1 Now Satan rose up against Israel, and he incited David so that he would number Israel.	1 Cependant Satan s'éleva contre Israël, et il excita David à faire le dénombrement d'Israël.
2 And David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people: “Go, and number Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan. And bring me the number, so that I may know it.”	2 David dit donc à Joab et aux chefs du peuple : Allez, et faites le dénombrement de tout Israël, depuis Bersabée jusqu'à Dan, et apportez-m'en le rôle (nombre), afin que je le connaisse.
3 And Joab responded: “May the Lord increase his people a hundred times more than they are. But, my lord the king, are they not all your servants? Why would my lord seek this thing, which may be imputed as a sin to Israel?”	3 Joab lui répondit : Que le Seigneur daigne multiplier son peuple au centuple de ce qu'il est maintenant. Monseigneur le roi, tous ne sont-ils pas vos serviteurs ? Pourquoi recherchez-vous une chose qui sera imputée à péché à Israël ?
4 But the word of the king prevailed instead. And Joab went away, and he traveled around, through all of Israel. And he returned to Jerusalem.	4 Néanmoins le commandement du roi l'emporta. Joab partit donc et parcourut tout Israël, et il revint à Jérusalem.
5 And he gave to David the number of those whom he had surveyed. And the entire number of Israel was found to be one million and one hundred thousand men who could draw the sword; but from Judah, there were four hundred and seventy thousand men of war.	5 Il donna à David le dénombrement de tous ceux qu'il avait comptés, et il se trouva onze cent mille hommes d'Israël, tous capables de porter les armes ; et quatre cent soixante-dix mille guerriers de Juda.
6 But Levi and Benjamin he did not number. For Joab executed the orders of the king unwillingly.	6 Joab ne fit point le dénombrement de la tribu de Lévi ni de celle de Benjamin, parce qu'il n'exécutait qu'à regret l'ordre du roi.
7 Then God was displeased with what had been ordered, and so he struck Israel.	7 Et cet ordre déplut à Dieu, qui frappa Israël.
8 And David said to God: “I have sinned exceedingly in doing this. I beg you take away the iniquity of your servant. For I have acted unwisely.”	8 Mais David dit à Dieu : J'ai commis une grande faute en agissant ainsi. Je vous prie de pardonner cette iniquité à votre serviteur, car j'ai fait une folie.
9 And the Lord spoke to Gad, the seer of David, saying:	9 Alors le Seigneur parla à Gad, prophète (le Voyant) de David, et lui dit :
10 “Go, and speak to David, and tell him: Thus says the Lord: I give to you the option of three things. Choose the one that you will want, and I will do it to you.”	10 Va trouver David, et dis-lui : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Je te donne le choix de trois choses ; choisis celle que tu voudras, et je suivrai ton choix.
11 And when Gad had gone to David, he said to him: “Thus says the Lord: Choose what you will want:	11 Gad vint donc trouver David, et lui dit : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Choisis ce que tu voudras :
12 Either three years of famine, or three months for you to flee from your enemies, unable to escape from their sword, or three days for the sword of the Lord and a pestilence to turn within the land, with the Angel of the Lord killing in every part of Israel. Now therefore, see what I should respond to him who sent me.”	12 ou de souffrir la famine durant trois ans ; ou de fuir devant tes ennemis durant trois mois, sans pouvoir éviter leur glaive ; ou d'être sous le glaive du Seigneur durant trois jours, la peste étant dans tes Etats (le pays), et (un) l'ange du Seigneur donnant la mort dans toutes les terres d'Israël. Vois donc ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m'a envoyé.
13 And David said to Gad: “There are difficulties pressing upon me from every side. But it is better for me to fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are many, than into the hands of men.”	13 Et David dit à Gad : De tout côté l'angoisse me presse ; cependant il est meilleur pour moi de tomber entre les mains du Seigneur, car il est plein de miséricorde, que dans les mains des hommes.
14 Therefore, the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel. And there fell from Israel seventy thousand men.	14 Le Seigneur envoya donc la peste en Israël, et il mourut soixante-dix mille Israélites.
15 Also, he sent an Angel to Jerusalem, so that he might strike it. And while he was striking, the Lord saw and took pity over the magnitude of the harm. And he commanded the Angel who was striking: “It is enough. Now let your hand cease.” And the Angel of the Lord was standing beside the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	15 Il envoya aussi son (un) ange à Jérusalem pour la frapper ; et comme elle était frappée, le Seigneur la regarda, et fut touché de compassion d'une plaie si terrible. Il dit donc à l'ange exterminateur : C'est assez ; arrête ta main (à l'instant). Or l'ange du Seigneur était près de l'aire d'Ornan le Jébuséen.
