Then Eliphaz the Themanite responded by saying:1 Elifaz de Temán tomó la palabra y dijo:
Can man be compared with God, even if he were perfect in knowledge?2 ¿Acaso a Dios puede un hombre ser útil? ¡Sólo a sí mismo es útil el sensato!
What advantage is it to God, if you were just? Or what do you provide for him, if your way should be immaculate?3 ¿Tiene algún interés Sadday por tu justicia? ¿Gana algo con que seas intachable?
Will he reprove you and take you to judgment for being afraid,4 ¿Acaso por tu piedad él te corrige y entra en juicio contigo?
and not because of your many evil deeds and your infinite unfairness?5 ¿No será más bien por tu mucha maldad, por tus culpas sin límite?
For you have taken away the collateral of your brothers without cause, and stripped them naked of their clothing.6 Porque exigías sin razón prendas a tus hermanos, arrancabas a los desnudos sus vestidos,
You have not given water to the weary; you have taken bread away from the hungry.7 no dabas agua al sediento, al hambriento le negabas el pan;
By the strength of your arm, you took possession of the land, and you retain it by being the strongest.8 como hombre fuerte que hace suyo el país, y, rostro altivo, se sitúa en él,
You have sent widows away empty, and you have crushed the shoulders of orphans.9 despachabas a las viudas con las manos vacías y quebrabas los brazos de los huérfanos.
Because of this, you are surrounded by traps, and unexpected fears will disturb you.10 Por eso los lazos te aprisionan y te estremece un pavor súbito.
And did you think that you would not see darkness and that you were not to be overwhelmed by the on-rush of overflowing waters?11 La luz se hace tiniebla, y ya no ves, y una masa de agua te sumerge.
Have you not considered that God is higher than the heavens and is lifted above the height of the stars?12 ¿No está Dios en lo alto de los cielos? ¡Mira la cabeza de las estrellas, qué altas!
And you say: “Well, what does God know?” and, “He judges, as if through a fog,”13 Y tú has dicho: «¿Qué conoce Dios? ¿Discierne acaso a través del nublado?
and, “The clouds are his hiding-place,” and, “He does not examine us closely,” and, “He makes his rounds at the limits of the heavens.”14 Un velo opaco son las nubes para él, y anda por el contorno de los cielos.»
Do you not want to tend the path of the ages, which wicked men have spurned?15 ¿Vas a seguir tú la ruta antigua que anduvieron los hombres perversos?
These were taken away before their time, and a flood overthrew their foundation.16 Antes de tiempo fueron aventados, cuando un río arrasó sus cimientos.
They said to God, “Withdraw from us,” and they treated the Almighty as if he could do nothing,17 Los que decían a Dios: «¡Apártate de nosotros! ¿Qué puede hacernos Sadday?»
though he had filled their houses with good things. May their way of thinking be far from me.18 Y era él el que colmaba sus casas de ventura, aunque el consejo de los malos seguía lejos de él.
The just will see and will rejoice, and the innocent will mock them.19 Al verlo los justos se recrean, y de ellos hace burla el inocente:
Has not their haughtiness been cut down, and has not fire devoured the remnants of them?20 «¡Cómo acabó nuestro adversario! ¡el fuego ha devorado su opulencia!».
So, repose yourself with him and be at peace, and, in this way, you will have the best fruits.21 Reconcíliate con él y haz la paz: así tu dicha te será devuelta.
Accept the law from his mouth, and place his words in your heart.22 Recibe de su boca la enseñanza, pon sus palabras en tu corazón.
If you will return to the Almighty, you will be rebuilt, and you will put sinfulness far from your tabernacle.23 Si vuelves a Sadday con humildad, si alejas de tu tienda la injusticia,
He will give you stone in place of dirt, and torrents of gold in place of stone.24 si tiras al polvo el oro, el Ofir a los guijarros del torrente,
And the Almighty will be against your enemies, and silver will be gathered together for you.25 Sadday se te hará lingotes de oro y plata a montones para ti.
Then will you flock together in delight over the Almighty, and you will lift up your face to God.26 Tendrás entonces en Sadday tus delicias y hacia Dios levantarás tu rostro.
You will plead with him, and he will listen to you, and you will pay your vows.27 El escuchará cuando le invoques, y podrás cumplir tus votos.
You will decide on something, and it will come to you, and the light will shine in your ways.28 Todo lo que emprendas saldrá bien, y por tus caminos brillará la luz.
For he who had been humbled, will be in glory; and he who will lower his eyes, will be the one saved.29 Porque él abate el orgullo de los grandes, y salva al que baja los ojos.
The innocent will be saved, and he will be saved with purity in his hands.30 El libra al inocente; si son tus manos puras, serás salvo.
