Sirach 46

1 Joshua, the son of Nun, was valiant in warfare; he was the successor of Moses among the prophets. He was great in accord with his name,	1 Forte in guerra fu Gesù figliuolo di Nave, successore di Mosè tra i profeti, che fu grande conforme al suo nome,
2 very great in the saving the elect of God. He fought against the insurgent enemies, so that he might obtain the inheritance for Israel.	2 grande per la salvezza degli eletti di Dio, per espugnare i nemici sollevatisi, per conquistare a Israele l'eredità.
3 What great glory he secured, by lifting up his hands and throwing his spears against the cities!	3 Qual gloria non si procacciò egli levando la sua mano e brandendo la lancia contro le città?
4 Who before him has stood so firmly? For the Lord himself led forward the enemies.	4 Chi prima di lui resistette così? Perchè il Signore stesso [gli] conduceva i nemici.
5 Was not the sun halted by his wrath, and one day made as if two?	5 Per mano sua non si fermò forse il sole, e un sol giorno diventò come due?
6 He called upon the Most High Power, when the enemies assailed him on every side. And the great and holy God answered him with hailstones of exceedingly great force.	6 Invocò l'Altissimo sovrano, mentre d'ogni parte lo stringevano i nemici; e l'esaudì Iddio grande e santo, con violenta grandine di pietre.
7 He made a violent assault against a hostile nation, and at his descent, he destroyed his adversaries,	7 Si scagliò contro il popolo nemico, e nella discesa sterminò gli avversari;
8 so that the nations would acknowledge his power: that it is not easy to fight against God. And he followed the Almighty.	8 perchè conoscessero le genti la potenza di lui, e come non è facile combattere contro Dio. Egli seguì docilmente l'Onnipotente,
9 And in the days of Moses, he accomplished a work of mercy. He and Caleb, the son of Jephuneh, stood against the enemy, and forbid the people from sin, and broke their wicked murmuring.	9 e [già] a' tempi di Mosè aveva dato prova di pietà, egli e Caleb figliuolo di Jefone, nel far fronte al nemico, nell'allontanare il popolo dal peccato, e sedare la trista mormorazione;
10 And these two, having been appointed, were freed from peril, from foot soldiers numbering six hundred thousand, so as to lead them into their inheritance, into a land flowing with milk and honey.	10 [perciò] essi due soli furon risparmiati sui seicentomila fanti, per essere introdotti nel retaggio [promesso], nella terra che scorre latte e miele.
11 And the Lord gave strength to Caleb also, and his strength remained even in his old age, so that he ascended to the high places of the land, and his offspring obtained it as an inheritance.	11 E il Signore diede a Caleb la forza, e sino alla vecchiaia gli rimase tal forza, sì da raggiungere Paltò della regione, e la sua discendenza entrò in possesso dell'eredità.
12 This was so that all the sons of Israel would see that it is good to obey the holy God.	12 Affinchè vedessero tutti i figliuoli d'Israele, ch'è bene tener dietro al Signore.
13 Then there were the judges, each one called by name, whose heart was not corrupted. They did not turn away from the Lord,	13 E i Giudici, ciascuno per nome, quelli il cui cuore non fu sedotto, nè volsero le spalle al Signore,
14 so that their memory might be blessed, and their bones might spring forth from their place,	14 che la loro memoria sia in benedizione! Le loro ossa rifloriscan su dalla tomba,
15 and their name might remain forever, continuing in their sons, holy men of glory.	15 e il loro nome duri eterno, perpetuandosi ne' figli la gloria di quel santi uomini.
16 Samuel, prophet of the Lord, beloved by the Lord his God, established a new government, and he anointed leaders over his people.	16 Caro al Signore Dio suo, Samuele profeta del Signore; fondò il regno e mise principi a capo del suo popolo.
17 By the law of the Lord, he judged the congregation, and the God of Jacob saw it, and so, by his fidelity, he was proven to be a prophet.	17 Secondo la legge del Signore governò la comunità, e il Signore fermò lo sguardo su Giacobbe. Per la sua fedeltà si dimostrò profeta,
18 And he was known to be faithful in his words. For he saw the God of light.	18 e fu trovato fedele nella sua parola, perchè aveva veduto il Dio della luce.
19 And when fighting against the enemies, who stood against him on every side, he called upon the name of the Almighty Lord, with an offering of an inviolate lamb.	19 E Invocò il Signore onnipotente, mentre d'ogni parte lo stringevano i nemici, con l'oblazione d'un agnello immacolato.
20 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and with a great noise, he made his voice to be heard.	20 E tonò dal cielo il Signore, e con gran rimbombo fece udir la sua voce.
21 And he crushed the leaders of the Tyrians, and all the commanders of the Philistines.	21 E stritolò i principi de' Tiri, e tutti i capi de' Filistei.
22 And before the time of the end of his life in the world, he offered testimony in the sight of the Lord and of his Christ, that he had not taken a bribe from any flesh, not even so much as a shoe, and that no man made an accusation against him.	22 E prima di finir la sua vita e [addormentarsi nel sonno] dell'eternità, protestò dinanzi al Signore e al suo Unto, che niente danaro e neppur de' calzari non aveva preso da alcun vivente, e nessuno l'accusò.
23 And after this, he slept. And he made known to the king and revealed to him the end of his life. And he lifted up his voice from the earth in prophecy, to abolish the impiety of the people.	23 E ancor dopo la sua morte profetò, e annunziò al re la fine di sua vita: e levò la sua voce di sotto terra profetando, per distruggere l'empietà del popolo.
