Acts of the Apostles 7

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The high priest asked, 'Is this true?'	1 El Sumo Sacerdote preguntó a Esteban: «¿Es verdad lo que estos dicen?».
2 He replied, 'My brothers, my fathers, listen to what I have to say. The God of glory appeared to ourancestor Abraham, while he was in Mesopotamia before settling in Haran,	2 El respondió: «Hermanos y padres, escuchen: El Dios de la gloria se apareció a nuestro padre Abraham, cuando aún estaba en la Mesopotamia, antes de establecerse en Jarán,
3 and said to him, "Leave your country, your kindred and your father's house for this country which I shalshow you."	3 y le dijo: «Abandona tu tierra natal y la casa de tu padre y ve al país que yo te indicaré».
4 So he left Chaldaea and settled in Haran; and after his father died God made him leave that place andcome to this land where you are living today.	4 Abraham salió de Caldea para establecerse en Jarán. Después de la muerte de su padre, Dios le ordenó que se trasladara a este país, donde ustedes ahora están viviendo.
5 God did not give him any property in this land or even a foothold, yet he promised to give it to him andafter him to his descendants, childless though he was.	5 El no le dio nada en propiedad, ni siquiera un palmo de tierra, pero prometió darle en posesión este país, a él, y después de él a sus descendientes, aunque todavía no tenía hijos.
6 The actual words God used when he spoke to him are that his descendants would be exiles in a landnot their own, where they would be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.	6 Y Dios le anunció que sus descendientes emigrarían a una tierra extranjera, y serían esclavizados y maltratados durante cuatrocientos años.
7 "But I wil bring judgement on the nation that enslaves them," God said, "and after this they wil leave, and worship me in this place."	7 Pero yo juzgaré al pueblo que los esclavizará –dice el Señor– y después quedarán en libertad y me tributarán culto en este mismo lugar.
8 Then he made the covenant of circumcision with him: and so when his son Isaac was born Abrahamcircumcised him on the eighth day; similarly Isaac circumcised Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.	8 Le dio luego la alianza sellada con la circuncisión y así Abraham, cuando nació su hijo Isaac, lo circuncidó al octavo día; Isaac hizo lo mismo con Jacob, y Jacob con los doce patriarcas.
9 'The patriarchs were jealous of Joseph and sold him into slavery in Egypt. But God was with him,	9 Los patriarcas, movidos por la envidia, vendieron a su hermano José para que fuera llevado a Egipto. Pero Dios estaba con él
10 and rescued him from al his miseries by making him so wise that he won the favour of Pharaoh king ofEgypt, who made him governor of Egypt and put him in charge of his household.	10 y lo salvó en todas sus tribulaciones, le dio sabiduría, y lo hizo grato al Faraón, rey de Egipto, el cual lo nombró gobernador de su país y lo puso al frente de su casa real.
11 Then a famine set in that caused much suffering throughout Egypt and Canaan, and our ancestorscould find nothing to eat.	11 Luego sobrevino una época de hambre y de extrema miseria en toda la tierra de Egipto y de Canaán, y nuestros padres no tenían qué comer.
12 When Jacob heard that there were supplies in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there on a first visit;	12 Jacob, al enterarse de que en Egipto había trigo, decidió enviar allí a nuestros padres. Esta fue la primera visita.
13 and on the second Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Pharaoh came to know his origin.	13 Cuando llegaron por segunda vez, José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos, y el mismo Faraón se enteró de origen de José.
14 Joseph then sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, a total of seventy-five people.	14 Este mandó llamar a su padre Jacob y a toda su familia, unas setenta y cinco personas.
15 Jacob went down into Egypt and after he and our ancestors had died there,	15 Jacob se radicó entonces en Egipto, y allí murió, lo mismo que nuestros padres.
16 their bodies were brought back to Shechem and buried in the tomb that Abraham had bought formoney from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.	16 Sus restos fueron trasladados a Siquem y sepultados en la tumba que Abraham Había comprado por una suma de dinero a los hijos de Emor, que habitaban en Siquem.
17 'As the time drew near for God to fulfil the promise he had solemnly made to Abraham, our nation inEgypt became very powerful and numerous,	17 Al acercarse el tiempo en que debía cumplirse la promesa que Dios había hecho a Abraham, el pueblo creció y se multiplicó en Egipto,
18 there came to power in Egypt a new king who had never heard of Joseph.	18 hasta que vino un nuevo rey que no sabía nada acerca de José.
19 He took precautions and wore down our race, forcing our ancestors to expose their babies rather thanletting them live.	19 Este rey, empleando la astucia contra nuestro pueblo, maltrató a nuestros padres y los obligó a que abandonaran a sus hijos recién nacidos para que no sobrevivieran.
