1 When it had been decided that we should sail to Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handedover to a centurion cal ed Julius, of the Augustan cohort.	1 Depois que foi decidido que seguíssemos por mar para a Itália, confiaram Paulo e outros presos a um centurião da coorte Augusta, chamado Júlio,
2 We boarded a vessel from Adramyttium bound for ports on the Asiatic coast and put to sea; we hadAristarchus with us, a Macedonian of Thessalonica.	2 Embarcámos num navio de Adramíteo, que devia fazer cabotagem ao longo dos litorais da Ásia, e levantámos ferro em companhia de Aristarco, macedónio de Tessalonica.
3 Next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius was considerate enough to al ow Paul to go to his friends to belooked after.	3 No dia seguinte chegámos a Sidónia. Júlio, tratando benèvolamente Paulo, permitiu-lhe ir ter com os amigos e receber os seus cuidados.
4 From there we put to sea again, but as the winds were against us we sailed under the lee of Cyprus,	4 Feitos dali à vela costeamos (a ilha de) Chipre, por nos serem contrários os ventos.
5 then across the open sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia, taking a fortnight to reach Myra in Lycia.	5 Depois, tendo atravessado o mar da Cilícia e da Panfília, chegámos a Mira da Lícia.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship leaving for Italy and put us aboard.	6 Aí, tendo o centurião encontrado um navio de Alexandria, que navegava para Itália, fez-nos embarcar nele.
7 For some days we made little headway, and we had difficulty in making Cnidus. The wind would notal ow us to touch there, so we sailed under the lee of Crete off Cape Salmone	7 Durante muitos dias, navegando lentamente e tendo com dificuldade chegado à vista de Gnido, porque o vento nos impedia, fomos costeando a ilha de Creta, junto a Salmone,
8 and struggled along the coast until we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.	8 e, navegando com dificuldade ao longo da costa, chegámos a um lugar, a que chamam Bons-Portos, perto do qual estava a cidade de Lasaia.
9 A great deal of time had been lost, and navigation was already hazardous, since it was now wel afterthe time of the Fast, so Paul gave them this warning,	9 Decorrido muito tempo, não sendo segura a navegação, por ter já passado a época do jejum, Paulo advertia-os,
10 'Friends, I can see this voyage will be dangerous and that we wil run considerable risk of losing notonly the cargo and the ship but also our lives as well.'	10 dizendo-lhes: "Amigos, vejo que a navegação começa a ser perigosa e com muito dano, não sòmente da carga e do navio, mas também das nossas vidas."
11 But the centurion took more notice of the captain and the ship's owner than of what Paul was saying;	11 Porém o centurião dava mais crédito ao piloto e ao comandante, do que ao que Paulo dizia.
12 and since the harbour was unsuitable for wintering, the majority were for putting out from there in thehope of wintering at Phoenix -- a harbour in Crete, facing south-west and north-west.	12 E, como o porto não era bom para invernar, a maior parte foi de parecer que se passasse adiante, a ver se dalguma sorte podiam atingir Fenice, porto de Creta, abrigado dos ventos de sudoeste e noroeste, e invernar ali.
13 A southerly breeze sprang up and, thinking their objective as good as reached, they weighed anchorand began to sail past Crete, close inshore.	13 Começando a ventar brandamente do sul, julgando-se certos de executar o seu desejo, depois de levantarem âncora iam costeando mais de perto Creta.
14 But it was not long before a hurricane, the 'north-easter' as they cal it, burst on them from across theisland.	14 Mas, pouco depois, desencadeou-se sobre esta ilha um vento tempestuoso, que se chama euraquilão.
15 The ship was caught and could not keep head to wind, so we had to give way to the wind and letourselves be driven.	15 Sendo a nau arrebatada, não podendo resistir ao vento, andávamos sem rumo.
16 We ran under the lee of a smal island called Cauda and managed with some difficulty to bring theship's boat under control.	16 Arrojados pela corrente a uma pequena ilha, chamada Cauda, com dificuldade pudemos recolher o escaler.
17 Having hauled it up they used it to undergird the ship; then, afraid of running aground on the Syrtisbanks, they floated out the sea-anchor and so let themselves drift.	17 Tendo-o içado, (os marinheiros) valiam-se de todos os meios de salvação, cingindo a nau com cabos de reforço. Em seguida, havendo receio de ir contra a Sirte, soltou-se a âncora flutuante, indo-se assim ao sabor das ondas.
18 As we were thoroughly storm-bound, the next day they began to jettison the cargo,	18 Sendo nós violentamente balidos pela tempestade, os marinheiros no dia seguinte alijaram carga.
19 and the third day they threw the ship's gear overboard with their own hands.	19 Ao terceiro dia lançaram ao mar com as suas próprias mãos os aparelhos do navio.
20 For a number of days both the sun and the stars were invisible and the storm raged unabated until atlast we gave up al hope of surviving.	20 Não aparecendo durante muitos dias sol nem estrelas e continuando a tempestade com violência, tínhamos já perdida Ioda a esperança de salvação.
21 Then, when they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among the men. 'Friends,' hesaid, 'you should have listened to me and not put out from Crete. You would have spared yourselves al thisdamage and loss.	21 Estando todos há muito tempo sem comer, Paulo, em pé no meio deles, disse: "Convinha, meus amigos seguindo o meu conselho, não ter saído de Creta e evitar este perigo e dano.
