Then, on the first Sabbath, at very first light, they went to the tomb, carrying the aromatic spices that they had prepared.1 Prima autem sabbatorum, valde diluculo venerunt ad monumentum portantes,quae paraverant, aromata.
And they found the stone rolled back from the tomb.2 Et invenerunt lapidem revolutum a monumento;
And upon entering, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3 etingressae non invenerunt corpus Domini Iesu.
And it happened that, while their minds were still confused about this, behold, two men stood beside them, in shining apparel.4 Et factum est, dum mentehaesitarent de isto, ecce duo viri steterunt secus illas in veste fulgenti.
Then, since they were afraid and were turning their faces toward the ground, these two said to them: “Why do you seek the living with the dead?5 Cum timerent autem et declinarent vultum in terram, dixerunt ad illas: “ Quidquaeritis viventem cum mortuis?
He is not here, for he has risen. Recall how he spoke to you, when he was still in Galilee,6 Non est hic, sed surrexit. Recordaminiqualiter locutus est vobis, cum adhuc in Galilaea esset,
saying: ‘For the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ ”7 dicens: “OportetFilium hominis tradi in manus hominum peccatorum et crucifigi et die tertiaresurgere” ”.
And they called to mind his words.8 Et recordatae sunt verborum eius
And returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven, and to all the others.9 et regressae a monumentonuntiaverunt haec omnia illis Undecim et ceteris omnibus.
Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women who were with them, who told these things to the Apostles.10 Erat autem MariaMagdalene et Ioanna et Maria Iacobi; et ceterae cum eis dicebant ad apostoloshaec.
But these words seemed to them a delusion. And so they did not believe them.11 Et visa sunt ante illos sicut deliramentum verba ista, et non credebantillis.
But Peter, rising up, ran to the tomb. And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths positioned alone, and he went away wondering to himself about what had happened.12 Petrus autem surgens cucurrit ad monumentum et procumbens videtlinteamina sola; et rediit ad sua mirans, quod factum fuerat.
And behold, two of them went out, on the same day, to a town named Emmaus, which was the distance of sixty stadia from Jerusalem.13 Et ecce duo ex illis ibant ipsa die in castellum, quod erat in spatiostadiorum sexaginta ab Ierusalem nomine Emmaus;
And they spoke to one another about all of these things that had occurred.14 et ipsi loquebantur adinvicem de his omnibus, quae acciderant.
And it happened that, while they were speculating and questioning within themselves, Jesus himself, drawing near, traveled with them.15 Et factum est, dum fabularentur etsecum quaererent, et ipse Iesus appropinquans ibat cum illis;
But their eyes were restrained, so that they would not recognize him.16 oculi autemillorum tenebantur, ne eum agnoscerent.
And he said to them, “What are these words, which you are discussing with one another, as you walk and are sad?”17 Et ait ad illos: “ Qui sunt hisermones, quos confertis ad invicem ambulantes? ”. Et steterunt tristes.
And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, responded by saying to him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”18 Etrespondens unus, cui nomen Cleopas, dixit ei: “ Tu solus peregrinus es inIerusalem et non cognovisti, quae facta sunt in illa his diebus? ”.
And he said to them, “What things?” And they said, “About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a noble prophet, powerful in works and in words, before God and all the people.19 Quibusille dixit: “ Quae? ”. Et illi dixerunt ei: “ De Iesu Nazareno, qui fuitvir propheta, potens in opere et sermone coram Deo et omni populo;
And how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death. And they crucified him.20 et quomodoeum tradiderunt summi sacerdotes et principes nostri in damnationem mortis etcrucifixerunt eum.
But we were hoping that he would be the Redeemer of Israel. And now, on top of all this, today is the third day since these things have happened.21 Nos autem sperabamus, quia ipse esset redempturus Israel;at nunc super haec omnia tertia dies hodie quod haec facta sunt.
Then, too, certain women from among us terrified us. For before daytime, they were at the tomb,22 Sed etmulieres quaedam ex nostris terruerunt nos, quae ante lucem fuerunt admonumentum
and, having not found his body, they returned, saying that they had even seen a vision of Angels, who said that he is alive.23 et, non invento corpore eius, venerunt dicentes se etiam visionemangelorum vidisse, qui dicunt eum vivere.
And some of us went out to the tomb. And they found it just as the women had said. But truly, they did not find him.”24 Et abierunt quidam ex nostris admonumentum et ita invenerunt, sicut mulieres dixerunt, ipsum vero non viderunt”.
And he said to them: “How foolish and reluctant in heart you are, to believe everything that has been spoken by the Prophets!25 Et ipse dixit ad eos: “ O stulti et tardi corde ad credendum in omnibus,quae locuti sunt Prophetae!
Was not the Christ required to suffer these things, and so enter into his glory?”26 Nonne haec oportuit pati Christum et intrare ingloriam suam? ”.
