1 But Holofernes, on another day, instructed his army to ascend against Bethulia.	1 Ma Oloferne il dì seguente comandò alli suoi eserciti, che andassero contro a Betulia.
2 Moreover, there were one hundred and twenty thousand foot-soldiers, and twenty-two thousand horsemen, besides the contingents of those men who had been taken captive, and all the youths who had been abducted from the provinces and the cities.	2 Ed erano li pedoni combattitori (del suo esercito) cento ventimilia, cavalieri ventidue milia, senza la preparazione di quelli uomini, e di tutta quella gioventù, la qual lui avea condotto con sè delle provincie e delle cittadi le quali lui avea preso.
3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the sons of Israel, and they came through the foothills of the mountain, even to the apex, which looks down upon Dothain, from the place which is called Belma, up to Chelmon, which is opposite Esdrelon.	3 Tutti insieme si prepararono alla battaglia contro ai figliuoli d' Israel, e vennero per la estremità del monte persino alla sommità (del monte) la qual è verso Dotain, dal luogo che si chiama Belma, persino al luogo che si chiama Chelmon lo qual è contro ad Esdrelon.
4 But the sons of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, scattering ashes over their heads, praying with one accord that the God of Israel would show his mercy upon his people.	4 Ma i figliuoli d' Israel, quando viddero la loro moltitudine, gettaronsi sopra la terra, ponendo la cenere sopra i capi loro, tutti di uno animo pregando che Iddio d' Israel dimostrasse la misericordia sua sopra il popolo suo.
5 And, taking up their arms of war, they set up positions at the places that lead along a narrow footpath between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.	5 E pigliando l'arme sue da battaglia, stettero alli luoghi stretti delle strade che sono tra' monti, e non si partivano dalla custodia di quelli nè lo dì nè la notte.
6 Now Holofernes, while circling around, discovered that the fountain that flowed in to them, led directly through an aqueduct on the south side, beyond the city. And he instructed their aqueduct to be cut off.	6 E attorniando Oloferne per lo circuito, trovò uno fonte dallo quale uscian l'acque, ed entravano in uno condotto lo qual era dirizzato dalla parte australe della città, che conduceva loro l'acqua; e ordinò che quello condotto fosse disfatto.
7 Even so, there were springs not far from the walls, from which they were seen to draw water secretly, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.	7 Erano niente di meno non molto lontano da' muri della città alcuni fonti, dalli quali furtivamente furono veduti pigliare l'acqua, più tosto per ricrearsi che per bere.
8 But the sons of Ammon and Moab approached Holofernes, saying: “The sons of Israel do not trust in their lances, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hills and precipices constitute their fortifications.	8 E andorono i figliuoli di Ammon e di Moab ad Oloferne, dicendo: i figliuoli d' Israel non si confidano nè in lancia nè in sagitte, ma li monti li difendono, e li colli (de' monti) sì li custodiscono, posti nelli precipizii.
9 Therefore, so that you may be able to overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs so that they may not draw water from them, and you will put them to death without the sword, or at least, being weary, they will hand over their city, which they suppose to be, by its position in the mountains, unable to be conquered.”	9 Acciò che dunque senza andare a battaglia (e senza fare fatti d' arme) tu li possi superare, poni le guardie alli fonti acciò che non possino pigliare acqua; e senza coltello tu gli ucciderai, ovver certamente faticati darannoti la città sua, la qual per esser posta su questi monti pensano che non si supererae.
10 And these words were pleasing before Holofernes and before his attendants, and so he stationed a hundred men around every spring.	10 E piacque il consiglio ad Oloferne e a tutti i suoi satelliti, e ordinò per lo circuito i centurioni per ciascuno fonte.
11 And when they had kept this watch through twenty full days, the cisterns and collections of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was within the city not enough to satisfy them for even one day, because water was given out to the people daily by measure.	11 Ed essendo stata questa guardia per venti dì, mancorono le cisterne e le radunanze dell' acque a tutti quelli i quali abitavano in Betulia, per tal modo che non era nella città onde si potessono saziare solamente per uno dì, però che l'acqua si dava a misura ogni dì.
