1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:	1 E il Signore parlò a Mosè, dicendo:
2 “First, avenge the sons of Israel from the Midianites, and then you shall be gathered to your people.”	2 « Prima vendica i figli d'Israele da Madianiti, e poi andrai a raggiungere tuoi padri ».
3 And immediately Moses said: “Arm the men among you for a battle, so that they may be able to fulfill the retribution of the Lord on the Midianites.	3 E Mosè disse subito: « Arma te per la battaglia alcuni vostri uomini che possan fare la vendetta del Signore sopra i Madianiti.
4 Let one thousand men be chosen from each tribe of Israel, who shall be sent to war.”	4 Da ogni tribù d'Israele siano scelti mille uominda mandarsi a questa guerra ».
5 And they gave one thousand from each tribe, that is, twelve thousand foot soldiers for battle.	5 Dettero dunque mille uomini per tribù, cioè dodici mila uomini pronti a combattere
6 And Moses sent them with Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest; also, he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.	6 Mosè li mandò con Finees figlio di Eleazaro sacerdote, al quale diede i vasi santi e le trombe per sonare.
7 And when they had fought against the Midianites and had prevailed, they killed all the men.	7 Essi combatterono contro i Madianiti, e vintili ne uccisero tutti i maschi,
8 And they put to death by the sword their kings: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five leaders of the nation, and also Balaam the son of Beor.	8 e i loro re, Evi, Becem, Sur, Hur e Rebe, cinque principi di quella nazione, e uccisero colla spada anche Balaam figlio di Beor.
9 And they seized their women and little ones, and all their cattle, and all their goods; whatever they were able to have, they despoiled.	9 Presero poi le loro donne, i loro fanciulli, tutti i loro bestiami ed ogni loro bene, e saccheggiarono ogni loro avere:
10 Both their cities and their villages, as well as their fortresses, they burned.	10 Il fuoco consumò le città, i villaggi e i castelli.
11 And they carried away prey from everything that they had seized, both of men and of beasts.	11 E tolsero la preda e tutto quello che avevan preso d'uomini e di bestie,
12 And they led these to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to all the multitude of the sons of Israel. But the remainder of the articles they carried to the camp on the plains of Moab, next to the Jordan, opposite Jericho.	12 e lo condussero davanti a Mosè, ad Eleazaro sacerdote, e a tutta la moltitudine dei figli d'Israele, anche le altre cose che potevan servire le portarono agli accampamenti nelle pianure di Moab, vicino al Giordano, dirimpetto a Gerico.
13 Then Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the assembly went out to meet them beyond the camp.	13 Mosè, il sommo sacerdote Eleazaro e tutti i principi della sinagoga andarono loro incontro fuor degli accampamenti.
14 And Moses, being angry with the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions, who had arrived from the battle,	14 E Mosè, sdegnato contro i capi dell esercito, i tribuni e i centurioni che tornavano dalla guerra,
15 said: “Why have you spared the females?	15 disse: « Perchè avete risparmiato le donne?
16 Are not these the ones who deceived the sons of Israel at the suggestion of Balaam, and who caused you betray the Lord by the sin of Peor, because of which the people also were struck down?	16 Non sono forse state esse che, a suggestione di Balaam, sedussero i figli d Israele, e vi fecero prevaricar contro il Signore col peccato di Fogor, che fu causa di flagelli anche al popolo?
17 Therefore, put to death all of them: whatever is of the male sex, even among the little ones, and cut the throats of those women who have known men by sexual relations.	17 Or dunque uccidete tutti i maschi anche di tenera età, e tutte le donne che han conosciuto l'uomo,
18 But the young girls, and all female virgins, reserve for yourselves.	18 serbate invece per voi le fanciulle e tutte le donne vergini.
19 And remain beyond the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed a man, or who has touched one that was killed, shall be purified on the third day and on the seventh day.	19 Restate per sette giorni fuori degli accampamenti; e chi avrà ucciso un uomo o toccato un cadavere si purifichi il terzo e il settimo giorno.
20 And all of the spoils, whether it is a garment, or a vessel, or another useful thing, made from the pelts or hair of goats, or from wood, shall be expiated.”	20 E di ciò che avete preso sarà purificata ogni veste, ogni vaso, ogni utensile fatto di pelli di capra, o di peli, o di legno ».
21 Likewise, Eleazar the priest spoke in this manner to the men of the army who had fought: “This is the precept of the law, which the Lord has commanded Moses:	21 Parlò ai soldati che erano stati alla battaglia anche il sommo sacerdote Eleazaro, e disse: « Ecco l'ordine della legge data dal Signore a Mosè:
22 Gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin,	22 L'oro, l'argento, il rame, il ferro, il piombo, lo stagno,
23 and all that may be able to pass through fire, shall be purified by fire. But whatever is not able to sustain fire shall be sanctified with the waters of expiation.	23 e tutto ciò che può passar per le fiamme, sia purificato col fuoco; ma tutto ciò che non può reggere al fuoco sia purificato coll'acqua di espiazione.
24 And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and, after having been purified, you shall enter the camp.”	24 Vi laverete le vesti al settimo giorno e, purificati, entrerete negli accampamenti ».
