1 But Holofernes, on another day, instructed his army to ascend against Bethulia.	1 A következő nap Holofernész parancsot adott egész hadseregének és a vele levő segédcsapatoknak, hogy vonuljanak föl Betúlia ellen, foglalják el a hegyvidék átkelőit és indítsanak harcot Izrael fiai ellen.
2 Moreover, there were one hundred and twenty thousand foot-soldiers, and twenty-two thousand horsemen, besides the contingents of those men who had been taken captive, and all the youths who had been abducted from the provinces and the cities.	2 Ezen a napon a vitéz férfiak mind fölkészültek. Fegyveres embereinek száma százhetvenezer gyalogos és tizenkétezer lovas, nem számítva a málhás csapatot, amely igen nagy számban követte őket.
3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the sons of Israel, and they came through the foothills of the mountain, even to the apex, which looks down upon Dothain, from the place which is called Belma, up to Chelmon, which is opposite Esdrelon.	3 Tábort ütöttek a völgyben Betúlia mellett a forrásnál, majd fölfejlődtek szélességben Dótaintól Ábelmaimig, hosszúságban pedig Betúliától Kiamonig, amely Ezdrelonnal szemben van.
4 But the sons of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, scattering ashes over their heads, praying with one accord that the God of Israel would show his mercy upon his people.	4 Amikor Izrael fiai meglátták sokaságukat, félelem vett erőt rajtuk és így szóltak egymáshoz: »Ezek lelegelik az egész föld színét, sem a magas hegyek, sem a völgyek, sem a dombok nem képesek elviselni terhüket«.
5 And, taking up their arms of war, they set up positions at the places that lead along a narrow footpath between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.	5 Mindenki fogta harci felszerelését, tüzet gyújtottak falaik bástyáin és egész éjszaka őrséget tartottak.
6 Now Holofernes, while circling around, discovered that the fountain that flowed in to them, led directly through an aqueduct on the south side, beyond the city. And he instructed their aqueduct to be cut off.	6 A következő napon Holofernész felvonultatta egész lovasságát Izrael fiai szeme láttára, akik Betúliában voltak,
7 Even so, there were springs not far from the walls, from which they were seen to draw water secretly, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.	7 fölkereste a városukba vezető feljáratot, földerítette a vízforrást, és elfoglalta őket. Katonai őrséget rendelt oda és visszatért népéhez.
8 But the sons of Ammon and Moab approached Holofernes, saying: “The sons of Israel do not trust in their lances, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hills and precipices constitute their fortifications.	8 Ézsau fiainak vezérei, Moáb népének összes vezetői és a partvidék elöljárói mind eléje járultak és így szóltak hozzá:
9 Therefore, so that you may be able to overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs so that they may not draw water from them, and you will put them to death without the sword, or at least, being weary, they will hand over their city, which they suppose to be, by its position in the mountains, unable to be conquered.”	9 »Hallgassa meg szavunkat urunk azért, hogy ne legyen veszteség seregében.
10 And these words were pleasing before Holofernes and before his attendants, and so he stationed a hundred men around every spring.	10 Izrael fiainak népe nem a lándzsákban bizakodik, hanem a hegyek magaslatában, ahol lakik. Hegyeinek magaslatára feljutni nem könnyű.
11 And when they had kept this watch through twenty full days, the cisterns and collections of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was within the city not enough to satisfy them for even one day, because water was given out to the people daily by measure.	11 Ezért uram, ne ütközz meg velük csatasorba állva, akkor nem esik el népedből egyetlen ember sem,
12 Then, all the men and women, youths and little ones, gathering together before Uzziah, all with one voice together,	12 hanem maradj táborodban és tartsd ott sereged minden emberét, de foglalják el szolgáid a vizek forrását, amely a hegy lábánál fakad,
13 said: “May God be judge between us and you, for you have done evil with us, in not being willing to speak peacefully with the Assyrians, and because of this, God has sold us into their hands.	13 mert innen merít vizet Betúlia minden lakója. A szomjúság majd megöli őket, és átadják városukat. Mi és a te embereid felmegyünk a közeli hegyek gerincére, őrséget állítunk oda, hogy egyetlen ember se mehessen ki a városból.
