Then Eliphaz the Themanite responded by saying:1 Élifaz de Téman prit alors la parole:
Can man be compared with God, even if he were perfect in knowledge?2 Qu’est-ce qu’un homme peut apporter à Dieu? L’homme de bon sens n’est utile qu’à lui-même.
What advantage is it to God, if you were just? Or what do you provide for him, if your way should be immaculate?3 Qu’importe au Tout-Puissant que tu aies tes raisons? Que gagne-t-il si tu te vois parfait?
Will he reprove you and take you to judgment for being afraid,4 Est-ce pour ta piété que Dieu te corrige et qu’il te fait un procès?
and not because of your many evil deeds and your infinite unfairness?5 N’est-ce pas plutôt que ta méchanceté est grande et tes fautes innombrables?
For you have taken away the collateral of your brothers without cause, and stripped them naked of their clothing.6 Sans motif tu exigeais de tes frères des gages, il restaient nus car tu prenais leur manteau!
You have not given water to the weary; you have taken bread away from the hungry.7 Tu ne donnais pas à boire à l’assoiffé, à l’affamé tu refusais le pain.
By the strength of your arm, you took possession of the land, and you retain it by being the strongest.8 Qu’arrive un homme fort, il s’empare des terres, et les gens en place s’y installent.
You have sent widows away empty, and you have crushed the shoulders of orphans.9 Tu renvoyais les veuves les mains vides et tu brisais les bras de l’orphelin.
Because of this, you are surrounded by traps, and unexpected fears will disturb you.10 C’est pourquoi te voilà entouré de pièges, paralysé soudain par la peur.
And did you think that you would not see darkness and that you were not to be overwhelmed by the on-rush of overflowing waters?11 La lumière s’est éteinte et tu ne vois plus, les eaux en crue t’ont submergé.
Have you not considered that God is higher than the heavens and is lifted above the height of the stars?12 Bien sûr, Dieu est très haut dans les cieux: vois comme les étoiles sont hautes!
And you say: “Well, what does God know?” and, “He judges, as if through a fog,”13 Mais alors tu as dit “Qu’est-ce que Dieu sait? Pourra-t-il juger à travers les nuages?
and, “The clouds are his hiding-place,” and, “He does not examine us closely,” and, “He makes his rounds at the limits of the heavens.”14 Les nuées font écran et il ne voit pas; il reste à se promener au pourtour des cieux.”
Do you not want to tend the path of the ages, which wicked men have spurned?15 Veux-tu donc retomber dans les vieux chemins où s’avançaient les habitués du mal?
These were taken away before their time, and a flood overthrew their foundation.16 Un instant a suffi pour les balayer, la crue des eaux emporta leurs fondations!
They said to God, “Withdraw from us,” and they treated the Almighty as if he could do nothing,17 Car ils disaient à Dieu: “Tiens-toi à l’écart! Que peut nous faire le Tout-Puissant?”
though he had filled their houses with good things. May their way of thinking be far from me.18 C’est lui qui remplissait leurs maisons de richesses, mais les méchants prenaient leurs décisions sans lui.
The just will see and will rejoice, and the innocent will mock them.19 Les justes le voient et se réjouissent, l’homme intègre se moque d’eux:
Has not their haughtiness been cut down, and has not fire devoured the remnants of them?20 “Leur fortune est anéantie, le feu a dévoré tout ce qu’ils possédaient!”
So, repose yourself with him and be at peace, and, in this way, you will have the best fruits.21 Allons, rapproche-toi de lui, fais la paix, c’est le moyen de relever ta fortune.
Accept the law from his mouth, and place his words in your heart.22 Reçois de sa bouche son instruction, et garde en ton cœur ses paroles.
If you will return to the Almighty, you will be rebuilt, and you will put sinfulness far from your tabernacle.23 Reviens humblement vers le Tout-Puissant, éloigne de ta tente ce qui est injustice,
He will give you stone in place of dirt, and torrents of gold in place of stone.24 ne fais pas plus de cas de l’or que de la terre, de l’or d’Ofir que des pierres du torrent.
And the Almighty will be against your enemies, and silver will be gathered together for you.25 Le Puissant aussitôt se fera ton or, ta montagne d’argent.
Then will you flock together in delight over the Almighty, and you will lift up your face to God.26 Tu trouveras ta joie dans le Tout-Puissant, tu lèveras vers lui ton regard.
You will plead with him, and he will listen to you, and you will pay your vows.27 Tu l’invoqueras et il t’exaucera; si tu fais un vœu, tu n’auras plus qu’à t’acquitter.
You will decide on something, and it will come to you, and the light will shine in your ways.28 Tu feras des projets, ils réussiront, la lumière brillera sur tous tes chemins.
For he who had been humbled, will be in glory; and he who will lower his eyes, will be the one saved.29 Car Dieu abaisse l’orgueilleux et sauve celui qui tient les yeux baissés.
The innocent will be saved, and he will be saved with purity in his hands.30 Il délivre l’innocent: si tu as les mains pures, tu seras sauvé!
