Genesis 4

1 Truly, Adam knew his wife Eve, who conceived and gave birth to Cain, saying, “I have obtained a man through God.”	1 L'homme connut Eve, sa femme; elle conçut et enfanta Caïn et elle dit: "J'ai acquis un homme de parYahvé."
2 And again she gave birth to his brother Abel. But Abel was a pastor of sheep, and Cain was a farmer.	2 Elle donna aussi le jour à Abel, frère de Caïn. Or Abel devint pasteur de petit bétail et Caïn cultivaitle sol.
3 Then it happened, after many days, that Cain offered gifts to the Lord, from the fruits of the earth.	3 Le temps passa et il advint que Caïn présenta des produits du sol en offrande à Yahvé,
4 Abel likewise offered from the firstborn of his flock, and from their fat. And the Lord looked with favor on Abel and his gifts.	4 et qu'Abel, de son côté, offrit des premiers-nés de son troupeau, et même de leur graisse. Or Yahvéagréa Abel et son offrande.
5 Yet in truth, he did not look with favor on Cain and his gifts. And Cain was vehemently angry, and his countenance fell.	5 Mais il n'agréa pas Caïn et son offrande, et Caïn en fut très irrité et eut le visage abattu.
6 And the Lord said to him: “Why are you angry? And why is your face fallen?	6 Yahvé dit à Caïn: "Pourquoi es-tu irrité et pourquoi ton visage est-il abattu?
7 If you behave well, will you not receive? But if you behave badly, will not sin at once be present at the door? And so its desire will be within you, and you will be dominated by it.”	7 Si tu es bien disposé, ne relèveras-tu pas la tête? Mais si tu n'es pas bien disposé, le péché n'est-il pasà la porte, une bête tapie qui te convoite? pourras-tu la dominer?"
8 And Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go outside.” And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and he put him to death.	8 Cependant Caïn dit à son frère Abel: "Allons dehors", et, comme ils étaient en pleine campagne,Caïn se jeta sur son frère Abel et le tua.
9 And the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” And he responded: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”	9 Yahvé dit à Caïn: "Où est ton frère Abel?" Il répondit: "Je ne sais pas. Suis-je le gardien de monfrère?"
10 And he said to him: “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the land.	10 Yahvé reprit: "Qu'as-tu fait! Ecoute le sang de ton frère crier vers moi du sol!
11 Now, therefore, you will be cursed upon the land, which opened its mouth and received the blood of your brother at your hand.	11 Maintenant, sois maudit et chassé du sol fertile qui a ouvert la bouche pour recevoir de ta main lesang de ton frère.
12 When you work it, it will not give you its fruit; a vagrant and a fugitive shall you be upon the land.”	12 Si tu cultives le sol, il ne te donnera plus son produit: tu seras un errant parcourant la terre."
13 And Cain said to the Lord: “My iniquity is too great to deserve kindness.	13 Alors Caïn dit à Yahvé: "Ma peine est trop lourde à porter.
14 Behold, you have cast me out this day before the face of the earth, and from your face I will be hidden; and I will be a vagrant and a fugitive on the earth. Therefore, anyone who finds me will kill me.”	14 Vois! Tu me bannis aujourd'hui du sol fertile, je devrai me cacher loin de ta face et je serai unerrant parcourant la terre: mais, le premier venu me tuera!"
15 And the Lord said to him: “By no means will it be so; rather, whoever would kill Cain, will be punished sevenfold.” And the Lord placed a seal upon Cain, so that anyone who found him would not put him to death.	15 Yahvé lui répondit: "Aussi bien, si quelqu'un tue Caïn, on le vengera sept fois" et Yahvé mit unsigne sur Caïn, afin que le premier venu ne le frappât point.
16 And so Cain, departing from the face of the Lord, lived as a fugitive on the earth, toward the eastern region of Eden.	16 Caïn se retira de la présence de Yahvé et séjourna au pays de Nod, à l'orient d'Eden.
17 Then Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. And he built a city, and he called its name by the name of his son, Enoch.	17 Caïn connut sa femme, qui conçut et enfanta Hénok. Il devint un constructeur de ville et il donna àla ville le nom de son fils, Hénok.
18 Thereafter, Enoch conceived Irad, and Irad conceived Mahujael, and Mahujael conceived Mathusael, and Mathusael conceived Lamech.	18 A Hénok naquit Irad, et Irad engendra Mehuyaël, et Mehuyaël engendra Metushaël, et Metushaëlengendra Lamek.
19 Lamech took two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.	19 Lamek prit deux femmes: le nom de la première était Ada et le nom de la seconde Cilla.
20 And Adah conceived Jabel, who was the father of those who live in tents and are shepherds.	20 Ada enfanta Yabal: il fut l'ancêtre de ceux qui vivent sous la tente et ont des troupeaux.
21 And the name of his brother was Jubal; he was the father of those who sing to the harp and the organ.	21 Le nom de son frère était Yubal: il fut l'ancêtre de tous ceux qui jouent de la lyre et du chalumeau.
22 Zillah also conceived Tubalcain, who was a hammerer and artisan in every work of brass and iron. In fact, the sister of Tubalcain was Noema.	22 De son côté, Cilla enfanta Tubal-Caïn: il fut l'ancêtre de tous les forgerons en cuivre et en fer; lasœur de Tubal-Caïn était Naama.
23 And Lamech said to his wives Adah and Zillah: “Listen to my voice, you wives of Lamech, pay attention to my speech. For I have killed a man to my own harm, and an adolescent to my own bruising.	23 Lamek dit à ses femmes: "Ada et Cilla, entendez ma voix, femmes de Lamek, écoutez ma parole:J'ai tué un homme pour une blessure, un enfant pour une meurtrissure.
24 Sevenfold vengeance will be given for Cain, but for Lamech, seventy-seven times.”	24 C'est que Caïn est vengé sept fois, mais Lamek, 77 fois!"
25 Adam also knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and she called his name Seth, saying, “God has given me another offspring, in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.”	25 Adam connut sa femme; elle enfanta un fils et lui donna le nom de Seth "car, dit-elle, Dieu m'aaccordé une autre descendanceà la place d'Abel, puisque Caïn l'a tué."
26 But to Seth also was born a son, whom he called Enos. This one began to invoke the name of the Lord.	26 Un fils naquit à Seth aussi, et il lui donna le nom d'Enosh. Celui-ci fut le premier à invoquer le nomde Yahvé.
