Joshua 9

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Hearing these things, al the kings on this side of the Jordan, in the highlands and in the lowlands, allalong the coast of the Great Sea towards the Lebanon, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites andJebusites, with one consent	1 Come udirono tali cose tutti i re che stavano di qua dal Giordano, nella zona montuosa, nel bassopiano collinoso e lungo la costa del Mar Mediterraneo verso il Libano, gli Hittiti, gli Amorrei, i Cananei, i Perizziti, gli Evei, i Gebusei,
2 formed a fighting al iance against Joshua and Israel.	2 si coalizzarono per combattere insieme contro Giosuè e contro Israele.
3 When the inhabitants of Gibeon learned how Joshua had treated Jericho and Ai, for their part,	3 Gli abitanti di Gabaon invece, quando seppero come Giosuè aveva trattato Gerico e Ai,
4 they had recourse to a ruse. They provided themselves with supplies, and loaded their donkeys with oldsacks and with old wineskins which had burst and been sewn up again.	4 giocarono per conto proprio d'astuzia: andarono a far provviste di viaggio. Presero sacchi sdruciti sopra i loro asini, vecchi otri per il vino, strappati e rappezzati,
5 They put on patched old sandals and worn-out clothes. The only bread they took with them to eat wasdried up and crumbling.	5 misero ai piedi sandali vecchi e rattoppati e addosso vesti sdrucite; tutto il pane della loro provvista era secco e ridotto in briciole.
6 They came to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and to him and the men of Israel they said, 'We come froma distant country, so make a treaty with us.'	6 Così vennero da Giosuè, negli accampamenti di Gàlgala e dissero a lui e al popolo d'Israele: "Noi siamo venuti da un paese lontano: ora, fate alleanza con noi!".
7 The Israelites answered these Hivites, 'For all we know, you may live right among us. How then couldwe make a treaty with you?'	7 Gl'Israeliti risposero loro: "Non abitate, per caso, in mezzo a noi? E come potremo stringere alleanza con voi?".
8 They said to Joshua, 'We are your servants.' 'But who are you?' Joshua asked them, 'and where do youcome from?'	8 Quelli dissero a Giosuè: "Noi siamo tuoi schiavi". Giosuè domandò loro: "Chi siete e da dove venite?".
9 They said, 'Your servants have come from a country very far away, because of the fame of Yahwehyour God; for we have heard of him and of al that he did in Egypt,	9 Quelli risposero: "Da una terra molto lontana vengono i tuoi servi, per il nome del Signore tuo Dio, perché noi abbiamo sentito parlare di lui, di tutto quello che ha fatto in Egitto.
10 and of al that he did to the two Amorite kings who used to live on the other side of the Jordan: Sihonking of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who used to live at Ashtaroth.	10 Come pure tutto quello che ha fatto ai due re Amorrei che erano al di là del Giordano, a Sicon, re di Chesbon, e ad Og, re di Basan, che risiedeva ad Astarot.
11 Because of which, our elders and al the people of our country said to us, "Take provisions with you forthe journey; go and meet them and say to them: We are your servants; so make a treaty with us."	11 I nostri anziani e tutti gli abitanti della regione ci dissero: "Prendete con voi provviste da viaggio e andate incontro ad essi, dicendo loro: Noi siamo vostri servi, fate dunque alleanza con noi".
12 Here is our bread; it was warm when we took it from home to provide for our journey the day we setout to come to you, and now, you can see, it is dried up and crumbling.	12 Ecco qui il nostro pane: era caldo quando ce ne provvedemmo dalle nostre case il giorno che ne uscimmo per venirvi incontro, ed ora eccolo secco e sbriciolato.
13 These wineskins were new when we filled them; you can see, they have burst; and these clothes andsandals of ours are worn out from travelling such a long way.'	13 Questi sono gli otri per il vino, che erano nuovi quando li riempimmo, ed ecco che sono rotti. E questi sono i nostri vestiti e i nostri sandali, sdruciti a causa del viaggio troppo lungo".
