Sirach 31

1 Watching for wealth consumes the flesh, and thinking about it takes away sleep.	1 Veiller pour s'enrichir, c'est se dessécher les chairs, et l'application qu'on y donne ôte le sommeil.
2 Anticipation in thought distracts the mind, and a grievous infirmity makes the soul sober.	2 La pensée inquiète de l'avenir renverse le sens, et la maladie grave rend l'âme sobre.
3 The rich man has labored in gathering wealth, and in his rest, he will be filled with his goods.	3 Le riche travaille pour amasser des biens, et quand il se repose, il a d'immenses richesses.
4 The poor man has labored in his lowly way, and in the end, he may still be in need.	4 Le pauvre travaille parce qu'il n'a pas de quoi vivre, et à la fin il est encore indigent.
5 Whoever loves gold will not be justified. And whoever pursues consumption will be consumed by it.	5 Celui qui aime l'or ne sera pas innocent, et celui qui recherche la corruption en sera rempli.
6 Many have been caused to fall because of gold, and it became their ruin by its beauty.	6 L'or en a fait tomber beaucoup, et sa beauté a été leur perte.
7 Gold is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice for it. Woe to those who pursue it eagerly, for all the imprudent will perish by it.	7 L'or est un bois de scandale pour ceux qui lui sacrifient; malheur à ceux qui le recherchent, car tout insensé périra par lui!
8 Blessed is the rich man who is found to be without blemish. And blessed is he who has not gone after gold, nor placed his hope in money or treasures.	8 Heureux le riche qui a été trouvé sans tache, qui n'a pas couru après l'or, et qui n'a pas mis son espérance dans l'argent et dans les trésors.
9 Who is he? For we should praise him. For he has done wonderful things in his life.	9 Qui est-il? et nous le louerons, car il a fait des choses merveilleuses durant sa vie.
10 He has been tested by it, and has become perfect; he will have eternal glory. He was able to transgress, but he has not transgressed. He was able to do evil, but he has not done evil.	10 Il a été éprouvé par l'or et trouvé parfait, il aura une gloire éternelle; il a pu violer la loi, et il ne l'a point violée; il a pu faire le mal, et il ne l'a pas fait.
11 Therefore, his good things are established in the Lord, and the entire Church of the saints will proclaim his almsgiving.	11 C'est pourquoi ses biens ont été affermis dans le Seigneur, et toute l'assemblée des saints publiera ses aumônes.
12 Are you seated at a great table? You should not open your mouth over it first.	12 T'es-tu assis à une grande table, n'y ouvre pas la bouche le premier.
13 You should not speak in this way: “There are many things that are upon it.”	13 Ne dis pas: Voilà bien des mets qui sont servis.
14 Remember that a wicked eye is evil.	14 Souviens-toi que l'oeil envieux est mauvais.
15 What has been made more wicked than the eye? Therefore, when it sees, it will shed tears over the entire face.	15 Qu'y a-t-il de pire que l'oeil parmi les créatures? C'est pourquoi il pleure sur toute sa surface, quand il regarde.
16 You should not extend your hand first, for then, having been corrupted by envy, you would be ashamed.	16 N'étends pas la main le premier, de peur que l'envie ne te souille et ne te fasse rougir.
17 You should not press forward at a feast.	17 Ne t'empresse pas pendant le festin.
18 Understand which things are your neighbor’s and not your own.	18 Juge des dispositions de ton prochain d'après les tiennes.
19 Make use of the things that are set before you, just as a frugal man would. Otherwise, if you eat much, you will be hated.	19 Use comme un homme tempérant de ce qui t'est servi, de peur que tu ne te rendes odieux en mangeant beaucoup.
20 Cease eating first, for the sake of discipline. And do not eat to excess, lest you offend.	20 Cesse le premier par bonne éducation, et n'excède en rien, de peur de choquer.
21 And if you sit in the midst of many, you should not extend your hand before they do, and you should not be the first to ask for a drink.	21 Si tu es assis avec beaucoup de personnes, n'étends pas la main avant eux, et ne demande pas à boire le premier.