22 But now I ask you not to give way to despair. There wil be no loss of life at al , only of the ship.	22 Mas agora exorto-vos a que tenhais coragem, porque nenhum de vós perderá a vida, mas sòmente o navio será destruído.
23 Last night there appeared beside me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,	23 Porque esta noite apareceu-me o anjo daquele Deus de quem eu sou, e a quem sirvo,
24 and he said, "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to appear before Caesar, and God grants youthe safety of al who are sailing with you."	24 dizendo: Não temas, Paulo, é preciso que compareças diante de César; e eis que Deus te concedeu a vida de todos os que navegam contigo.
25 So take courage, friends; I trust in God that things will turn out just as I was told;	25 Por isso, meus amigos, coragem, porque tenho fé em Deus de que assim acontecerá, como me foi dito.
26 but we are to be stranded on some island.'	26 Nós havemos de ir dar a uma ilha."
27 On the fourteenth night we were being driven one way and another in the Adriatic, when aboutmidnight the crew sensed that land of some sort was near.	27 Quando chegou à décima quarta noite, navegando pelo mar Adriático, cerca da meia-noite, os marinheiros julgaram estar perto de alguma terra.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; after a short interval they sounded again and foundfifteen fathoms.	28 Lançando a sonda, encontraram vinte braças (de profundidade); um pouco mais adiante, encontraram quinze braças.
29 Then, afraid that we might run aground somewhere on a reef, they dropped four anchors from thestern and prayed for daylight.	29 Temendo que déssemos em alguns recifes, lançaram quatro âncoras da popa, suspirando pela chegada do dia.
30 When the crew tried to escape from the ship and lowered the ship's boat into the sea as though theymeant to lay out anchors from the bows, Paul said to the centurion and his men,	30 Porém, procurando os marinheiros fugir do navio, depois de lançarem o escaler ao mar, com o pretexto de começarem a largar as âncoras da proa,
31 'Unless those men stay on board you cannot hope to be saved.'	31 Paulo disse ao centurião e aos soldados. "Se estes homens não permanecerem no navio, não podereis salvar-vos."
32 So the soldiers cut the boat's ropes and let it drop away.	32 Então os soldados cortaram o cabo do escaler e deixaram-no cair.
33 Just before daybreak Paul urged them al to have something to eat. 'For fourteen days', he said, 'youhave been in suspense, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 Começando a fazer-se dia, Paulo rogava a todos que comessem alguma coisa, dizendo: "Faz hoje já catorze dias que estais à espera, em jejum, sem comer nada.
34 I urge you to have something to eat; your safety depends on it. Not a hair of any of your heads wil belost.'	34 Portanto rogo-vos que tomeis algum alimento, a fim de vos salvardes, porque não perecerá nem um só cabelo da cabeça de nenhum de vós."
35 With these words he took some bread, gave thanks to God in view of them al , broke it and began toeat.	35 Dito isto, tomando o pão, deu graças a Deus em presença de todos; depois, tendo-o partido, começou a comer.
36 They al plucked up courage and took something to eat themselves.	36 Todos tomaram ânimo e se puseram também a comer.
37 In al we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on board that ship.	37 Éramos ao todo, no navio, duzentas e setenta e seis pessoas.
38 When they had eaten what they wanted they lightened the ship by throwing the corn overboard intothe sea.	38 Saciados de alimento, aliviaram o navio, lançando o trigo ao mar.
39 When day came they did not recognise the land, but they could make out a bay with a beach; theyplanned to run the ship aground on this if they could.	39 Tendo-se feito dia, não reconheceram a terra (Malta), mas viram uma baía, que tinha uma praia, na qual intentavam, se pudessem, encalhar o navio.
40 They slipped the anchors and let them fal into the sea, and at the same time loosened the lashings ofthe rudders; then, hoisting the foresail to the wind, they headed for the beach.	40 Tendo, pois, soltado as âncoras, deixaram-nas cair ao mar, afrouxando, ao mesmo tempo, as cordas dos lemes; levantada ao vento a vela do artimão, encaminhavam-se para a praia.
41 But the cross-currents carried them into a shoal and the vessel ran aground. The bows were wedgedin and stuck fast, while the stern began to break up with the pounding of the waves.	41 Mas, tendo nós dado numa língua de terra, com mar de ambos os lados, encalharam ; a proa enterrada permanecia imóvel, ao mesmo tempo que a popa se abria com a violência das ondas.
42 The soldiers planned to kil the prisoners for fear that any should swim off and escape.	42 Á resolução dos soldados foi matar os presos a fim de que nenhum fugisse, salvando-se a nado.
43 But the centurion was determined to bring Paul safely through and would not let them carry out theirplan. He gave orders that those who could swim should jump overboard first and so get ashore,	43 Mas o centurião, querendo salvar Paulo, impediu-os de fazer isto. Mandou que aqueles que soubessem nadar, fossem os primeiros a lançar-se à água e alcançassem a terra;
44 and the rest fol ow either on planks or on pieces of wreckage. In this way it happened that al camesafe and sound to land.	44 quanto aos outros, alcançá-la-iam, uns sobre tábuas, e outros sobre destroços do navio. E assim aconteceu que todos chegaram salvos a terra.