14 The leaders sampled some of the food they offered, but they did not ask Yahweh's orders.	14 Quegli uomini assaggiarono le loro provviste, ma non consultarono il Signore.
15 Joshua made peace with them, and struck a treaty with them guaranteeing their lives, and the leadersof the community ratified it by oath.	15 Giosuè fece pace con essi e strinse con essi il patto di lasciarli in vita, e i capi del popolo lo confermarono con il loro giuramento.
16 Now it so happened that three days after the treaty had been made, it became known that they were aneighbouring people, living in Israel's region.	16 Tre giorni dopo ch'essi avevano stretto il patto con loro, si seppe che quelli erano loro vicini, abitanti in mezzo ad essi.
17 The Israelites set out from camp, arriving in their towns three days later. Their towns were Gibeon,Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-Jearim.	17 Mossero allora il campo i figli d'Israele e in tre giorni giunsero alle loro città, che erano: Gabaon, Chefira, Beerot e Kiriat-Iearim.
18 The Israelites did not attack them, since the leaders of the community had sworn to them by Yahweh,God of Israel, but the whole community muttered against the leaders.	18 Però i figli d'Israele non li uccisero, perché i capi del popolo avevano giurato ad essi in nome del Signore, Dio d'Israele; ma la massa del popolo mormorò contro i capi.
19 The leaders, however, al said to the whole community, 'Since we have sworn an oath to them byYahweh, God of Israel, we cannot touch them now.	19 E tutti i capi risposero all'intera assemblea: "Noi abbiamo fatto con essi giuramento in nome del Signore, Dio d'Israele, e ora non possiamo toccarli.
20 This is what we shal do with them: let them live, rather than bring retribution down on ourselves onaccount of the oath which we have sworn to them.'	20 Questo però faremo loro: li lasceremo in vita perché non venga l'ira divina su di noi, a causa del giuramento che abbiamo prestato".
21 And the leaders went on, 'Let them live, but let them be wood-cutters and water-carriers for the wholecommunity.' Thus spoke the leaders.	21 Poi aggiunsero: "Vivano pure, ma siano spaccatori di legna e portatori d'acqua per tutto il popolo". Come i capi ebbero loro parlato,
22 Joshua sent for the Gibeonites and asked them, 'Why did you deceive us by saying, "We live very faraway," when in fact you live right among us?	22 Giosuè chiamò i Gabaoniti e disse loro: "Perché ci avete ingannati dicendo: "Noi abitiamo molto lontano da voi", mentre abitate in mezzo a noi?
23 From now on, you are accursed and wil for ever be serfs, as wood-cutters and water-carriers in thehouse of my God.'	23 Orbene, siate maledetti; né mai voi cesserete di essere schiavi, spaccatori di legna e portatori d'acqua nella casa del mio Dio".
24 Their answer to Joshua was, 'We did it because your servants had been rightly told that Yahweh yourGod had ordered his servant Moses to give you the whole of this country and destroy al its inhabitants beforeyou; also because, as you advanced on us, we feared very greatly for our lives. That was why we did this.	24 Quelli risposero a Giosuè: "Ai tuoi servi era stato molto ben riferito ciò che aveva ordinato il Signore, tuo Dio, a Mosè, suo servo, di dare a voi tutta la terra e distruggere di fronte a voi tutti gli abitanti del paese. Abbiamo avuto timore dinanzi a voi per le nostre vite, perciò abbiamo fatto tal cosa.
25 Now, as you see, we are at your mercy; do to us whatever you think good and right.'	25 Ed ora, eccoci nelle tue mani; fa' pure di noi quello che ti sembra buono e giusto".
26 What he did with them was this: he saved them from the hand of the Israelites, who did not kil them.	26 Giosuè li trattò così e li liberò dalle mani degl'Israeliti, che non li uccisero;
27 But that very day Joshua made them wood-cutters and water-carriers for the community and for thealtar of Yahweh, at the place which he would eventual y choose; and so they are today.	27 e da quel giorno li stabilì come taglialegna e portatori d'acqua per tutto il popolo e per l'altare del Signore, nel luogo che egli avrebbe scelto, fino ad oggi.
