things which are needed by us for the feast day,” or that he might give something to the needy.	29 Alguns, como Judas era o que tinha a bolsa, julgavam que Jesus lhe dissera: "Compra as coisas que nos são precisas para o dia da festa", ou: "Dá alguma coisa aos pobres."
30 Therefore, having accepted the morsel, he went out immediately. And it was night.	30 Ele, pois, tendo recebido o bocado, saiu logo. Era já noite.
31 Then, when he had gone out, Jesus said: “Now the Son of man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.	31 Depois que ele saiu, Jesus disse: "Agora é glorificado o Filho do homem, e Deus é glorificado nele.
32 If God has been glorified in him, then God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him without delay.	32 Se Deus foi glorificado nele, também Deus o glorificará em si mesmo; e glorificá-lo-á sem demora.
33 Little sons, for a brief while, I am with you. You shall seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go,’ so also I say to you now.	33 Filhinhos já pouco tempo estou convosco. Buscar-me-eis, mas, assim como disse aos Judeus: Para onde eu vou, vós não podeis vir, também a vós o digo agora.
34 I give you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also must you love one another.	34 Dou-vos um novo mandamento: Que vos ameis uns aos outros, que, assim como vos amei, vos ameis também uns aos outros.
35 By this, all shall recognize that you are my disciples: if you will have love for one another.”	35 Nisto conhecerão todos que sois meus discípulos, se tiverdes amor uns aos outros."
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus responded: “Where I am going, you are not able to follow me now. But you shall follow afterward.”	36 Simão Pedro disse-lhe: "Senhor, para onde vais tu?" Jesus respondeu-lhe: "Para onde eu vou, não podes tu agora seguir-me, mas seguir-me-ás mais tarde."
37 Peter said to him: “Why am I unable to follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”	37 Pedro disse-lhe: "Porque não posso eu seguir-te agora? Darei a minha vida por ti."
38 Jesus answered him: “You will lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the rooster will not crow, until you deny me three times.”	38 Jesus respondeu-lhe:"Darás a tua vida por mim? Em verdade, em verdade, te digo: Não cantará o galo sem que me tenhas negado três vezes.
