1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word.	1 Im Anfang war der Logos - das Wort, und das Wort war bei Gott, und Gott war das Wort.
2 He was with God in the beginning.	2 Dieses war im Anfang bei Gott.
3 All things were made through Him, and nothing that was made was made without Him.	3 Alles ist durch dieses geworden, und ohne es wurde auch nicht eines von dem, was geworden.
4 Life was in Him, and Life was the light of men.	4 In ihm war das Leben, und das Leben war das Licht der Menschen.
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.	5 Das Licht leuchtet in der Finsternis, und die Finsternis hat es nicht ergriffen.
6 There was a man sent by God, whose name was John.	6 Ein Mann trat auf, gesandt von Gott, sein Name war Johannes.
7 He arrived as a witness to offer testimony about the Light, so that all would believe through him.	7 Dieser kam zum Zeugnis, daß er zeuge von dem Lichte, damit alle zum Glauben kämen durch ihn.
8 He was not the Light, but he was to offer testimony about the Light.	8 Nicht war er selber das Licht, sondern zeugen sollte er vom Lichte.
9 The true Light, which illuminates every man, was coming into this world.	9 Es war das wahre Licht, das jeden Menschen erleuchtet, der in die Welt kommt.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not recognize him.	10 In der Welt war er, und die Welt ist geworden durch ihn, doch die Welt erkannte ihn nicht.
11 He went to his own, and his own did not accept him.	11 In das Seine kam er, doch die Seinen nahmen ihn nicht auf.
12 Yet whoever did accept him, those who believed in his name, he gave them the power to become the sons of God.	12 Allen aber, die ihn aufnahmen, gab er Vollmacht, Kinder Gottes zu werden, denen, die glauben an seinen Namen,
13 These are born, not of blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.	13 die nicht aus dem Blute und nicht aus dem Wollen des Fleisches und nicht aus dem Wollen des Mannes, sondern aus Gott geboren sind.
14 And the Word became flesh, and he lived among us, and we saw his glory, glory like that of an only-begotten son from the Father, full of grace and truth.	14 Und das Wort wurde Fleisch und wohnte unter uns, und wir schauten seine Herrlichkeit, eine Herrlichkeit als des Eingeborenen vom Vater, voll Gnade und Wahrheit.
15 John offers testimony about him, and he cries out, saying: “This is the one about whom I said: ‘He who is to come after me, has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”	15 Johannes gab Zeugnis von ihm und rief: "Dieser war es, von dem ich sagte: Der nach mir kommt, ist mir voraus, weil er eher war als ich."
16 And from his fullness, we all have received, even grace for grace.	16 Von seiner Fülle haben wir ja alle empfangen, Gnade über Gnade.
17 For the law was given though Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.	17 Denn das Gesetz wurde durch Moses gegeben, die Gnade und Wahrheit kam durch Jesus Christus.
18 No one ever saw God; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he himself has described him.	18 Niemand hat Gott je gesehen; der eingeborene Sohn, der an der Brust des Vaters ruht, er hat Kunde gebracht.
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him, so that they might ask him, “Who are you?”	19 Dieses ist das Zeugnis des Johannes, als die Juden von Jerusalem Priester und Leviten zu ihm sandten, um ihn zu fragen: "Wer bist du?"
20 And he confessed it and did not deny it; and what he confessed was: “I am not the Christ.”	20 Und er bekannte und verhehlte nicht, er bekannte: "Ich bin nicht der Messias!"
21 And they questioned him: “Then what are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”	21 Und sie fragten ihn: "Was dann? Bist du Elias?" Er sprach: "Ich bin es nicht." "Bist du der Prophet?" Er antwortete: "Nein!"
22 Therefore, they said to him: “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”	22 Da sagten sie zu ihm: "Wer bist du?, damit wir denen, die uns gesandt haben, Antwort bringen. Was sagst du von dir selbst?"
23 He said, “I am a voice crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”	23 Er sprach: "Ich bin die Stimme eines Rufers in der Wüste: "Richtet den Weg des Herrn", wie der Prophet Isaias gesagt hat" (Is 40,3).
24 And some of those who had been sent were from among the Pharisees.	24 Und es waren Abgesandte aus dem Kreis der Pharisäer,
25 And they questioned him and said to him, “Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?”	25 und sie fragten ihn: "Was taufst du denn, wenn du nicht der Messias bist noch Elias noch der Prophet?"
26 John answered them by saying: “I baptize with water. But in your midst stands one, whom you do not know.	26 Johannes erwiderte ihnen: "Ich taufe mit Wasser; mitten unter euch steht der, den ihr nicht kennt,
27 The same is he who is to come after me, who has been placed ahead of me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen.”	27 der nach mir Kommende [, der mir voraus ist], dem die Schuhriemen zu lösen, ich nicht würdig bin."
28 These things happened in Bethania, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.	28 Das ist zu Bethanien geschehen, jenseits des Jordan, wo Johannes war und taufte.
