Sirach 46

1 Joshua, the son of Nun, was valiant in warfare; he was the successor of Moses among the prophets. He was great in accord with his name,	1 Qu’il était vaillant à la guerre, ce Josué, fils de Noun qui remplaça Moïse comme prophète! Comme son nom le dit, il fut grand quand il s’agissait de libérer les élus de Dieu. Il tira vengeance des ennemis qui l’attaquaient et installa Israël dans son territoire.
2 very great in the saving the elect of God. He fought against the insurgent enemies, so that he might obtain the inheritance for Israel.	2 Comme il était glorieux lorsque, levant son bras, il frappait les villes de son épée!
3 What great glory he secured, by lifting up his hands and throwing his spears against the cities!	3 Qui donc avant lui avait fait face comme il fit? Il savait mener les combats du Seigneur.
4 Who before him has stood so firmly? For the Lord himself led forward the enemies.	4 N’est-ce pas sur son ordre que le soleil s’arrêta et qu’un seul jour dura autant que deux?
5 Was not the sun halted by his wrath, and one day made as if two?	5 Il invoqua le Très-Haut, le Puissant, alors que ses ennemis l’attaquaient de tous côtés, et le Maître suprême l’exauça en faisant pleuvoir des grêlons fantastiques.
6 He called upon the Most High Power, when the enemies assailed him on every side. And the great and holy God answered him with hailstones of exceedingly great force.	6 Josué fondit alors sur la nation ennemie, il rattrapa ses adversaires et les massacra dans la descente. C’est ainsi que les païens firent l’expérience de ses armes et comprirent qu’il combattait pour le Seigneur.
7 He made a violent assault against a hostile nation, and at his descent, he destroyed his adversaries,	7 Josué a toujours suivi le Puissant. Aux jours de Moïse déjà, avec Caleb fils de Yéfouné, ils avaient bien agi: ils s’étaient opposés à la multitude, cherchant à détourner le peuple du péché et à faire taire les murmures mauvais.
8 so that the nations would acknowledge his power: that it is not easy to fight against God. And he followed the Almighty.	8 C’est pourquoi tous deux survécurent, seuls parmi 600 000 hommes de guerre: le Seigneur les introduisit dans son héritage, dans la terre où coulent le lait et le miel.
9 And in the days of Moses, he accomplished a work of mercy. He and Caleb, the son of Jephuneh, stood against the enemy, and forbid the people from sin, and broke their wicked murmuring.	9 À Caleb le Seigneur accorda la force: elle lui resta jusque dans sa vieillesse. Il s’établit sur les hauteurs du pays et ses descendants conservèrent cet héritage après lui.
10 And these two, having been appointed, were freed from peril, from foot soldiers numbering six hundred thousand, so as to lead them into their inheritance, into a land flowing with milk and honey.	10 Tous les enfants d’Israël surent ainsi qu’il est bon de marcher à la suite du Seigneur.
11 And the Lord gave strength to Caleb also, and his strength remained even in his old age, so that he ascended to the high places of the land, and his offspring obtained it as an inheritance.	11 Puis vinrent les Juges, chacun avec sa propre renommée; leur cœur ne s’est pas vendu aux faux dieux, ils ne se sont pas détournés du Seigneur. Qu’ils soient bénis à jamais!
12 This was so that all the sons of Israel would see that it is good to obey the holy God.	12 Que leurs ossements refleurissent de leur tombe, que les fils de ces hommes illustres soient dignes du nom de leurs pères!
13 Then there were the judges, each one called by name, whose heart was not corrupted. They did not turn away from the Lord,	13 Samuel fut aimé de son Seigneur; comme prophète du Seigneur il établit la royauté et donna l’onction sainte aux chefs de son peuple.
14 so that their memory might be blessed, and their bones might spring forth from their place,	14 Il gouverna l’Assemblée selon la loi du Seigneur, et le Seigneur s’inquiéta pour Jacob.
15 and their name might remain forever, continuing in their sons, holy men of glory.	15 On reconnut qu’il était prophète, et qu’il ne trompait pas; quand ses paroles se réalisèrent on sut que ses visions étaient vraies.
16 Samuel, prophet of the Lord, beloved by the Lord his God, established a new government, and he anointed leaders over his people.	16 Quand l’ennemi le pressait de toute part, il invoqua le Seigneur Puissant et sacrifia un agneau de lait.
17 By the law of the Lord, he judged the congregation, and the God of Jacob saw it, and so, by his fidelity, he was proven to be a prophet.	17 Alors le Seigneur tonna du haut du ciel et fit entendre sa voix avec grand fracas.
18 And he was known to be faithful in his words. For he saw the God of light.	18 Samuel extermina les chefs ennemis et tous les princes des Philistins.
19 And when fighting against the enemies, who stood against him on every side, he called upon the name of the Almighty Lord, with an offering of an inviolate lamb.	19 Quand vint le temps de son sommeil éternel, il témoigna devant le Seigneur et son Oint: “Je n’ai rien pris à personne, ni argent, ni même une paire de sandales!” et personne ne l’accusa.
20 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and with a great noise, he made his voice to be heard.	20 Même après sa mort il prophétisa: du sein de la terre il éleva la voix pour annoncer au roi sa fin prochaine et dire que le Seigneur ferait payer au peuple sa faute.
21 And he crushed the leaders of the Tyrians, and all the commanders of the Philistines.
22 And before the time of the end of his life in the world, he offered testimony in the sight of the Lord and of his Christ, that he had not taken a bribe from any flesh, not even so much as a shoe, and that no man made an accusation against him.
23 And after this, he slept. And he made known to the king and revealed to him the end of his life. And he lifted up his voice from the earth in prophecy, to abolish the impiety of the people.
