1 But Holofernes, on another day, instructed his army to ascend against Bethulia.	1 Il giorno appresso, Oloferne ordinò a' suoi eserciti di muovere contro Betulia.
2 Moreover, there were one hundred and twenty thousand foot-soldiers, and twenty-two thousand horsemen, besides the contingents of those men who had been taken captive, and all the youths who had been abducted from the provinces and the cities.	2 I fanti suol combattenti erano centoventimila, ed i cavalieri ventiduemila, oltre il rincalzo di quelli stati fatti prigionieri, e condotti via dalle province e dalle città, d'in fra tutta la gioventù.
3 All these prepared themselves together to fight against the sons of Israel, and they came through the foothills of the mountain, even to the apex, which looks down upon Dothain, from the place which is called Belma, up to Chelmon, which is opposite Esdrelon.	3 Tutti egualmente si prepararono a combattere contro i figli d'Israele, e vennero lungo il massiccio della montagna sino alla cima che guarda su Dotain, dal luogo chiamato Belma sino a Chelmon che è di faccia ad Esdrelon.
4 But the sons of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, scattering ashes over their heads, praying with one accord that the God of Israel would show his mercy upon his people.	4 I figli d'Israele, vista quella moltitudine, si prostraron per terra, spargendosi il capo di cenere, unanimi pregando il Dio d'Israele che mostrasse verso il suo popolo la sua misericordia.
5 And, taking up their arms of war, they set up positions at the places that lead along a narrow footpath between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.	5 Poi, prese le armi di guerra, si disposero pei luoghi che segnavano la via allo stretto passo fra i monti, e giorno e notte vi stavano a guardia.
6 Now Holofernes, while circling around, discovered that the fountain that flowed in to them, led directly through an aqueduct on the south side, beyond the city. And he instructed their aqueduct to be cut off.	6 Oloferne dal canto suo, girando attorno, trovò che la fontana la quale sgorgava [in città] era alimentata da un acquedotto che passava fuor di città dalla parte di mezzogiorno; e fece tagliare quell'acquedotto.
7 Even so, there were springs not far from the walls, from which they were seen to draw water secretly, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.	7 Non lungi però dalle mura v'erano delle fonti, e si vedeva andarvi gente di nascosto ad attingervi acqua, più per rifocillarsi che per cavarsi la sete.
8 But the sons of Ammon and Moab approached Holofernes, saying: “The sons of Israel do not trust in their lances, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defense, and the steep hills and precipices constitute their fortifications.	8 Allora i figli d'Ammon e di Moab si presentarono ad Oloferne, e gli dissero: «I figli d'Israele non confidano nelle lance e nelle frecce; ma hanno i monti che li difendono, e questi colli a precipizio che li proteggono.
9 Therefore, so that you may be able to overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs so that they may not draw water from them, and you will put them to death without the sword, or at least, being weary, they will hand over their city, which they suppose to be, by its position in the mountains, unable to be conquered.”	9 Se dunque li vuoi vincere senza venir con loro a battaglia, fa' guardar le fonti, si che non possano attingervi acque, e cosi li ucciderai senz'usare la spada; o stanchi consegneranno essi stessi la loro città che, posta come è sui monti, essi ritengono inespugnabile ».
10 And these words were pleasing before Holofernes and before his attendants, and so he stationed a hundred men around every spring.	10 Piacquero queste parole ad Oloferne ed a' suoi satelliti, e mise cento uomini a guardia di ciascuna fonte.
11 And when they had kept this watch through twenty full days, the cisterns and collections of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was within the city not enough to satisfy them for even one day, because water was given out to the people daily by measure.	11 Essendo durata già venti giorni questa guardia, furon vuote le cisterne e le conserve d'acqua per tutti gli abitanti di Betulia, cosi che non v'era in citta di che dissetarsi nemmeno per un giorno, e l'acqua veniva data a misura al popolo ogni giorno.
12 Then, all the men and women, youths and little ones, gathering together before Uzziah, all with one voice together,	12 Allora si radunarono tutti presso Ozia, uomini e donne, giovani e fanciulli e tutti ad una voce
13 said: “May God be judge between us and you, for you have done evil with us, in not being willing to speak peacefully with the Assyrians, and because of this, God has sold us into their hands.	13 dissero: «Giudichi Dio fra noi e te, che tu ci hai fatto un gran male a non voler trattare la pace con gli Assiri; perciò Iddio ci ha come venduti nelle loro mani.
14 And therefore, there is no one to help us, while we are prostrated before their eyes with thirst and great destruction.	14 Perciò ancora nessuno ci aiuta, mentre siamo gettati a terra sotto i loro occhi dalla sete e dalla calamità.
15 And now, gather together all who are in the city, so that we may willingly deliver everyone of us to the people of Holofernes.	15 Ed ora, convocate l'assemblea di tutti quelli che sono nella città, per arrenderci volontariamente a tutta la turba d'Oloferne.
16 For it is better that as captives, being alive, we should bless the Lord, than that we should die and become a disgrace to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our children die before our eyes.	16 Meglio è infatti esser prigionieri ma vivi, e benedire il Signore, che morire, ed essere l'obbrobrio di tutti gli uomini dopo aver visto morire sotto 1 nostri occhi le nostre mogli ed i nostri figli.
17 We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who takes vengeance upon us according to our sins, so that now you may deliver the city into the hand of the military of Holofernes. And may our end be brief, by the edge of the sword, that would be made longer by the dryness of thirst.”	17 Davanti al cielo ed alla terra, ed al Dio de' padri nostri che ci punisce oggi secondo i nostri peccati, vi scongiuriamo di consegnar la città ai soldati di Oloferne; e sia breve per mezzo della spada la nostra fine, che ora ci si presenta lunga nell'arsura della sete ».
18 And when they had said these things, there happened a great weeping and a loud lamentation within the assembly. From everyone and for many hours, with one voice, they cried out to God, saying:	18 Com'ebbero ciò detto, si levarono da ogni parte nell'assemblea gran pianti e gran grida, e per molte ore tutti insieme gridavano dicendo a Dio:
19 “We have sinned like our fathers, we have acted unjustly, we have committed iniquity.	19 « Abbiamo peccato, noi ed i padri nostri, abbiamo operato ingiustamente, abbiamo commesso iniquità.
20 May you have mercy on us, for you are pious, or with your own scourges avenge our iniquities, but do not be willing to deliver those trusting in you to a people who are ignorant of you,	20 Tu, che se' buono, abbi pietà di noi, e punisci tu stesso coi tuoi flagelli le nostre iniquità; ma non voler consegnare ad un popolo che non ti conosce quelli che in te confidano,
21 so that they may not say among the Gentiles, ‘Where is their God?’ ”	21 acciò non s'abbia a dire fra le nazioni: - Dov'è il loro Dio? -».
22 And when, being weary from these outcries, and tired from these weepings, they became silent,	22 Quando poi, affaticati di queste grida, di questi pianti, si furon chetati,
23 Uzziah, rising up covered in tears, said: “Be steadfast in soul, brothers, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.	23 s'alzò Ozia bagnato di lacrime, e disse: «State di buon animo, fratelli, e per altri cinque giorni aspettiamo la misericordia di Dìo.
24 For perhaps he will break off his indignation and give glory to his own name.	24 Forse egli allontanerà da noi la sua collera, e darà gloria al suo nome.
25 But if, with five days passing, help does not arrive, we will accomplish the words that you have spoken.”	25 Se poi, passati cinque giorni, non ci verrà aiuto, faremo come voi avete detto ».