29 On the next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and so he said: “Behold, the Lamb of God. Behold, he who takes away the sin of the world.	29 Tags darauf sah er Jesus auf sich zukommen und sprach: "Seht das Lamm Gottes, das hinwegnimmt die Sünde der Welt!
30 This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me arrives a man, who has been placed ahead of me, because he existed before me.’	30 Er ist es, von dem ich sagte: Nach mir kommt einer, der mir voraus ist, weil er eher war als ich.
31 And I did not know him. Yet it is for this reason that I come baptizing with water: so that he may be made manifest in Israel.”	31 Ich kannte ihn nicht; doch daß er Israel offenbar werde, dazu kam ich und taufe mit Wasser."
32 And John offered testimony, saying: “For I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove; and he remained upon him.	32 Und Johannes bezeugte: "Ich sah den Geist wie eine Taube vom Himmel herniederkommen, und er blieb auf ihm.
33 And I did not know him. But he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: ‘He over whom you will see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’	33 Ich kannte ihn nicht; doch der mich gesandt hat, zu taufen mit Wasser, er sagte mir: Auf wen du den Geist herniederkommen und auf ihm bleiben siehst, der ist es, der tauft mit Heiligem Geist.
34 And I saw, and I gave testimony: that this one is the Son of God.”	34 Und ich habe gesehen und habe bezeugt: Dieser ist der Sohn Gottes."
35 The next day again, John was standing with two of his disciples.	35 Tags darauf stand Johannes wieder da mit zwei von seinen Jüngern,
36 And catching sight of Jesus walking, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”	36 und er blickte auf Jesus, der vorüberging, und sagte: "Seht das Lamm Gottes!"
37 And two disciples were listening to him speaking. And they followed Jesus.	37 Die zwei Jünger hörten, wie er das sagte, und folgten Jesus.
38 Then Jesus, turning around and seeing them following him, said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi (which means in translation, Teacher), where do you live?”	38 Jesus wandte sich um, und als er sie nachkommen sah, sprach er zu ihnen: "Was sucht ihr?" Sie sagten zu ihm: "Rabbi" - das heißt übersetzt: Meister -, "wo wohnst du?"
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about the tenth hour.	39 Er sprach zu ihnen: "Kommt, ihr werdet sehen!" Sie gingen mit und sahen, wo er wohnte, und blieben jenen Tag bei ihm. Es war um die zehnte Stunde.
40 And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard about him from John and had followed him.	40 Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, war einer von den beiden, die es von Johannes gehört hatten und ihm gefolgt waren.
41 First, he found his brother Simon, and he said to him, “We have found the Messiah,” (which is translated as the Christ).	41 Dieser traf zuerst seinen Bruder Simon und sagte zu ihm: "Wir haben den Messias" - das heißt übersetzt: Christus - "gefunden."
42 And he led him to Jesus. And Jesus, gazing at him, said: “You are Simon, son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas,” (which is translated as Peter).	42 Und er führte ihn zu Jesus. Jesus blickte ihn an und sprach: "Du bist Simon, der Sohn des Johannes; du sollst Kephas genannt werden" - das heißt übersetzt: Petrus (Fels).
43 On the next day, he wanted to go into Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”	43 Tags darauf wollte er nach Galiläa aufbrechen und traf den Philippus. Und Jesus sagte zu ihm: "Folge mir!"
44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.	44 Philippus war aus Bethsaida, der Stadt des Andreas und Petrus.
45 Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”	45 Philippus traf den Nathanael und sagte zu ihm: "Von dem Moses schrieb im Gesetz und die Propheten, ihn haben wir gefunden: Jesus, den Sohn Josephs von Nazareth."
46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good be from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”	46 Nathanael aber entgegnete ihm: "Kann denn aus Nazareth etwas Gutes kommen?" Philippus sagte zu ihm: "Komm und sieh!"
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, and he said about him, “Behold, an Israelite in whom truly there is no deceit.”	47 Jesus sah den Nathanael zu sich herkommen und sagte zu ihm: "Seht, wahrhaft ein Israelit, an dem kein Falsch ist!"
48 Nathanael said to him, “From where do you know me?” Jesus responded and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”	48 Da sprach Nathanael zu ihm: "Woher kennst du mich?" Jesus antwortete ihm: "Ehe Philippus dich rief, sah ich dich, als du unter dem Feigenbaum warst."
49 Nathanael answered him and said: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel.”	49 Nathanael erwiderte ihm: "Rabbi, du bist der Sohn Gottes, du bist König von Israel!"
50 Jesus responded and said to him: “Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, you believe. Greater things than these, you will see.”	50 Jesus antwortete ihm: "Weil ich dir sagte, daß ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum sah, glaubst du? Größeres als dies wirst du sehen."
51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the Angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man.”	51 Und er sprach zu ihm: "Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ihr werdet den Himmel offen sehen und die Engel Gottes auf- und niedersteigen über dem Menschensohn."
