1 Truly, Adam knew his wife Eve, who conceived and gave birth to Cain, saying, “I have obtained a man through God.”	1 Or Adam connut Eve sa femme, et elle conçut et enfanta Caïn, en disant: Je possède un homme par la grâce de Dieu.
2 And again she gave birth to his brother Abel. But Abel was a pastor of sheep, and Cain was a farmer.	2 Elle enfanta de nouveau, et mit au monde son frère Abel. Or Abel fut pasteur de brebis, et Caïn agriculteur.
3 Then it happened, after many days, that Cain offered gifts to the Lord, from the fruits of the earth.	3 Or il arriva, longtemps après, que Caïn offrit au Seigneur des fruits de la terre en sacrifice.
4 Abel likewise offered from the firstborn of his flock, and from their fat. And the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his gifts.	4 Abel offrit aussi des premiers-nés de son troupeau, et de leur graisse. Et le Seigneur regarda favorablement Abel et ses présents.
5 Yet in truth, he did not look with favor on Cain and his gifts. And Cain was vehemently angry, and his countenance fell.	5 Mais Il ne regarda point Caïn, ni ce qu'il Lui avait offert. C'est pourquoi Caïn entra dans une très grande colère, et son visage en fut tout abattu.
6 And the Lord said to him: “Why are you angry? And why is your face fallen?	6 Et le Seigneur lui dit: Pourquoi êtes-vous en colère, et pourquoi votre visage est-il abattu?
7 If you behave well, will you not receive? But if you behave badly, will not sin at once be present at the door? And so its desire will be within you, and you will be dominated by it.”	7 Si vous faites bien, n'en serez-vous pas récompensé? Et si vous faites mal, le péché ne sera-t-il pas aussitôt à votre porte? Mais votre concupiscence sera sous vous, et vous la dominerez.
8 And Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go outside.” And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and he put him to death.	8 Or Caïn dit à son frère Abel: Sortons dehors. Et lorsqu'ils furent dans les champs, Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua.
9 And the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And he responded: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”	9 Le Seigneur dit à Caïn: Où est votre frère Abel? Il Lui répondit: Je ne sais. Suis-je le gardien de mon frère?
10 And he said to him: “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the land.	10 Le Seigneur lui repartit: Qu'avez-vous fait? La voix du sang de votre frère crie de la terre jusqu'à moi.
11 Now, therefore, you will be cursed upon the land, which opened its mouth and received the blood of your brother at your hand.	11 Vous serez donc maintenant maudit sur la terre, qui a ouvert sa bouche, et qui a reçu de votre main le sang de votre frère.
12 When you work it, it will not give you its fruit; a vagrant and a fugitive shall you be upon the land.”	12 Quand vous l'aurez cultivée, elle ne vous rendra pas son fruit. Vous serez fugitif et vagabond sur la terre.
13 And Cain said to the Lord: “My iniquity is too great to deserve kindness.	13 Caïn répondit au Seigneur: Mon iniquité est trop grande pour que j'en obtienne le pardon.
14 Behold, you have cast me out this day before the face of the earth, and from your face I will be hidden; and I will be a vagrant and a fugitive on the earth. Therefore, anyone who finds me will kill me.”	14 Vous me chassez aujourd'hui de dessus la terre, et je m'irai cacher de devant Votre face. Je serai fugitif et vagabond sur la terre. Quiconque donc me trouvera, me tuera.
15 And the Lord said to him: “By no means will it be so; rather, whoever would kill Cain, will be punished sevenfold.” And the Lord placed a seal upon Cain, so that anyone who found him would not put him to death.	15 Le Seigneur lui répondit: Non, cela ne sera pas; mais quiconque tuera Caïn en sera puni sept fois. Et le Seigneur mit un signe sur Caïn, afin que ceux qui le trouveraient ne le tuassent point.
16 And so Cain, departing from the face of the Lord, lived as a fugitive on the earth, toward the eastern region of Eden.	16 Caïn, s'étant retiré de devant la face du Seigneur, fut vagabond sur la terre, et il habita vers la région orientale d'Eden.
17 Then Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. And he built a city, and he called its name by the name of his son, Enoch.	17 Et ayant connu sa femme, elle conçut et enfanta Hénoch. Et il bâtit une ville qu'il appela Hénoch, du nom de son fils.
18 Thereafter, Enoch conceived Irad, and Irad conceived Mahujael, and Mahujael conceived Mathusael, and Mathusael conceived Lamech.	18 Or Hénoch engendra Irad, et Irad engendra Maviaël, et Maviaël engendra Mathusaël, et Mathusaël engendra Lamech,
19 Lamech took two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.	19 Qui eut deux femmes, dont l'une s'appelait Ada, et l'autre Sella.
20 And Adah conceived Jabel, who was the father of those who live in tents and are shepherds.	20 Ada enfanta Jabel, qui fut père de ceux qui demeurent dans des tentes, et des pasteurs.
21 And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of those who sing to the harp and the organ.	21 Son frère s'appelait Jubal: et il fut le père de ceux qui jouent de la harpe et de l'orgue.
22 Zillah also conceived Tubalcain, who was a hammerer and artisan in every work of brass and iron. In fact, the sister of Tubalcain was Noema.	22 Sella enfanta aussi Tubalcaïn, qui eut l'art de travailler avec le marteau, et qui fut habile en toutes sortes d'ouvrages d'airain et de fer. Noéma était la soeur de Tubalcaïn.
23 And Lamech said to his wives Adah and Zillah: “Listen to my voice, you wives of Lamech, pay attention to my speech. For I have killed a man to my own harm, and an adolescent to my own bruising.	23 Or Lamech dit a ses femmes Ada et Sella: Femmes de Lamech, entendez ma voix, écoutez ce que je vais dire: J'ai tué un homme pour ma blessure, et un jeune homme pour ma meurtrissure.
24 Sevenfold vengeance will be given for Cain, but for Lamech, seventy-seven times.”	24 On vengera sept fois la mort de Caïn, et celle de Lamech soixante-dix fois sept fois.
25 Adam also knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Seth, saying, “God has given me another offspring, in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.”	25 Adam connut encore sa femme, et elle enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Seth, en disant: Le Seigneur m'a donné un autre fils au lieu d'Abel, que Caïn a tué.
26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos. This one began to invoke the name of the Lord.	26 Il naquit aussi à Seth un fils, qu'il appela Enos. C'est lui qui commença d'invoquer le nom du Seigneur.