20 It was at this time that Moses was born, a fine child before God. He was looked after for three monthsin his father's house,	20 En ese tiempo nació Moisés, que era muy hermoso delante de Dios. Durante tres meses fue criado en la casa de su padre,
21 and after he had been exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up like a son.	21 y al ser abandonado, la hija del Faraón lo recogió y lo crió como a su propio hijo.
22 So Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians and became a man with power both in hisspeech and in his actions.	22 Así Moisés fue iniciado en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios y llegó a ser poderoso en palabras y obras.
23 'At the age of forty he decided to visit his kinsmen, the Israelites.	23 Al cumplir cuarenta años, sintió un vivo deseo de visitar a sus hermanos, los israelitas.
24 When he saw one of them being il -treated he went to his defence and rescued the man by kil ing theEgyptian.	24 Y como vio que maltrataban a uno de ellos salió en su defensa, y vengó al oprimido matando al egipcio.
25 He thought his brothers would realise that through him God would liberate them, but they did not.	25 Moisés pensaba que sus hermanos iban a comprender que Dios, por su intermedio, les daría la salvación. Pero ellos no lo entendieron así.
26 The next day, when he came across some of them fighting, he tried to reconcile them, and said,"Friends, you are brothers; why are you hurting each other?"	26 Al día siguiente sorprendió a dos israelitas que se estaban peleando y trató de reconciliarlos, diciéndoles: «Ustedes son hermanos, ¿por qué se hacen daño?».
27 But the man who was attacking his kinsman pushed him aside, saying, "And who appointed you to beprince over us and judge?	27 Pero el que maltrataba a su compañero rechazó a Moisés y le dijo: «¿Quién te ha nombrado jefe o árbitro nuestro?
28 Do you intend to kill me as you kil ed the Egyptian yesterday?"	28 ¿Acaso piensas matarme como mataste ayer al egipcio?».
29 Moses fled when he heard this and he went to dwel in the land of Midian, where he fathered two sons.	29 Al oír esto, Moisés huyó y fue a vivir al país de Madián, donde tuvo dos hijos.
30 'When forty years were fulfil ed, in the desert near Mount Sinai, an angel appeared to him in a flameblazing from a bush that was on fire.	30 Al cabo de cuarenta años se le apareció un ángel en el desierto del monto Sinaí, en la llama de una zarza ardiente.
31 Moses was amazed by what he saw. As he went nearer to look at it, the voice of the Lord was heard,	31 Moisés quedó maravillado ante tal aparición y, al acercarse para ver mejor, oyó la voy del Señor que le decía:
32 "I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." Moses trembled and wasafraid to look.	32 «Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob». Moisés atemorizado, no se atrevió a mirar.
33 The Lord said to him, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.	33 Entonces el Señor le dijo: «Quítate las sandalias porque estás pisando un lugar sagrado.
34 I have seen the misery of my people in Egypt, I have heard them crying for help, and I have comedown to rescue them. So come here; I am sending you into Egypt."	34 Yo he visto la opresión de mi Pueblo que está en Egipto, he oído sus gritos de dolor, y por eso he venido a librarlos. Ahora prepárate, porque he decidido enviarte a Egipto».
35 'It was the same Moses that they had disowned when they said, "Who appointed you to be our leader and judge?" whom God sent to be both leader and redeemer through the angel who had appeared to him in thebush.	35 Y a este Moisés, a quien ellos rechazaron diciendo: ¿Quién te ha nombrado jefe o árbitro nuestro?, Dios lo envió como jefe y libertador con la ayuda del ángel que se apareció en la zarza.
36 It was this man who led them out, after performing miracles and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea andin the desert for forty years.	36 El los liberó, obrando milagros y signos en Egipto, en el Mar Rojo y en el desierto, durante cuarenta años.
37 It was this Moses who told the sons of Israel, "From among your own brothers God wil raise up aprophet like me."	37 Y este mismo Moisés dijo a los israelitas: Dios suscitará de entre ustedes un profeta semejante a mí.
38 When they held the assembly in the desert it was he who was with our ancestors and the angel whohad spoken to him on Mount Sinai; it was he who was entrusted with words of life to hand on to us.	38 Y cuando el pueblo estaba congregado en el desierto, él hizo de intermediario en el monte Sinaí, entre el ángel que le habló y nuestros padres, y recibió las palabras de vida que luego nos comunicó.
39 This is the man that our ancestors refused to listen to; they pushed him aside, went back to Egypt intheir thoughts,	39 Pero nuestros padres no sólo se negaron a obedecerle, sino que lo rechazaron y, sintiendo una gran nostalgia por Egipto,
40 and said to Aaron, "Make us a god to go at our head; for that Moses, the man who brought us herefrom Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."	40 dijeron a Aarón: «Fabrícanos dioses que vayan al frente de nosotros, porque no sabemos qué le ha pasado a ese Moisés, ese hombre que nos hizo salir de Egipto».
