Galatians 3

1 You stupid people in Galatia! After you have had a clear picture of Jesus Christ crucified, right in front ofyour eyes, who has put a spell on you?	1 Ô Galates sans cervelle! Comment ont-ils pu vous fasciner alors qu’on vous avait mis sous les yeux Jésus Christ crucifié?
2 There is only one thing I should like you to tel me: How was it that you received the Spirit -- was it bythe practice of the Law, or by believing in the message you heard?	2 Je voudrais que vous me disiez: avez-vous reçu l’Esprit en pratiquant la Loi ou en accueillant la foi?
3 Having begun in the Spirit, can you be so stupid as to end in the flesh?	3 Vraiment vous êtes intelligents: vous avez commencé par l’Esprit et vous terminez par la chair!
4 Can al the favours you have received have had no effect at al -- if there real y has been no effect?	4 Une telle expérience ne vous a donc servi à rien? Servi à rien - est-ce possible?
5 Would you say, then, that he who so lavishly sends the Spirit to you, and causes the miracles amongyou, is doing this through your practice of the Law or because you believed the message you heard?	5 Si Dieu vous distribue les dons de l’Esprit, s’il fait pour vous des miracles, qu’est-ce que cela a à voir avec la Loi? N’est-ce pas plutôt parce que vous avez accueilli la foi?
6 Abraham, you remember, put his faith in God, and this was reckoned to him as uprightness.	6 C’est comme pour Abraham: Il crut à Dieu, et c’est pourquoi il fut regardé comme juste.
7 Be sure, then, that it is people of faith who are the children of Abraham.	7 Donc, vous le voyez, les fils d’Abraham sont ceux qui s’appuient sur la foi.
8 And it was because scripture foresaw that God would give saving justice to the gentiles through faith,that it announced the future gospel to Abraham in the words: Al nations wil be blessed in you.	8 L’Écriture savait déjà que Dieu ferait des païens des justes par le chemin de la foi. Aussi Abraham reçut-il cette promesse: La bénédiction passera de toi à toutes les nations.
9 So it is people of faith who receive the same blessing as Abraham, the man of faith.	9 Ce sont donc bien ceux qui comptent sur la foi qui sont bénis avec le croyant Abraham.
10 On the other hand, all those who depend on the works of the Law are under a curse, since scripturesays: Accursed be he who does not make what is written in the book of the Law effective, by putting it intopractice.	10 Au contraire, c’est une malédiction qui attend ceux qui comptent sur la pratique de la Loi: Maudit soit celui qui ne met pas en pratique à tout moment tout ce qui est écrit dans ce livre de la Loi.
11 Now it is obvious that nobody is reckoned as upright in God's sight by the Law, since the upright willlive through faith;	11 Avec la Loi, personne ne devient juste devant Dieu. C’est évident, puisque le juste vivra par la foi,
12 and the Law is based not on faith but on the principle, whoever complies with it will find life in it.	12 et la Loi ignore la foi quand elle dit: Celui qui met en pratique ces choses, vivra grâce à elles.
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by being cursed for our sake since scripture says:Anyone hanged is accursed,	13 Le Christ nous a rachetés de cette malédiction de la Loi quand pour nous il est devenu malédiction, selon ce qui est écrit: Celui que l’on pend à un poteau est une malédiction.
14 so that the blessing of Abraham might come to the gentiles in Christ Jesus, and so that we mightreceive the promised Spirit through faith.	14 C’est alors que, dans le Christ Jésus, la bénédiction d’Abraham a atteint les nations païennes, et par la foi nous avons reçu la promesse, c’est-à-dire l’Esprit.
15 To put it in human terms, my brothers: even when a will is only a human one, once it has been ratifiednobody can cancel it or add more provisions to it.	15 Frères, je prends un exemple. Si quelqu’un fait un testament selon les règles, personne ne peut l’annuler ou le modifier.
16 Now the promises were addressed to Abraham and to his progeny. The words were not and to hisprogenies in the plural, but in the singular; and to your progeny, which means Christ.	16 Dans le cas d’Abraham, les promesses étaient pour lui et pour son descendant. Il n’est pas dit: “pour tes descendants”; on ne fait pas allusion à plusieurs, mais à un seul: ton descendant, et c’est le Christ.
17 What I am saying is this: once a wil had been long ago ratified by God, the Law, coming four hundredand thirty years later, could not abolish it and so nul ify its promise.	17 Alors je dis: si Dieu a fait un testament selon les règles, la Loi qui est venue 430 ans plus tard ne l’a pas annulé, elle n’a pas pu revenir sur la promesse.
18 You see, if the inheritance comes by the Law, it no longer comes through a promise; but it was by apromise that God made his gift to Abraham.	18 Or si on hérite en vertu de la Loi, ce n’est plus en vertu de la promesse. Et précisément cet héritage était pour Abraham une promesse et un don de Dieu.
19 Then what is the purpose of the Law? It was added to deal with crimes until the 'progeny' to whom thepromise had been made should come; and it was promulgated through angels, by the agency of an intermediary.	19 Alors, pourquoi la Loi? Elle a été ajoutée en vue des manquements, elle valait jusqu’à la venue de ce descendant d’Abraham pour qui était la promesse, et ce sont des anges qui l’ont mise en place. D’où l’intervention d’un médiateur,
20 Now there can be an intermediary only between two parties, yet God is one.	20 entre eux; si c’était Dieu, lui est un seul.
21 Is the Law contrary, then, to God's promises? Out of the question! If the Law that was given had beencapable of giving life, then certainly saving justice would have come from the Law.	21 Alors, est-ce que la Loi va contre les promesses? Pas du tout. Si on avait donné une loi capable de nous rendre la vie, cette loi nous donnerait la droiture du cœur.
22 As it is, scripture makes no exception when it says that sin is master everywhere; so the promise canbe given only by faith in Jesus Christ to those who have this faith.	22 Mais non, l’Écriture a tout fait rentrer dans la logique du péché, et c’est par la foi selon Jésus Christ, que les croyants reçoivent la promesse.
23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the Law, locked up to wait for the faith whichwould eventual y be revealed to us.	23 Jusqu’à la venue de la foi, la Loi nous tenait sous clé, attendant le moment où la foi ferait son apparition.
24 So the Law was serving as a slave to look after us, to lead us to Christ, so that we could be justified byfaith.	24 La Loi nous conduisait à l’école, celle du Christ, pour que, par la foi, nous devenions droits au regard de Dieu.
25 But now that faith has come we are no longer under a slave looking after us;	25 Mais quand la foi est là, nous n’avons plus à suivre celle qui nous mène à l’école.
26 for al of you are the children of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus,	26 Vous êtes fils de Dieu par la foi en Jésus Christ,
27 since every one of you that has been baptised has been clothed in Christ.	27 et vous avez revêtu le Christ, vous tous qui avez été donnés au Christ par le baptême.
28 There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither slave nor freeman, there can be neithermale nor female -- for you are all one in Christ Jesus.	28 Là, il n’y a plus de distinctions: Juif et Grec, esclave et homme libre, homme et femme; tous vous êtes devenus un dans le Christ Jésus.
29 And simply by being Christ's, you are that progeny of Abraham, the heirs named in the promise.	29 Et si vous êtes au Christ, vous êtes la descendance d’Abraham, les héritiers de la promesse.