16 And David, lifting up his eyes, saw the Angel of the Lord, standing between heaven and earth with a drawn sword in his hand, turned toward Jerusalem. And both he and those greater by birth, being clothed in haircloth, fell prone upon the ground.	16 Et David, levant les yeux, vit l'ange du Seigneur, qui était entre le ciel et la terre, et qui avait à la main une épée nue et tournée contre Jérusalem. Alors David et les anciens qui étaient avec lui, couverts de cilices, se prosternèrent en terre.
17 And David said to God: “Am I not the one who ordered that the people be numbered? It is I who sinned; it is I who did evil. This flock, what does it deserve? O Lord my God, I beg you to let your hand be turned against me and against the house of my father. But let not your people be struck down.”	17 Et David dit à Dieu : N'est-ce pas moi qui ai commandé de faire ce dénombrement du peuple ? C'est moi qui ai péché ; c'est moi qui ai commis le mal ; quant à ce troupeau, qu'a-t-il mérité ? Tournez donc, je vous prie, Seigneur mon Dieu, votre main contre moi et contre la maison de mon père ; mais épargnez votre peuple.
18 Then the Angel of the Lord instructed Gad to tell David that he should ascend and build an altar to the Lord God on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	18 Alors l'ange du Seigneur commanda à Gad de dire à David de venir et de dresser un autel au Seigneur Dieu, dans l'aire d'Ornan le Jébuséen.
19 Therefore, David ascended, in accord with the word of Gad, which he had spoken to him in the name of the Lord.	19 David y monta donc, suivant l'ordre que Gad lui en avait signifié de la part de Dieu (du Seigneur).
20 Now when Ornan had looked up and seen the Angel, he and his four sons hid themselves. For at that time, he was threshing wheat upon the floor.	20 Mais Ornan et ses quatre fils, ayant levé les yeux et vu l'ange, se cachèrent, car ils battaient alors leurs grains dans leur aire.
21 Then, as David was approaching Ornan, Ornan saw him, and he went out from the threshing floor to meet him. And he reverenced him prone on the ground.	21 Lors donc que David approchait, Ornan l'aperçut, et, sortant de son aire pour aller au-devant de lui, il se prosterna devant lui jusqu'à terre.
22 And David said to him: “Give this place of your threshing floor to me, so that I may build an altar to the Lord upon it. And you shall accept from me as much money as it is worth, so that the plague may cease from the people.”	22 David lui dit : Donne-moi la place qu'occupe ton aire, afin que j'y dresse un autel au Seigneur, et que je fasse cesser cette plaie de dessus le peuple, et je t'en payerai le prix qu'elle vaut.
23 But Ornan said to David: “Take it, and may my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Moreover, I give the oxen also as a holocaust, and the plow for wood, and the wheat for a sacrifice. I will offer all freely.”	23 Ornan dit à David : Le roi mon seigneur n'a qu'à la prendre et à en faire ce qu'il lui plaira. Je lui donnerai aussi les bœufs pour l'holocauste, les traîneaux (herses) en guise de bois, et le blé qui est nécessaire pour le sacrifice. Je donnerai toutes ces choses avec joie.
24 And king David said to him: “By no means shall it be so. Instead, I will give money to you, as much as it is worth. For I must not take it from you, and thereby offer to the Lord holocausts that cost nothing.”	24 Le roi David lui dit : Il n'en sera pas ainsi, mais je t'en payerai le prix. Car je ne dois pas te dépouiller pour offrir au Seigneur des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien.
25 Therefore, David gave Ornan, for the place, the very just weight of six hundred shekels of gold.	25 David donna donc à Ornan pour l'emplacement six cents sicles d'or d'un poids très juste.
26 And he built an altar to the Lord there. And he offered holocausts and peace offerings, and he called upon the Lord. And he heeded him by sending fire from heaven upon the altar of the holocaust.	26 Et il dressa là un autel au Seigneur, et y offrit des holocaustes et des hosties pacifiques. Et il invoqua le Seigneur, qui l'exauça en faisant descendre le feu du ciel sur l'autel de l'holocauste.
27 And the Lord instructed the Angel, and he turned his sword back into its sheath.	27 Alors le Seigneur commanda à l'ange de remettre son épée dans le fourreau ; ce qu'il fit.
28 Then, seeing that the Lord had heeded him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, David immediately immolated victims there.	28 Et aussitôt David, voyant que le Seigneur l'avait exaucé dans l'aire d'Ornan le Jébuséen, lui immola des victimes en ce lieu.
29 But the tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the desert, and the altar of holocausts, were at that time on the high place of Gibeon.	29 Le tabernacle du Seigneur que Moïse avait construit dans le désert, et l'autel des holocaustes, étaient alors au haut lieu de Gabaon.
30 And David was unable to go to the altar, so that he might pray to God there. For he had been struck with an exceedingly great fear, seeing the sword of the Angel of the Lord.	30 Et David ne put pas aller jusqu'à cet autel pour y offrir sa prière à Dieu, car il avait été frappé d'une trop grande frayeur, en voyant l'épée de l'ange du Seigneur.