And beginning from Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them, in all the Scriptures, the things that were about him.27 Et incipiens a Moyse et omnibus Prophetis interpretabaturillis in omnibus Scripturis, quae de ipso erant.
And they drew near to the town were they were going. And he conducted himself so as to go on further.28 Et appropinquaveruntcastello, quo ibant, et ipse se finxit longius ire.
But they were insistent with him, saying, “Remain with us, because it is toward evening and now daylight is declining.” And so he entered with them.29 Et coegerunt illumdicentes: “ Mane nobiscum, quoniam advesperascit, et inclinata est iam dies”. Et intravit, ut maneret cum illis.
And it happened that, while he was at table with them, he took bread, and he blessed and broke it, and he extended it to them.30 Et factum est, dum recumberet cumillis, accepit panem et benedixit ac fregit et porrigebat illis.
And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their eyes.31 Et apertisunt oculi eorum, et cognoverunt eum; et ipse evanuit ab eis.
And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us, while he was speaking on the way, and when he opened the Scriptures to us?”32 Et dixerunt adinvicem: “ Nonne cor nostrum ardens erat in nobis, dum loqueretur nobis in viaet aperiret nobis Scripturas? ”.
And rising up at that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,33 Et surgentes eadem hora regressi sunt inIerusalem et invenerunt congregatos Undecim et eos, qui cum ipsis erant,
saying: “In truth, the Lord has risen, and he has appeared to Simon.”34 dicentes: “ Surrexit Dominus vere et apparuit Simoni ”.
And they explained the things that were done on the way, and how they had recognized him at the breaking of the bread.35 Et ipsinarrabant, quae gesta erant in via, et quomodo cognoverunt eum in fractionepanis.
Then, while they were talking about these things, Jesus stood in their midst, And he said to them: “Peace be with you. It is I. Do not be afraid.”36 Dum haec autem loquuntur, ipse stetit in medio eorum et dicit eis: “ Paxvobis! ”.
Yet truly, they were very disturbed and terrified, supposing that they saw a spirit.37 Conturbati vero et conterriti existimabant se spiritum videre.
And he said to them: “Why are you disturbed, and why do these thoughts rise up in your hearts?38 Et dixit eis: “ Quid turbati estis, et quare cogitationes ascendunt in cordavestra?
See my hands and feet, that it is I myself. Look and touch. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”39 Videte manus meas et pedes meos, quia ipse ego sum! Palpate me etvidete, quia spiritus carnem et ossa non habet, sicut me videtis habere ”.
And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.40 Et cum hoc dixisset, ostendit eis manus et pedes.
Then, while they were still in disbelief and in wonder out of joy, he said, “Do you have anything here to eat?”41 Adhuc autem illis noncredentibus prae gaudio et mirantibus, dixit eis: “ Habetis hic aliquid, quodmanducetur? ”.
And they offered him a piece of roasted fish and a honeycomb.42 At illi obtulerunt ei partem piscis assi.
And when he had eaten these in their sight, taking up what was left, he gave it to them.43 Et sumens,coram eis manducavit.
And he said to them: “These are the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you, because all things must be fulfilled which are written in the law of Moses, and in the Prophets, and in the Psalms about me.”44 Et dixit ad eos: “ Haec sunt verba, quae locutus sum ad vos, cum adhucessem vobiscum, quoniam necesse est impleri omnia, quae scripta sunt in LegeMoysis et Prophetis et Psalmis de me ”.
Then he opened their mind, so that they might understand the Scriptures.45 Tunc aperuit illis sensum, utintellegerent Scripturas.
And he said to them: “For so it is written, and so it was necessary, for the Christ to suffer and to rise up from the dead on the third day,46 Et dixit eis: “ Sic scriptum est, Christum patiet resurgere a mortuis die tertia,
and, in his name, for repentance and the remission of sins to be preached, among all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.47 et praedicari in nomine eius paenitentiamin remissionem peccatorum in omnes gentes, incipientibus ab Ierusalem.
And you are witnesses of these things.48 Vosestis testes horum.
And I am sending the Promise of my Father upon you. But you must stay in the city, until such time as you are clothed with power from on high.”49 Et ecce ego mitto promissum Patris mei in vos; vos autemsedete in civitate, quoadusque induamini virtutem ex alto ”.
Then he led them out as far as Bethania. And lifting up his hands, he blessed them.50 Eduxit autem eos foras usque in Bethaniam et, elevatis manibus suis,benedixit eis.
And it happened that, while he was blessing them, he withdrew from them, and he was carried up into heaven.51 Et factum est, dum benediceret illis, recessit ab eis etferebatur in caelum.
And worshiping, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.52 Et ipsi adoraverunt eum et regressi sunt in Ierusalemcum gaudio magno
And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.53 et erant semper in templo benedicentes Deum.
