Again, another, thinking to sail, and beginning to make his voyage through the raging waves, calls upon a piece of wood more fragile than the wood that carries him.1 Un altro, accingendosi a una navigazione e volendo attraversare onde selvagge, portato da una nave, invoca un legno ancora più fragile.
For this is what desire has contrived to be acquired, and the craftsman has formed its understanding.2 Ora la brama dell’acquisto ciò ha escogitato e ha costruito con ingegno di artista.
But your providence, O Father, governs, because you have provided for both a way in the sea and a very reliable path among the waves,3 E poi lo guida la tua provvidenza, o padre perché hai aperto una via anche nel mare e un sentiero sicuro tra i flutti;
revealing that you are able to save out of all things, even if someone were to go to sea without skill.4 dando così prova di saper salvare da ogni pericolo colui, che si imbarca, anche se privo di esperienza.
But, so that the works of your wisdom might not be empty, therefore, men trust their souls even to a little piece of wood, and, crossing over the sea by raft, they are set free.5 Tu non vuoi inoperose le opere della tua sapienza: per cui gli uomini si affidano a un legno ben fragile e si salvano passando sui flutti con una zattera.
But, from the beginning, when the proud giants were perishing, the hope of the world, fleeing by boat, gave back to future ages a seed of birth, which was governed by your hand.6 Anche all’inizio, infatti, mentre perivano i superbi giganti, la speranza del mondo, rifugiatasi in una barca, guidata per mano da te, conservò al mondo il seme della razza.
For blessed is the wood through which justice is made.7 Perché è benedetto il legno da cui sorge la giustizia!
But, through the hand that makes the idol, both it, and he who made it, is accursed: he, indeed, because it has been served by him, and it, because, though it is fragile, it is called ‘god.’8 Ed è maledetto quello, fatto con mani, e chi lo ha fatto, questi, perché esecutore dell’opera, e quello perché, cosa miserabile, viene denominato Dio.
But the impious and his impiety are similarly offensive to God.9 L’empio e la sua empietà sono ugualmente in odio a Dio
For that which is made, together with him who made it, will suffer torments.10 e viene punita l’opera con chi l’ha fatta.
Because of this, and according to the idolatries of the nations, there will be no refuge, for the things created by God have been made into hatred, and into a temptation to the souls of men, and into a snare for the feet of the foolish.11 Vi sarà, quindi, un giudizio anche per gli idoli delle genti: perché divennero abominio nella creazione di Dio e tentazione per le anime degli uomini e trappola al piede degli insensati.
For the beginning of fornication is the search for idols, and from their invention comes corruption of life.12 Ora l’idea di fare idoli fu l’origine dell’empietà; e l’averli introdotti portò alla corruzione della vita.
For they neither existed from the beginning, nor will they exist forever.13 Essi non C’erano prima né rimarranno poi:
For by the great emptiness of men they came into the world, and therefore their end is soon discovered.14 infatti, entrarono nel mondo per vani pensieri di uomini e quindi è decretata la loro pronta fine.
For a father, embittered with the suffering of grief, made an image of his son, who had been suddenly taken away from him, and then, he who had died as a man, now begins to be worshiped as if a god, and so rites and sacrifices are established among his servants.15 Ecco un padre, addolorato per un lutto prematuro: dopo aver fatto un ritratto del figlio, presto rapito, viene ora a venerare quale dio un uomo allora esanime e stabilisce tra i suoi dipendenti misteri e riti.
Then, in the course of time, iniquity gains strength within this erroneous custom, so that this error has been observed as if it were a law, and this figment has been worshiped at the command of tyrants.16 L'empio costume, rafforzatosi, poi, col tempo, u tenuto per legge!
And those, whom men could not openly honor because they were far off, a likeness of them was carried from far off, and from it they made a similar image of the king that they wanted to honor, so that, by their solicitude, they might worship he who was absent, just as if he were present.17 Anche per volontà di principi, vennero adorate le statue: è di quelli che, per le dimore lontane, gli uomini, non potevano onorare presenti, modellandosene così da lungi la figura, fecero un’immagine visibile del re, che si voleva onorare, per adularlo assente, con l’impegno, come se fosse presente.
Yet, it passes into their care, and those whom they did not know, they love because of the excellence of the artist.18 Ma per estendere il culto anche agli ignari, si rivolse l’ambizione dell’artista,
For he, wishing to please the one who hired him, embellished his art, so as to fashion a better likeness.19 per cui egli, volendo forse piacere al sovrano, ridusse, con arte, il ritratto a una maggiore bellezza.
But the multitude of men, brought together by the beauty of the work, now considered him to be a god, whom they had formerly honored as a man.20 E il popolo minuto, allettato dalla bellezza dell’opera, si tenne così, per cosa sacra, chi poco prima era onorato come uomo.
And this was the deception of human life: that men, serving either their own inclination or their kings, assigned the unutterable name to stones and wood.21 Ma ciò fu un’insidia per i viventi, perché gli uomini, piegandosi o alle disgrazie o alla tirannide, imposero il nome incomunicabile alla pietra e al legno.
And it was not enough for them to go astray concerning the knowledge of God, but also, while living in a great war of ignorance, they call so many and such great evils ‘peace.’22 Poi non bastò l’errore sulla nozione di Dio; vivono, inoltre, in una grande guerra d’ignoranza e danno nome di pace a questi mali.
For either they sacrifice their own sons, or they make dark sacrifices, or they hold vigils full of madness,23 Così, riti d’infanticidio o misteri clandestini, sia praticando le orge pazze di riti mirabolanti,
so that now they neither protect life, nor preserve a clean marriage, but one kills another through envy, or grieves him by adultery.24 non conservano più monde né vita né nozze; ma l’uno, con insidia, uccide l’altro o gli dà ansie con adulteri.
And all things are mixed together: blood, murder, theft and fraud, corruption and infidelity, disturbances and perjury, disorder within good things,25 Dovunque, frammischiati, ci sono solo sangue e assassinio, furto e frode, corruttela, perfidia, violenza, spergiuro;
forgetfulness of God, pollution of souls, alteration of procreation, inconstancy of marriage, unnatural adultery and homosexuality.26 vessazione dei buoni, ingratitudine per i benefici; corruzione di anime, inversioni sessuali, disordini nei matrimoni, adulterio e lussuria.
For the worship of unspeakable idols is the cause, and the beginning and the end, of all evil.27 Il culto, infatti, di idoli anonimi è principio e causa e consumazione di ogni male!
For they either act with madness while happy, or they insistently speak wild lies, or they live unjustly, or they are quick to commit perjury.28 Poiché essi o delirano nelle orge o divinano cose false o vivono da iniqui o spergiurano facilmente:
For, while they trust in idols, which are without a soul, vowing evil, they hope not to be harmed themselves.29 fidando in idoli senz’anima, non temono di incorrere in nessun danno per aver giurato male.
Therefore, from both sides it will fittingly happen, because they have thought evil of God, paying attention to idols, and because they have sworn unjustly, in guile despising justice.30 Ora, per questo e quello, li attendono pene proporzionate: perché pensarono male su Dio, seguendo gli idoli; e, a sfregio della santità, spergiurano con inganno.
For swearing is not virtue, but sinning always comes around to a punishment according to the transgression of the unjust.31 Perché non il potere di quelli per i quali si giura, ma la giustizia, che punisce colui che pecca, segue sempre la prevaricazione degli iniqui.