41 It was then that they made the statue of a calf and offered sacrifice to the idol. They were perfectlyhappy with something they had made for themselves.	41 Entonces, fabricaron un ternero de oro, ofrecieron un sacrificio al ídolo y festejaron la obra de sus manos.
42 God turned away from them and abandoned them to the worship of the army of heaven, as scripturesays in the book of the prophets: Did you bring me sacrifices and oblations those forty years in the desert, Houseof Israel?	42 Pero Dios se apartó de ellos y los entregó al culto de los astros, como está escrito en el libro de los Profetas: "Israelitas, ¿acaso ustedes me ofrecieron víctimas y sacrificios durante los cuarenta años que estuvieron en el desierto?
43 No, you carried the tent of Moloch on your shoulders and the star of the god Rephan, the idols youmade for yourselves to adore, and so now I am about to drive you into captivity beyond Babylon.	43 Por el contrario, llevaron consigo la carpa de Moloc y la estrella del Dios Refán, esos ídolos que ustedes fabricaron para adorarlos. Por eso yo los deportaré más allá de Babilonia".
44 'While they were in the desert our ancestors possessed the Tent of Testimony that had beenconstructed according to the instructions God gave Moses, tel ing him to work to the design he had been shown.	44 En el desierto, nuestros padres tenían la Morada del Testimonio. Así lo había dispuesto Dios, cuando ordenó a Moisés que la hiciera conforme al modelo que había visto.
45 It was handed down from one ancestor of ours to another until Joshua brought it into the country thathad belonged to the nations which were driven out by God before us. Here it stayed until the time of David.	45 Nuestros padres recibieron como herencia esta Morada y, bajo la guía de Josué, la introdujeron en el país conquistado a los pueblos que Dios iba expulsando a su paso. Así fue hasta el tiempo de David.
46 He won God's favour and asked permission to find a dwel ing for the House of Jacob,	46 David, que gozó del favor de Dios, le pidió la gracia de construir una Morada para el Dios de Jacob.
47 though it was Solomon who actual y built a house for God.	47 Pero fue Salomón el que le edificó una casa,
48 Even so the Most High does not live in a house that human hands have built: for as the prophet says:	48 si bien es cierto que el Altísimo no habita en casas hechas por la mano del hombre. Así lo dice el Profeta:
49 With heaven my throne and earth my footstool, what house could you build me, says the Lord, whatplace for me to rest,	49 "El cielo es mi trono, y la tierra la tarima de mis pies. ¿Qué casa me edificarán ustedes, dice el Señor, o donde podrá estar mi lugar de reposo?
50 when al these things were made by me?	50 ¿No fueron acaso mis manos las que hicieron todas las cosas?"
51 'You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears. You are always resisting the Holy Spirit,just as your ancestors used to do.	51 ¡Hombres rebeldes, paganos de corazón y cerrados a la verdad! Ustedes siempre resisten al Espíritu Santo y son iguales a sus padres.
52 Can you name a single prophet your ancestors never persecuted? They kil ed those who foretold thecoming of the Upright One, and now you have become his betrayers, his murderers.	52 ¿Hubo algún profeta a quien ellos no persiguieran? Mataron a los que anunciaban la venida del Justo, el mismo que acaba de ser traicionado y asesinado por ustedes,
53 In spite of being given the Law through angels, you have not kept it.'	53 los que recibieron la Ley por intermedio de los ángeles y no la cumplieron».
54 They were infuriated when they heard this, and ground their teeth at him.	54 Al oír esto, se enfurecieron y rechinaban los dientes contra él.
55 But Stephen, fil ed with the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesusstanding at God's right hand.	55 Esteban, lleno del Espíritu Santo y con los ojos fijos en el cielo, vio la gloria de Dios, y a Jesús, que estaba de pie a la derecha de Dios.
56 'Look! I can see heaven thrown open,' he said, 'and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.'	56 Entonces exclamó: «Veo el cielo abierto y al Hijo del hombre de pie a la derecha de Dios».
57 Al the members of the council shouted out and stopped their ears with their hands; then they made aconcerted rush at him,	57 Ellos comenzaron a vociferar y, tapándose los oídos, se precipitaron sobre él como un solo hombre,
58 thrust him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses put down their clothes at the feet of a youngman cal ed Saul.	58 y arrastrándolo fuera de la ciudad, lo apedrearon. Los testigos se quitaron los mantos, confiándolos a un joven llamado Saulo.
59 As they were stoning him, Stephen said in invocation, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.'	59 Mientras lo apedreaban, Esteban oraba, diciendo: «Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu».
60 Then he knelt down and said aloud, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' And with these words hefel asleep.	60 Después, poniéndose de rodillas, exclamó en alta voz: «Señor, no les tengas en cuenta este pecado». Y al decir esto, expiró.
