1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:	1 וידבר יהוה אל משה לאמר
2 “First, avenge the sons of Israel from the Midianites, and then you shall be gathered to your people.”	2 נקם נקמת בני ישראל מאת המדינים אחר תאסף אל עמיך
3 And immediately Moses said: “Arm the men among you for a battle, so that they may be able to fulfill the retribution of the Lord on the Midianites.	3 וידבר משה אל העם לאמר החלצו מאתכם אנשים לצבא ויהיו על מדין לתת נקמת יהוה במדין
4 Let one thousand men be chosen from each tribe of Israel, who shall be sent to war.”	4 אלף למטה אלף למטה לכל מטות ישראל תשלחו לצבא
5 And they gave one thousand from each tribe, that is, twelve thousand foot soldiers for battle.	5 וימסרו מאלפי ישראל אלף למטה שנים עשר אלף חלוצי צבא
6 And Moses sent them with Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest; also, he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.	6 וישלח אתם משה אלף למטה לצבא אתם ואת פינחס בן אלעזר הכהן לצבא וכלי הקדש וחצצרות התרועה בידו
7 And when they had fought against the Midianites and had prevailed, they killed all the men.	7 ויצבאו על מדין כאשר צוה יהוה את משה ויהרגו כל זכר
8 And they put to death by the sword their kings: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five leaders of the nation, and also Balaam the son of Beor.	8 ואת מלכי מדין הרגו על חלליהם את אוי ואת רקם ואת צור ואת חור ואת רבע חמשת מלכי מדין ואת בלעם בן בעור הרגו בחרב
9 And they seized their women and little ones, and all their cattle, and all their goods; whatever they were able to have, they despoiled.	9 וישבו בני ישראל את נשי מדין ואת טפם ואת כל בהמתם ואת כל מקנהם ואת כל חילם בזזו
10 Both their cities and their villages, as well as their fortresses, they burned.	10 ואת כל עריהם במושבתם ואת כל טירתם שרפו באש
11 And they carried away prey from everything that they had seized, both of men and of beasts.	11 ויקחו את כל השלל ואת כל המלקוח באדם ובבהמה
12 And they led these to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to all the multitude of the sons of Israel. But the remainder of the articles they carried to the camp on the plains of Moab, next to the Jordan, opposite Jericho.	12 ויבאו אל משה ואל אלעזר הכהן ואל עדת בני ישראל את השבי ואת המלקוח ואת השלל אל המחנה אל ערבת מואב אשר על ירדן ירחו
13 Then Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the assembly went out to meet them beyond the camp.	13 ויצאו משה ואלעזר הכהן וכל נשיאי העדה לקראתם אל מחוץ למחנה
14 And Moses, being angry with the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions, who had arrived from the battle,	14 ויקצף משה על פקודי החיל שרי האלפים ושרי המאות הבאים מצבא המלחמה
15 said: “Why have you spared the females?	15 ויאמר אליהם משה החייתם כל נקבה
16 Are not these the ones who deceived the sons of Israel at the suggestion of Balaam, and who caused you betray the Lord by the sin of Peor, because of which the people also were struck down?	16 הן הנה היו לבני ישראל בדבר בלעם למסר מעל ביהוה על דבר פעור ותהי המגפה בעדת יהוה
17 Therefore, put to death all of them: whatever is of the male sex, even among the little ones, and cut the throats of those women who have known men by sexual relations.	17 ועתה הרגו כל זכר בטף וכל אשה ידעת איש למשכב זכר הרגו
18 But the young girls, and all female virgins, reserve for yourselves.	18 וכל הטף בנשים אשר לא ידעו משכב זכר החיו לכם
19 And remain beyond the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed a man, or who has touched one that was killed, shall be purified on the third day and on the seventh day.	19 ואתם חנו מחוץ למחנה שבעת ימים כל הרג נפש וכל נגע בחלל תתחטאו ביום השלישי וביום השביעי אתם ושביכם
20 And all of the spoils, whether it is a garment, or a vessel, or another useful thing, made from the pelts or hair of goats, or from wood, shall be expiated.”	20 וכל בגד וכל כלי עור וכל מעשה עזים וכל כלי עץ תתחטאו
21 Likewise, Eleazar the priest spoke in this manner to the men of the army who had fought: “This is the precept of the law, which the Lord has commanded Moses:	21 ויאמר אלעזר הכהן אל אנשי הצבא הבאים למלחמה זאת חקת התורה אשר צוה יהוה את משה
22 Gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin,	22 אך את הזהב ואת הכסף את הנחשת את הברזל את הבדיל ואת העפרת
23 and all that may be able to pass through fire, shall be purified by fire. But whatever is not able to sustain fire shall be sanctified with the waters of expiation.	23 כל דבר אשר יבא באש תעבירו באש וטהר אך במי נדה יתחטא וכל אשר לא יבא באש תעבירו במים
24 And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and, after having been purified, you shall enter the camp.”	24 וכבסתם בגדיכם ביום השביעי וטהרתם ואחר תבאו אל המחנה
25 And the Lord also said to Moses:	25 ויאמר יהוה אל משה לאמר
26 “Take the sum of those things which were captured, from man even to beast, you and Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the common people.	26 שא את ראש מלקוח השבי באדם ובבהמה אתה ואלעזר הכהן וראשי אבות העדה
