CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
The life of a man on the earth is a battle, and his days are like the days of a hired hand.1 ποτερον ουχι πειρατηριον εστιν ο βιος ανθρωπου επι της γης και ωσπερ μισθιου αυθημερινου η ζωη αυτου
Just as a servant desires the shade, and just as the hired hand looks forward to the end of his work,2 η ωσπερ θεραπων δεδοικως τον κυριον αυτου και τετευχως σκιας η ωσπερ μισθωτος αναμενων τον μισθον αυτου
so also have I had empty months and have counted my burdensome nights.3 ουτως καγω υπεμεινα μηνας κενους νυκτες δε οδυνων δεδομεναι μοι εισιν
If I lie down to sleep, I will say, “When will I rise?” And next I will hope for the evening and will be filled with sorrows even until darkness.4 εαν κοιμηθω λεγω ποτε ημερα ως δ' αν αναστω παλιν ποτε εσπερα πληρης δε γινομαι οδυνων απο εσπερας εως πρωι
My flesh is clothed with particles of rottenness and filth; my skin is dried up and tightened.5 φυρεται δε μου το σωμα εν σαπρια σκωληκων τηκω δε βωλακας γης απο ιχωρος ξυων
My days have passed by more quickly than threads are cut by a weaver, and they have been consumed without any hope.6 ο δε βιος μου εστιν ελαφροτερος λαλιας απολωλεν δε εν κενη ελπιδι
Remember that my life is wind, and my eye will not return to see good things.7 μνησθητι ουν οτι πνευμα μου η ζωη και ουκετι επανελευσεται ο οφθαλμος μου ιδειν αγαθον
Neither will the sight of man gaze upon me; your eyes are upon me, and I will not endure.8 ου περιβλεψεται με οφθαλμος ορωντος με οι οφθαλμοι σου εν εμοι και ουκετι ειμι
Just as a cloud is consumed and passes away, so he who descends to hell will not ascend.9 ωσπερ νεφος αποκαθαρθεν απ' ουρανου εαν γαρ ανθρωπος καταβη εις αδην ουκετι μη αναβη
He will not return again to his house, nor will his own place know him any longer.10 ουδ' ου μη επιστρεψη ετι εις τον ιδιον οικον ουδε μη επιγνω αυτον ετι ο τοπος αυτου
And because of this, I will not restrain my mouth. I will speak in the affliction of my spirit. I will converse from the bitterness of my soul.11 αταρ ουν ουδε εγω φεισομαι τω στοματι μου λαλησω εν αναγκη ων ανοιξω πικριαν ψυχης μου συνεχομενος
Am I an ocean or a whale, that you have encircled me in a prison?12 ποτερον θαλασσα ειμι η δρακων οτι κατεταξας επ' εμε φυλακην
If I say, “My bed will comfort me, and I will find rest, speaking with myself on my blanket,”13 ειπα οτι παρακαλεσει με η κλινη μου ανοισω δε προς εμαυτον ιδια λογον τη κοιτη μου
then you will frighten me with dreams, and strike dread through visions,14 εκφοβεις με ενυπνιοις και εν οραμασιν με καταπλησσεις
so that, because of these things, my soul would choose hanging, and my bones, death.15 απαλλαξεις απο πνευματος μου την ψυχην μου απο δε θανατου τα οστα μου
I despair; by no means will I live any longer. Spare me, for my days are nothing.16 ου γαρ εις τον αιωνα ζησομαι ινα μακροθυμησω αποστα απ' εμου κενος γαρ μου ο βιος
What is man, that you should praise him? Or why do you place your heart near him?17 τι γαρ εστιν ανθρωπος οτι εμεγαλυνας αυτον η οτι προσεχεις τον νουν εις αυτον
You visit him at dawn, and you test him unexpectedly.18 η επισκοπην αυτου ποιηση εως το πρωι και εις αναπαυσιν αυτον κρινεις
How long will you not spare me, nor release me to ingest my saliva?19 εως τινος ουκ εας με ουδε προιη με εως αν καταπιω τον πτυελον μου εν οδυνη
I have sinned; what should I do for you, O keeper of men? Why have you set me against you, so that I have become burdensome even to myself?20 ει εγω ημαρτον τι δυναμαι σοι πραξαι ο επισταμενος τον νουν των ανθρωπων δια τι εθου με κατεντευκτην σου ειμι δε επι σοι φορτιον
Why do you not steal away my sin, and why do you not sweep away my iniquity? Behold, now I will sleep in the dust, and if you seek me in the morning, I will not remain.21 και δια τι ουκ εποιησω της ανομιας μου ληθην και καθαρισμον της αμαρτιας μου νυνι δε εις γην απελευσομαι ορθριζων δε ουκετι ειμι