25 And the Lord also said to Moses:	25 Disse poi il Signore a Mosè:
26 “Take the sum of those things which were captured, from man even to beast, you and Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the common people.	26 « Tu, il sacerdote Eleazaro e i principi del popolo fate il conto di ciò che è stato preso, della gente e del bestiame;
27 And you shall divide the prey equally, among those who went out to war and fought, and among the remainder of the multitude.	27 poi dividi la preda in parti uguali tra quelli cne sono andati alla guerra a combattere e tutto il resto della moltitudine.
28 And you shall separate a portion for the Lord from the portion of those who fought and were in the battle: one soul out of five hundred, as much from humans, as from oxen and donkeys and sheep.	28 E dalla parte di coloro che arndarono alla guerra a combattere sepaerai la parte del Signore: un capo ogni cinquecento, sia degli uomini che dei buoi, degli asini e delle pecore,
29 And you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, because these are the first-fruits of the Lord.	29 e la darai al sacerdote Eleazaro, perchè queste son le primizie del Signore.
30 Likewise, from the half of the portion belonging to the sons of Israel, you shall receive the fiftieth head of humans, and of oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and of all living things, and you shall give these to the Levites who stand watch over the care of the tabernacle of the Lord.”	30 Dell'altra parte poi che appartiene ai figli d'Israele prenderai un capo ogni cinquanta, degli uomini, dei buoi, degli asini, delle pecore e di tutti gli animali, e lo darai ai leviti che vegliano alla custodia del Tabernacolo del Signore ».
31 And Moses and Eleazar did just as the Lord had instructed.	31 E Mosè ed Eleazaro fecero come il Signore aveva comandato.
32 Now the prey which the army had seized was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,	32 Or la preda che l'esercito aveva fatta fu di seicentosettanta cinque mila pecore,
33 seventy-two thousand oxen,	33 settantadue mila buoi,
34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,	34 sessant'un mila asini,
35 and thirty-two thousand human lives, of the female sex, who had not known men.	35 trentadue mila donne che non avevan conosciuto uomo.
36 And one half of the portion was given to those who had been in the battle: three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep.	36 La metà fu data a chi era stato alla battaglia: delle trecentotrentasette mila cinquecento pecore
37 From these, for the portion of the Lord, there were accounted: six hundred seventy-five sheep;	37 ne furon messe a parte pel Signore seicentosettantacinque;
38 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen, seventy-two oxen;	38 dei trentasei mila buoi, settantadue;
39 from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, sixty-one donkeys.	39 dei trenta mila cinquecento asini, sessant'uno;
40 From the sixteen thousand human souls, there fell to the portion of the Lord thirty-two souls.	40 delle sedici mila persone toccarono trentadue alla parte del Signore.
41 And Moses delivered the number of the first-fruits of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, just as had been commanded of him,	41 E Mosè, come gli era stato comandato, diede al sacerdote Eleazaro il numero delle primizie del Signore,
42 from the one half portion belonging to the sons of Israel, which he had separated from the portion of those who had been in the battle.	42 prelevandolo su quella metà che era stata assegnata ai figli d'Israele stati alla guerra.
43 Yet truly, from the one half portion which fell to the remainder of the multitude, that is, from the three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	43 E sull'altra metà toccata al restante della moltitudine, cioè sulle trecentotrentasette mila cinquecento pecore,
44 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen,	44 sui trentasei mila buoi,

46 and from the sixteen thousand persons,	46 e sulle sedici mila persone,
47 Moses took the fiftieth head, and gave it to the Levites who stand watch at the tabernacle of the Lord, just as the Lord had instructed.	47 Mosè tolse un capo ogni cinquanta e li diede ai leviti, che vegliavano nel Tabernacolo del Signore, come il Signore aveva ordinato.
48 And when the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions had approached Moses, they said:	48 E i capi dell'esercito, i tribuni e i centurioni s'avvicinarono a Mosè e gli dissero:
49 “We, your servants, have taken a census of the number of the fighting men, whom we had under our hand, and indeed not one was lacking.	49 « Noi tuoi servi abbiamo fatto il conto dei combattenti che avevamo sotto di noi: non ne manca nemmeno uno.
50 For this reason, we offer as gifts to the Lord whatever gold each one was able to find amid the spoils, in anklets and arm bands, rings and bracelets, and little chains, so that you may intercede for us to the Lord.”	50 E quindi offriamo in dono al Signore ciascuno ciò che ha trovato d'oro nella preda: catenelle, braccialetti, anelli, orecchini e vezzi, affinchè tu preghi il Signore per noi ».
51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received all the gold in its various kinds,	51 E Mosè e il sacerdote Eleazaro ricévettero l'oro in diverse specie:
52 weighing sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels, from the tribunes and the centurions.	52 quello ricevuto dai tribuni e dai centurioni pesava sedici mila settecento cinquanta sicli.
53 For whatever each one had taken away in the spoils was his own.	53 Ciascuno poi tenne per sè le altre cose predate nel saccheggio.
54 And having been accepted, they took it into the tabernacle of the testimony, as a memorial of the sons of Israel before the Lord.	54 L'oro fu preso e portato nel Tabernacolo della testimonianza, come un monumento dei figli d'Israele davanti al Signore.