12 Then, all the men and women, youths and little ones, gathering together before Uzziah, all with one voice together,	12 Allora essendo congregati dinanzi a Ozia tutti gli uomini e le donne, giovani e fanciulli, dissero tutti a una voce:
13 said: “May God be judge between us and you, for you have done evil with us, in not being willing to speak peacefully with the Assyrians, and because of this, God has sold us into their hands.	13 giudichi Iddio tra noi e te, però che tu ci hai fatto molti mali, non volendo parlare pacificamente con gli Assirii, e per questo ne ha venduti Iddio nelle mani loro,
14 And therefore, there is no one to help us, while we are prostrated before their eyes with thirst and great destruction.	14 E però (che) non è chi ci aiuti, conciò sia cosa che noi sì caderemo tutti dinanzi a loro da sete, e in grande perdizione.
15 And now, gather together all who are in the city, so that we may willingly deliver everyone of us to the people of Holofernes.	15 E ora congregate tutti quelli che sono nella città, acciò che noi ci diamo tutti liberamente al popolo di Oloferne.
16 For it is better that as captives, being alive, we should bless the Lord, than that we should die and become a disgrace to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our children die before our eyes.	16 Egli è meglio che prigioni benediciamo il Signore vivendo, che moriamo e siamo obbrobrio a tutta la gente, conciò sia cosa che noi vediamo le nostre mogli e li nostri figliuoli morire dinanzi alli occhii nostri.
17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who takes vengeance upon us according to our sins, so that now you may deliver the city into the hand of the military of Holofernes. And may our end be brief, by the edge of the sword, that would be made longer by the dryness of thirst.”	17 Noi protestiamo oggi al cielo e alla terra, e al Dio de' padri nostri lo quale ci punisce secondo i peccati nostri, acciò che voi diate questa città in mano dello esercito di Oloferne; e sia il fine nostro breve nella punta dello coltello, il quale si fa più lungo nella siccità della sete.
18 And when they had said these things, there happened a great weeping and a loud lamentation within the assembly. From everyone and for many hours, with one voice, they cried out to God, saying:	18 E avendo loro dette queste parole, cominciorono tutti a piagnere e ululare nella chiesa grande; e per molte ore tutti chiamarono con una voce al Signore, dicendo:
19 “We have sinned like our fathers, we have acted unjustly, we have committed iniquity.	19 noi peccammo coi padri nostri; noi abbiamo operato ingiustamente, e molte iniquitadi abbiamo fatto.
20 May you have mercy on us, for you are pious, or with your own scourges avenge our iniquities, but do not be willing to deliver those trusting in you to a people who are ignorant of you,	20 Tu (Signore) che sei pio, abbi misericordia di noi, o nel tuo flagello castigaci delle nostre iniquitadi; e non voler dare quelli che (si confidano di te e che) ti confessano nelle mani del popolo lo qual non ti conosce;
21 so that they may not say among the Gentiles, ‘Where is their God?’ ”	21 acciò che non (si lodano e) dicano fra le genti: dov'è lo loro Iddio?
22 And when, being weary from these outcries, and tired from these weepings, they became silent,	22 E conciosia che, faticati per questi clamori e pianti, fossero lassi,
23 Uzziah, rising up covered in tears, said: “Be steadfast in soul, brothers, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.	23 levandosi Ozia pieno di lacrime, disse: siate di buono animo, fratelli miei, e aspettiamo questi cinque di la misericordia di Dio.
24 For perhaps he will break off his indignation and give glory to his own name.	24 Forse che leverà la indignazione sua da noi, e darà gloria al nome suo.
25 But if, with five days passing, help does not arrive, we will accomplish the words that you have spoken.”	25 Ma se passati i cinque dì non ci verrà adiutorio, faremo queste parole che avete detto, (e secondo che avete parlato).