22 How sufficient is a little wine for a well-taught man! For in sleep, you will not labor because of it, and you will not feel pain.	22 Un peu de vin n'est-il pas suffisant pour un homme réglé? Tu n'en seras pas incommodé pendant le sommeil, et tu ne sentiras pas de douleur.
23 Worry, and disease, and torment are with an intemperate man.	23 L'insomnie, la colique et les tranchées sont pour l'homme intempérant.
24 A healthy sleep is with a temperate man. He will sleep until morning, and his soul will be delighted with him.	24 L'homme sobre aura un sommeil salutaire; il dormira jusqu'au matin, et son âme se réjouira en lui-même.
25 And if you have been coaxed into eating too much, rise up, go outside, and vomit. And it will refresh you, and you will not bring sickness upon your body.	25 Que si on t'a contraint de manger beaucoup, lève-toi et vomis, et tu en seras soulagé, et tu n'attireras point de maladie à ton corps.
26 Listen to me, son, for you should not spurn me. And in the very end, you will discover my words.	26 Ecoute-moi, mon fils, et ne me méprise pas, et tu reconnaîtras à la fin la vérité de mes paroles.
27 In all your works, be prompt, and then no infirmity will befall you.	27 Sois prompt dans toutes tes actions, et aucune infirmité ne t'atteindra.
28 The lips of many will bless the splendid in bread. For the testimony of his truthfulness is faithful.	28 Des lèvres nombreuses béniront celui qui donne libéralement du pain, et l'on rendra à sa conduite un témoignage avantageux.
29 The city will murmur against the wicked in bread. For the testimony against his wickedness is true.	29 Toute la ville murmurera contre celui qui donne le pain avec parcimonie, et le témoignage qu'on rendra à sa méchanceté sera vrai.
30 Do not choose to provoke those who love wine. For wine has destroyed many.	30 N'excite point à boire ceux qui aiment le vin, car le vin en a fait périr beaucoup.
31 Fire tests the hardness of iron; similarly, drinking wine to inebriation will rebuke the hearts of the arrogant.	31 Le feu éprouve la dureté du fer; ainsi le vin, bu avec excès, fait reconnaître les coeurs des superbes.
32 Drinking wine in sobriety gives a contented life to men. If you drink it in moderation, you will be sober.	32 Le vin pris avec tempérance est une seconde vie pour les hommes; si tu en bois modérément, tu seras sobre.
33 What is life to him who is diminished by wine?	33 Quelle est la vie de celui qui est privé de vin?
34 What can cheat him of his life? Death.	34 Qui ôte la vie? C'est la mort.
35 From the beginning, wine was created for cheerfulness, but not for inebriation.	35 Le vin a été créé, à l'origine, pour réjouir, et non pour enivrer.
36 Wine taken in moderation lifts up the mind and the heart.	36 Le vin bu modérément est l'allégresse de l'âme et du coeur.
37 Sober drinking is healthful to mind and body.	37 La tempérance dans le boire est la santé de l'âme et du corps.
38 Wine taken in excess stirs up conflict and anger, and brings many to ruin.	38 Le vin bu avec excès produit la colère, et l'emportement, et de grandes ruines.
39 Wine taken in excess is bitter to the soul.	39 Le vin bu avec excès est l'amertume de l'âme.
40 The effects of inebriation are a stumbling block to the imprudent, diminishing strength and causing wounds.	40 L'ivrognerie inspire l'audace, elle fait tomber l'insensé, elle ôte la force et cause des blessures.
41 You should not argue with your neighbor during a banquet of wine. And you should not spurn him in his cheerfulness.	41 Ne fais pas de reproches à ton prochain dans un festin où l'on boit du vin, et ne le méprise pas tandis qu'il est joyeux.
42 You should not speak words of reproach to him. And you should not press him with repeated requests.	42 Ne lui adresse aucune parole injurieuse, et ne le presse point par quelque réclamation.