27 And you shall divide the prey equally, among those who went out to war and fought, and among the remainder of the multitude.	27 וחצית את המלקוח בין תפשי המלחמה היצאים לצבא ובין כל העדה
28 And you shall separate a portion for the Lord from the portion of those who fought and were in the battle: one soul out of five hundred, as much from humans, as from oxen and donkeys and sheep.	28 והרמת מכס ליהוה מאת אנשי המלחמה היצאים לצבא אחד נפש מחמש המאות מן האדם ומן הבקר ומן החמרים ומן הצאן
29 And you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, because these are the first-fruits of the Lord.	29 ממחציתם תקחו ונתתה לאלעזר הכהן תרומת יהוה
30 Likewise, from the half of the portion belonging to the sons of Israel, you shall receive the fiftieth head of humans, and of oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and of all living things, and you shall give these to the Levites who stand watch over the care of the tabernacle of the Lord.”	30 וממחצת בני ישראל תקח אחד אחז מן החמשים מן האדם מן הבקר מן החמרים ומן הצאן מכל הבהמה ונתתה אתם ללוים שמרי משמרת משכן יהוה
31 And Moses and Eleazar did just as the Lord had instructed.	31 ויעש משה ואלעזר הכהן כאשר צוה יהוה את משה
32 Now the prey which the army had seized was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,	32 ויהי המלקוח יתר הבז אשר בזזו עם הצבא צאן שש מאות אלף ושבעים אלף וחמשת אלפים
33 seventy-two thousand oxen,	33 ובקר שנים ושבעים אלף
34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,	34 וחמרים אחד וששים אלף
35 and thirty-two thousand human lives, of the female sex, who had not known men.	35 ונפש אדם מן הנשים אשר לא ידעו משכב זכר כל נפש שנים ושלשים אלף
36 And one half of the portion was given to those who had been in the battle: three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep.	36 ותהי המחצה חלק היצאים בצבא מספר הצאן שלש מאות אלף ושלשים אלף ושבעת אלפים וחמש מאות
37 From these, for the portion of the Lord, there were accounted: six hundred seventy-five sheep;	37 ויהי המכס ליהוה מן הצאן שש מאות חמש ושבעים
38 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen, seventy-two oxen;	38 והבקר ששה ושלשים אלף ומכסם ליהוה שנים ושבעים
39 from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, sixty-one donkeys.	39 וחמרים שלשים אלף וחמש מאות ומכסם ליהוה אחד וששים
40 From the sixteen thousand human souls, there fell to the portion of the Lord thirty-two souls.	40 ונפש אדם ששה עשר אלף ומכסם ליהוה שנים ושלשים נפש
41 And Moses delivered the number of the first-fruits of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, just as had been commanded of him,	41 ויתן משה את מכס תרומת יהוה לאלעזר הכהן כאשר צוה יהוה את משה
42 from the one half portion belonging to the sons of Israel, which he had separated from the portion of those who had been in the battle.	42 וממחצית בני ישראל אשר חצה משה מן האנשים הצבאים
43 Yet truly, from the one half portion which fell to the remainder of the multitude, that is, from the three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,	43 ותהי מחצת העדה מן הצאן שלש מאות אלף ושלשים אלף שבעת אלפים וחמש מאות
44 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen,	44 ובקר ששה ושלשים אלף
45 and from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,	45 וחמרים שלשים אלף וחמש מאות
46 and from the sixteen thousand persons,	46 ונפש אדם ששה עשר אלף
47 Moses took the fiftieth head, and gave it to the Levites who stand watch at the tabernacle of the Lord, just as the Lord had instructed.	47 ויקח משה ממחצת בני ישראל את האחז אחד מן החמשים מן האדם ומן הבהמה ויתן אתם ללוים שמרי משמרת משכן יהוה כאשר צוה יהוה את משה
48 And when the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions had approached Moses, they said:	48 ויקרבו אל משה הפקדים אשר לאלפי הצבא שרי האלפים ושרי המאות
49 “We, your servants, have taken a census of the number of the fighting men, whom we had under our hand, and indeed not one was lacking.	49 ויאמרו אל משה עבדיך נשאו את ראש אנשי המלחמה אשר בידנו ולא נפקד ממנו איש
50 For this reason, we offer as gifts to the Lord whatever gold each one was able to find amid the spoils, in anklets and arm bands, rings and bracelets, and little chains, so that you may intercede for us to the Lord.”	50 ונקרב את קרבן יהוה איש אשר מצא כלי זהב אצעדה וצמיד טבעת עגיל וכומז לכפר על נפשתינו לפני יהוה
51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received all the gold in its various kinds,	51 ויקח משה ואלעזר הכהן את הזהב מאתם כל כלי מעשה
52 weighing sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels, from the tribunes and the centurions.	52 ויהי כל זהב התרומה אשר הרימו ליהוה ששה עשר אלף שבע מאות וחמשים שקל מאת שרי האלפים ומאת שרי המאות
53 For whatever each one had taken away in the spoils was his own.	53 אנשי הצבא בזזו איש לו
54 And having been accepted, they took it into the tabernacle of the testimony, as a memorial of the sons of Israel before the Lord.	54 ויקח משה ואלעזר הכהן את הזהב מאת שרי האלפים והמאות ויבאו אתו אל אהל מועד זכרון לבני ישראל לפני יהוה