14 And therefore, there is no one to help us, while we are prostrated before their eyes with thirst and great destruction.	14 Az éhség és szomjúság elpusztítja őket, asszonyaikat és gyermekeiket, mielőtt átjárná őket a kard, már lakóhelyeik utcáin hevernek,
15 And now, gather together all who are in the city, so that we may willingly deliver everyone of us to the people of Holofernes.	15 így visszafizetheted nekik lázadásukat és azt, hogy nem jöttek ki eléd békésen.«
16 For it is better that as captives, being alive, we should bless the Lord, than that we should die and become a disgrace to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our children die before our eyes.	16 Szavaik tetszésre találtak Holofernész és minden szolgája előtt, s elhatározta, hogy tanácsuk szerint jár el.
17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who takes vengeance upon us according to our sins, so that now you may deliver the city into the hand of the military of Holofernes. And may our end be brief, by the edge of the sword, that would be made longer by the dryness of thirst.”	17 Elindult Moáb fiainak tábora, s velük ötezren Asszíria fiaiból, letáboroztak a völgyben, és megszállták Izrael fiainak vizeit és forrásait.
18 And when they had said these things, there happened a great weeping and a loud lamentation within the assembly. From everyone and for many hours, with one voice, they cried out to God, saying:	18 Felvonultak Ammon és Ézsau fiai, és tábort ütöttek a hegyvidéken Dótainnal szemben. Egyeseket közülük elküldtek délre és keletre Egrebellel szemben, amely Kúsz mellett van a Mokmúr pataknál. Az asszír sereg többi része letáborozott a síkságon, és elárasztotta a föld egész felszínét. Nagyon sok sátruk és málhájuk volt, és igen nagy volt a számuk.
19 “We have sinned like our fathers, we have acted unjustly, we have committed iniquity.	19 Izrael fiai az Úrhoz, Istenükhöz kiáltottak, elvesztették bátorságukat, mert ellenségeik körülzárták őket és nem tudtak közülük kiszabadulni.
20 May you have mercy on us, for you are pious, or with your own scourges avenge our iniquities, but do not be willing to deliver those trusting in you to a people who are ignorant of you,	20 Az egész asszír sereg: a gyalogosok, a szekerek és lovasok harmincnégy napon át tartotta megszállva őket. Betúlia minden lakójának kiürültek vizes edényei,
21 so that they may not say among the Gentiles, ‘Where is their God?’ ”	21 ciszternái kiapadtak, s már egyetlen nap sem ihattak eleget, mert kimérték nekik a vizet.
22 And when, being weary from these outcries, and tired from these weepings, they became silent,	22 A kisgyermekek elepedtek, asszonyaik és ifjaik kimerültek a szomjúságtól és összeestek a város terein és a kapuk kijáratánál és már nem volt bennük semmi erő.
23 Uzziah, rising up covered in tears, said: “Be steadfast in soul, brothers, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.	23 Összegyűlt az egész nép: az ifjak, az asszonyok és gyermekek Ozijánál és a város vezetőinél hangosan kiáltottak és ezt mondták a vének előtt:
24 For perhaps he will break off his indignation and give glory to his own name.	24 »Ítéljen köztetek és köztünk az Isten, mert nagy igazságtalanságot követtetek el ellenünk, amikor nem beszéltetek békésen Asszíria fiaival.
25 But if, with five days passing, help does not arrive, we will accomplish the words that you have spoken.”	25 Most már nincs senki, aki segítségünkre jöhetne, Isten a kezükbe adott minket, mert a szomjúság miatt tehetetlenek vagyunk előttük nagy nyomorúságunkban.
	26 Ezért most hívjátok őket ide, adjátok át az egész várost zsákmányul Holofernész embereinek és egész seregének.
	27 Jobb lesz nekünk, ha az ő zsákmánya leszünk. Szolgái és szolgálóleányai leszünk, de életben maradunk és nem látjuk kisdedeink halálát saját szemünkkel, sem asszonyaink és gyermekeink pusztulását.
	28 Megesketünk titeket az égre és a földre és azok Istenére és atyáink Istenére, aki büntet minket bűneink és atyáink bűne miatt, hogy még ma így járjatok el.«
	29 Majd nagy sírásban törtek ki az összejövetelen mindnyájan és az Úrhoz kiáltottak nagy szóval.
	30 Ozija így szólt hozzájuk: »Bátorság testvérek, tartsunk ki még öt napig, ezalatt az Úr, a mi Istenünk felénk fordul irgalmában, mert nem hagyott el minket teljesen.
	31 Ha elmúlik ez az öt nap és nem érkezik számunkra segítség, szavaitok szerint fogok cselekedni.«
	32 Ezzel szétoszlatta a népet, mindenkit a maga őrhelyére, a város falaira és bástyáira, az asszonyokat és gyermekeket pedig házaikba bocsátotta. Nagy levertség vett erőt rajtuk.
